I am fortunate to have attended a recital by Leontyne Price in Richmond, VA in the early 1980s. With no microphone, her voice powerfully filled the entire auditorium with clear, luscious, and beautiful sound while conveying every nuance of emotion in the songs. She performed six encores and received seven well deserved standing ovations! Brava Diva Price!
My favorite singer of. All. Time. She was the second Black woman to sing at the Metropolitan Opera (the first was her colleague Marian Anderson, also an incredible talent), and not only did her career open doors in the field for other Black women, she is one of the greatest sopranos of all time. If I ever met her in person, I think I'd just... pass out. Or possibly fall to my knee and cry 😂 she's the reason I became a singer.
@@shannoncrane4131 That’s right. They were fine singers, one might say even very fine singers. You can probably find them singing sonething on TH-cam. Leontyne was the only one of the group who was truly the “best in the world” at what she sang, in her prime. Indeed, I would argue, one of the best of all time. That’s why you’ve heard of her and not of them.
Leontyne Price is a Queen of the opera Prima Donnas. The aria "Pace, Pace, mio dio" is from the opera La Forza Del Destino (The Force of destiny) by Giussepe Verdi. Ms. Price was a foremost Verdian interpreter throughout the world for 3 decades. The aria is sung at the end of the opera as her character (Leonora) lives in exile after blaming herself for the death of her father, who is accidentally killed by a forbidden lover. Leonora sings the aria right before her brother finds her and avenges their father's death by killing her. Sad story, but as you can hear, the audience eats it up, as the high note at the end is held quite long, and then she does her signature trajectory then whip snap of the note at the end. P.S. Funny that you mention Pavarotti, she didn't sing with him often, but there are a few performances of them together late in their careers (e.g. Aida, and the duet from the opera, Un Ballo in Maschera, "Teco io sto". I was happy to witness your reaction, as I experienced her the same way 40 years ago. Seeing her live was beyond words. 😉
You should have heard her in the theatre. I did several times. She had the most beautiful voice I heard in the opera house and in concert. Miss Price just had her 96th birthday.
It is unlikely that you will find a more generous artist than Price. In her famous recital at Carnegie Hall, her encores were as lengthy as her program. She is worthy of her deserved adulation!
The reason why people find opera (along with classical music) so powerful is due to how your brain processes it. When someone is singing in your language, you listen to what they are saying and emote with their emotional experience. B/c opera is typically in a foreign language, your brain will pick up on the emotion in the singer's voice and merge it with one of your emotional memories. It basically amplifies how you feel and an emotional experience causing your feelings to consume you.
If you love this performance then you will be floored by her last performance of the opera Aida at the Met in New York in 1985. You will think an angel is singing.
Leontyne Price is absolutely one of the greatest of all time; we're so lucky to have so many recordings of her. She was just unbelievable. If you loved this, I really recommend this th-cam.com/video/2ndUT-wXNS8/w-d-xo.html It's her and Di Stefano doing the first act Love Duet from Tosca, and they both absolutely nail it, especially Leontyne.
I first found her 10 years ago. She was a performer for Christmas music on a album my dad had, distributed by Goodyear in the 60's. I determined then that she had a great voice. I since collected about 15 years of those records. Full of fabulous artist. She is one of my favorite opera female singers. Another opera performer back then, try Mario Lanza
Thank you so much for this video of the great Leontine Price! BTW, do you have the words to this aria? If not, see if you can find them and read during this piece -- that will give you even more depth of understanding and emotion.
Dare you to listen to Price's PUccini aria “Chi il bel sogno di Doretta” by Leontyne Price from this same concert chills from the Queen
She has one of the most powerful voices of all time

You should react to “Chi il bel sogno di Doretta” by Leontyne Price from this same concert and also her version of “Vissi D’Arte”

(point of clarification: I'm not Black, just a soprano and a huge Leontyne Price fan)
No! Two other black women arrived at the Met before Leontyne, and after Anderson. They were Mattiwilda Dobbs in 1956, and Gloria Davy in 1958.
@@liedersanger1 wait, really? I've never even heard of them - did they just not have as publicized careers?

elle est une immense chanteuse, une voix colossale , reconnue comme la plus grande aida aussi de verdi.

Please keep reacting to opera 🙌🏻
Hermoso
A recommendation would be her version of Vissi D'Atre from the Opera Tosca. It is a desert island piece of music for me, absolutely wonderful.
You really wanna hear leontyne price sing, listen to her sing Damor sull ali rose
Uuuufffff!, beautiful Aria!! And Madame price is the best!
Perfect!!!
That is what opera does more people need to listen to the music

The grand Diva miss Price.❤❤❤

great singer. doesn't get enough attention. opera was invented by the Italians. they know how to get emotional and play on the emotions.
So do black singers! A good marriage.
React to The R&B group Lakeside's song Wish. It was played a lot on the radio in the early 80's!
Chi bel sogno check that one out of her singing it
She is a cousin to Whitney Houston!
Well. I think first cousin to Whitney mother which would make her second cousin. But you get the point
you need to react to jessye norman
Can you react to Leontyne Price “O Patria Mia”? That is even better than this
Since you liked Pavarotti and Leontyne Price in their respective arias, try one with them together: th-cam.com/video/S6Hdh0lSYrU/w-d-xo.html
Are you bleaching your skin?
Why must you keep interrupting this great artist with your inane comments. Wait until the piece is over!
Ok do you realize your listening to a first cousin of Whitney Houston and Dionne Warwick
Whitney Houston's cousin...
Dionne, Whitney, Leontyne, Cissy, and I believe a few other singers in the family. It's amazing
@@googleuser7454 That family did get more than its fair share of talent...
HISTESS TALKS TO MUCH
