    Hi Christy-Lyn! How are you?
    Since I was 6 years old, my dream has been to play the harp. However, being part of a family of five children with a precarious financial situation, my parents were never able to get me one. Now that I'm 18 and have a job, I'm starting to save money to buy a harp. Despite the fact that I have to pay for my studies and my medication alone in addition to providing for my needs, I do my best to save. I intend to buy myself a Fullsicle harp from Harpsicle as you advised in a video. I also created a fundraiser on GoFundMe for generous people to help me realize my dream. I discovered your TH-cam channel very recently and it really motivates me to work hard to pay my harp and start my adventure as a harpist. Your videos help me a lot and I wanted to thank you. You are adorable and you seem to be a very sweet and optimistic person. Thank you so much. ❤
    Sincerely,
    Maryanne

    This was so funny. I found this sheet music in F...I just got my harp 4 days ago and had tuned it to C because...that seemed logical? I could guess the levers would change pitch one semitone but thought...later...but later came quite soon...and I thought...okay I need a B flat people, making the B string a half step higher....well two C's isn't very useful now, is it...oh heck back to the internet...then this came up and it was like....the heavens parted and she said E flat...deeeeeeerp.....I laughed at myself because that seems so obvious but what do I know...You are the harp angel, Ms. Christy Lyn. 40 years of combined piano, classical voice and recorders here equals the do it yourself spirit and so much capacity to make a disaster out of things! I am watching all your videos so that I learn about my lovely harp and technical considerations on my way to having fun with my adorable little 22 string! Brackets! Fingering! You are much appreciated!!

    I'm glad I checked this out - mainly because I was trying to figure out how to tune my brand new Dusty with the string ends in the way, and you obviously tune from the back on that type. At least I was tuning the harpsicle properly hahaha. I wasn't planning to tune in Eb, but I found (at least on the harpsicle) that the notes went up a whole step with levers, not half, so I wasn't in tune. If I tuned it in Eb and put levers up, I was reasonably close to a C M scale. Still deciding which way to go with the Dusty - depends on the key of the majority of stuff I want to play, I guess.

    I have had a music stand with a light for 15 years, although I would like to get a battery powered light clip for it so I’m not limited by having to be near an outlet. Thanks to a video by Anne Crosby Gaudet, I purchased a new iPad Pro and the Forescore app about 6 months ago. I just need to purchase that Bluetooth page turner now! :) The new large iPad is great for watching your lessons on my music stand, too. Your lessons being done in “chunks” are very effective. Your loving encouragement is equally valuable. I may have to try the light strip, although I am a little hesitant about damaging the finish. I would have the same concern about the music stand you have attached to your pillar either denting the wood or damaging the finish. Any chance of that?

    • @LearningtheHarp
      @LearningtheHarp  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes there is a chance of the “harp desk” damaging the finish, but it has cork on it so if you’re careful it should be ok. I’m not very careful with these things so I have made a little scratch, but I also tend to knock into door frames when I carry my harp through the house, so that might put things into perspective 😆

    Hi Christy-lyn
    This tutorial is very informative but I was just wondering,.
    Would it not be easier to put the E, A and B leavers up and then just tune to C.
    I'm assuming there will be no difference but I'm open to being corrected.
    Or is there a reason that all levers should be down when tuning?
    Love your videos.

    • @LearningtheHarp
      @LearningtheHarp  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Damian, that’s a great question! That would be “easier”, but it’s not the best for tuning. When we tune a string with the lever up, some of the tension gets caught between the lever and the tuning pin, which makes the tuning less accurate and can also damage the string by making it scrape against the lever, which may make it break sooner than it would otherwise. Rather spend the effort getting used to tuning with the levers all down, it’ll be better for your harp! 😊

      I thank you for replying and appreciate your advice.
      I had noticed that tuning as I had suggested did mean me tuning more often.
      I'll try tuning as you suggest and hope that gives a better result.
      I really enjoy your lessons and as a beginner your help and tutorials are greatly appreciated. 👍👍👍
      Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing your expertise.

    Im really enjoying your classes:)My sharpsicle is tuned to C major . when I progress to a fully leveled harp, can I still stay in C and just use the levers to get those flats and sharps I cant get now, like G and B or will I need tune to eb ? thank you :)

    • @LearningtheHarp
      @LearningtheHarp  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Pattie! Good question 😊 If you want to be able to play pieces that have flats in them, you will need to tune your harp with those flats, and then put the levers up to play the natural notes. On harp an A sharp and B flat are different because they are on different strings - if you engage your A levers to make an A sharp and expect to use it as a B flat, then you can’t play A naturals in that piece without changing the lever back. Make sense? So if you have all the levers and you want to play pieces with flats, then I recommend tuning in the key of E flat 😊👍🏻

    Great explanation! You are the best. But i have a doubt. Can i play the little fountain with a celtic harp with levels (I dont have pedals of the classic harps). How i must tune to play the little fountain? I have seen you playing and I think it was a Celtic harp without pedals but I'm not sure. Thank you very much for your job!

    • @LearningtheHarp
      @LearningtheHarp  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes you can! It’s in the key of F, so you need B flats. That means your B strings have to be tuned to B flat (or A sharp), and you put the B levers down for when you’re playing this piece. Once you have your harp in the key of F, the rest of the piece does not have any lever changes.

    Hi Christy-lyn, I have a problem I've tuned my harp into E flat, thanks to your guide, but when I try to change my levers into F major, one of my high E(tuned to Eb when down) plays F instead of E when lever's up! Is it something I did wrong? Or should I get my harp checked? I'm really a beginner, so I'm not even sure if it's right to ask you.
    Thanks for the tutorial!

    • @LearningtheHarp
      @LearningtheHarp  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there! If the string is playing an Eb when the lever is down, but an F when the lever is up, it means that your lever needs to be adjusted. Usually we call that regulating a harp, to make sure that every lever does a perfect half-step. You can pay a harp technician to regulate your harp (I do this every second year), or you can find out how to tweak it yourself. I would speak to your harp maker first, or to a harp shop like the Virginia Harp Center - they can give you good advice for what to do, and for technicians who serve your area. Hope that helps! 😊👍🏻

    After you've turned your harp to E-Flat, do you have to tune the levers as well? If you E string is in E-flat, and you flip the lever, don't you have to test the tuning to be sure that it is now, in fact, an E?

    • @LearningtheHarp
      @LearningtheHarp  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your levers should change the string by a semitone (half step), no matter what the note is tuned to. If it’s not a proper half step then then harp needs to be regulated, but that shouldn’t be affected by which note you tune the string to.

    when youve tuned your harp to Eflat do you leave the levers up all the time then? Thanks Deb Everitt

    • @LearningtheHarp
      @LearningtheHarp  ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on what key you want to play in. For example if you want to play in the key of C then you will need your B, E, and A levers up. If you want to play in E major then all your levers will be up. If you want to play in E flat major all your levers will be down 😊 Hope that helps, Deb! 🤗💕

      Hey Deb! I usually try to put them down but if you forget I don’t think it’s a major deal. Perhaps it might make the strings last a little shorter but I don’t think it’ll damage the harp 😊

    • @LearningtheHarp
      @LearningtheHarp  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well if you’re just starting out you might find it easier to have them tuned the same so you can get used to what to do with the levers, but it can be nice to have different options and there’s nothing wrong with tuning your harps differently ☺️💕
