It's not that. For some people, they perceive what she is doing as screaming. Now before anyone thinks that's what I'm saying, I'm not that person who thinks this. I understand the music and the culture very well, but I also understand there's a culture that doesn't like anything that's not this pristine clean sound. They are more influenced by a Western European notion of singing, which for them is a much cleaner sound than the growling/squalling sound.

If I am not mistaken she sang lead on a number of great dance music tracks in the late '70s and early '80s, including lead vocals on a few of Inner Life's great tracks (they were on Prelude Records and also Salsoul Records). I am guessing here as it's been awhile but I think she sang the hell out of "Moment of My Life" and perhaps also the wonderful "Caught Up (in a One Night Love Affair". She was a much in demand studio vocalist when dance music was huge; absolutely loved her dance club tracks but she sounds versatile enough to do almost anything she wants to vocally.
