    Your explanations made the definition of each stitch pattern very clear for me. Thank you.

    OK. I am a numpty because I have to watch this again and write everything down to remember. Whew. Great teacher. It is just me.

      There's a lot of info here. Every time I need to do the kitchener stitch I have to go to the Knitty page with pictures LOL.

    What a revelation! I'm a new self-taught knitter and when I'd pick my stockinette scarf up the next day to work, I'd have trouble figuring out whether to knit or purl the next row. I used the dangling tail of my long tail cast on as a marker and/or would write a note to myself on a Post-it, but YOU made it so clear for me. When the right side is facing you, you knit - if it's the wrong side, you purl. It's as simple as that. Provided, of course, that the right side is the knit side, lol. I need to watch all your videos from start to finish - you're the best teacher. Thank you!

      I'm so glad I was able to create a light-bulb moment for you. And you are right about being careful in assuming the right side is the knit side ... it totally depends on the pattern. But in stockinette it is definitely the right side.
      Since you mentioned you are new and that you are working on stockinette, might I suggest this video to be soon in your viewing plans: Why Stockinette Curls and How to Stop It: th-cam.com/video/odSgpWoMY7U/w-d-xo.html

    I can't even imagine 'preferring" purling to knitting. Who are these people? 😂 I really would have benefited from this informative video when I first learned to knit a couple years ago. It really helps to know the reason why and how things work the way they do. Great explanation.

    Thank your for the stitch anatomy, Barbara.
    I’ve been knitting since I was a kid and always called the side facing me with the “upside down v’s” the purl stitches and the bumpy side facing me are the knit stitches. Oh dear! I’m lost.
    Knit every row is garter - I got that. ✅
    Knit a row, purl the next row is stockinette - I got that. ✅

    Thank you for making such a clear description! I also really appreciate the contrast color when showing how to duplicate stich. I have never seen duplicate stitching up close that I remember.
    And I'd never really thought about the flat vs. in the round stitching difference.
    I so appreciate your willingness to use verbal, written, and showing the stitches to describe the process!💗

    I don’t think I quite understand yet why knitting stockinette in the round and knitting it flat function differently, but it was helpful to see the anatomy of stitches.

    • @byteangelxi9178
      @byteangelxi9178 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      When you're working in the round you keep going without turning your work so stockinette is always all knit. When you're working on straight needles you have to turn your work around and work on the back side so 1 row is knit and next is purl

  • @constanzehancock8667

    Thank you so much for explaining knit vs purl. What I do not understand why would one knit reverse stockinet in the flat.

    • @WatchBarbaraKnit
      @WatchBarbaraKnit  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You frequently see fairly significant chunks of reverse stockinette between cables knitted both flat and in the round.

    Joined I'm a learner I've just learnt purl stiche and now confused as I've got purl at front and garter stiches at the back does this matter? I'm a learner I just ended up purlin the front side and garter at the back I'm so confused now wil my scarf look nice ?

    • @WatchBarbaraKnit
      @WatchBarbaraKnit  ปีที่แล้ว

      Garter is not a specific stitch, but a stitch pattern. You have knit and purl. I'm afraid what you are describing is confusing because the terminology is not being used correctly. I understand purling the front side but "garter the back' needs clarification.

    Barbara, you did a good job explaining this....but i have to say, you made it sound so much more complicated then when you talk about textured lace or mosaic. LOL

      Lol, I can see this. I think that’s because I typically only cover one thing and there are, like, six things here. And also, simple is hard lol!
