I had an Atlas based cafe racer…with clip ons. After about an hour it felt like I was holding on to the fat ends of two baseball bats. Mercifully, mine had an alternator and electronic ignition, plus a Commando diaphragm clutch. Best handling bike I ever rode, but you can see why Norton developed the Isolastic frame for the Commando.
I had the Dominator 99 'SS' twin carb as a youngster in the UK. Swine to start but pulled like a train. Weighed about as much, too. Lovely to see the classic Norton fuel tank and silencers- thanks-Tom
Back in the 1960's I always thought the Norton Atlas 750 was so much cooler than the Triumphs. Never could quite afford one so I bought a BSA 650 and 40 years later bought 3 Triumphs; still own a Thruxton and Speed Twin 1200. My 2020 Interceptor 750 is a nice, modern, lightweight that is substituting for the Norton that never was.
I can sympathise with old knees and hard kick starting a Norton 750. I have the same problem with the '67 Norton P 11 desert sled that I own. As far as Atlas handling goes it should handle really well with the Featherbed Frame that it has. That frame has inspired a whole lot of Triton cafe racers.
I noticed that too. Am thinking it is going to be in the Baxter Cycle auction on the 24th of August. I'm jealous. The Atlas is one of my favorite Nortons, as far as the looks go. I've never actually ridden one.
It's a real Brute in a Suit...good looking ruffian, for sure. Wahoo!
