Hornby Sentinel motor upgrade

I wondered if the slow speed performance of my 0-4-0 rod drive Hornby Sentinel could be improved by replacing the stock 3 pole motor with a 5 pole coreless example.
The replacement motor, despite being of much higher quality, is more free revving and spins quicker. This should mean that under digital control with a suitable quality decoder performance would be transformed. The new motor is incredibly smooth and quiet, and there is space for a larger flywheel. However, under DC control, although improved, I would suggest that the modification is not worthwhile. The gearing of the Hornby drive is quite low, and lacks the finesse of their more expensive offerings - resulting in a very short transition from a crawl to sprinting pace!
