- Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Piano Sonata No. 7 in C major, K 309 (284b) (1777) is a piano sonata in three movements:

A typical performance takes about 16 minutes.
The work was composed during a journey to Mannheim and Paris in 1777-78. The sonata was complete in a few days in early November 1777. The andante movement is a "portrait" of Rose Cannabich (his pupil), the 15-year-old daughter of the Mannheim Kapellmeister Christian Cannabich. Upon reviewing a copy of the manuscript, Mozart's father Leopold wrote that it was "a strange composition. It has something in it of the 'rather artificial' Mannheim style, but so very little that your own good style is not spoilt".

Mozart comes up with a completely new theme Every Four Bars, connecting the themes exquisitely, as he improvises the music in front of his piano.
The cadence at 10:07 is absolutely beautiful. The simplicity of it... wow! How can it be so simple, yet so moving!

@@dzc46278 yes, I also thought this was supposed to be played as an appoggiatura (as it is in my edition), and that's the way I played it for my ATCL in performance. The examiner did not comment so I assumed I was correct. Although I'd say either way would not detract overall from the entire performance of this awesome piece

According to Alfred Einstein (in his 1945 book on Mozart) this Sonata was improvised by Mozart. Mozart composed two different second movements - both said to describe the same young lady! Listening to the sonata I think you can hear that it has an improvisational feel to it. Its anyone's guess what Mozart actually played compared to what he wrote down later.

Uchida's my favorite Mozart pianist. Her third movement of the 22nd piano concerto is pretty much perfect, but Buchbinder's performance, though not as accurate or graceful, is FUN so I find myself going back to his performance. I wish today's pianists added the ornamentation and improvisations Mozart intended; we'd have many different performances instead of carbon copies.

Small notes in bars 4 and 5 (and in all similar places) are not crossed out and are usually played as eighth notes. Similar notes in part 2 (Andante) are played correctly.

At 15:32, I'm hearing a half diminished chord, as in a natural E! I do prefer it this way and wish Mozart would have written it as so, but does the music not say Eb? The Eb is more familiar to the style but I love how wistful the E natural comes of as.
The score you see in the video is not an accurate one, the NMA (Neue Mozart Ausgabe), is the gold standard most scholarly edition, the one in the video contains printer's errors; as a dedicated Mozart scholar, player, and pianist of 35 years, I can assure you, what she's playing is accurate...incidentally, you will never find a better interpreter of Mozart than Mitsuko Uchida.

I have always loved the musical approach of Mozart; Just a pure musician, born to write music. He did it so well in fact, that the composers who followed had to revert to banging on the keyboard to bring a new style as to not recreate music Mozart had already done to it's highest level. If he had written the sonata in this century, he wouldn't even be old enough to drink alcohol. Incredible...

There were some discrepancies between the performance and the score regarding appogiaturas, which were played as grace notes - especially in the 1st movement. I would be interested to know which version is correct - the score or the pianist?
You have a very good ear! AFAIK the notes should have been appogiaturae - rondo alla turka and 2nd movement piano concerto 21 as examples

It’s a sonata. Sonata form consist of three sections. An exposition, a development, and a recapitulation. The exposition is where the thematic material for the price is introduced. Usually, there are two themes, and the second theme is in the key of the dominant of the first key. If the initial is in minor, the second theme is typically major. So, for example, a c major sonata usually modulates to g for the second theme, and in a a minor sonata, the second theme usually becomes e major.
The development is when the composer twists one or more of the themes from the exposition through several ways, such as transposition, inversion, ornamentation, and other ways of variation. This section is often the longest and is the “meat” of the sonata.
The recapitulation is like the exposition where the main themes are played again. However, it may be altered slightly. For example, sometimes, the themes take some of the main characteristics of the development section (like if the themes were mainly major, the development was mostly minor, than the recapitulation may feature some darker tones or shifts into a minor key.
Now, the overarching form of a three movement sonata varies. Usually, the first movement in a sonata is sonata form, but it may sometimes be a theme and variations for example. The third movement is more likely to be a rondo form. Tempi of the three movement usually goes from quick, slower, and just as quick or quicker then the first.
Do keep it mind, this is all simplified and I generalized many things and may have glossed over/missed some parts. For example, not all sonatas have 3 movements.

Newbie question: Why does the score use an appogiatura in the 3rd Movement rather than write the notes out in semiquavers?
It was the habit in Mozart's time.
+Eddie G A little more: it was the habit because the "second" sixteenth (which gets written as an eighth on the beat) is usually the note that's in the chord on that beat, so it's more important than the preceding note.
