  • The Backun Educator Series presents Michelle Anderson, founder of Clarinet Mentors (www.clarinetmentors.com), in a series of videos designed specifically to help school band teachers to teach clarinet more easily and effectively. Many clarinetists do not play on reeds that support them in producing the best sound that they can. Often, they don't realize that they have outgrown their reed strength, and their high notes sound loud and squawky, or wimp out all together. This video gives you some clear guidelines as to what strength might be best for your clarinet students. Michelle also discusses some reed types that she likes and recommends for students.

I started on a 2.5 and immediately switched to a 3. 3.5+ and 4 are my favorite strengths

I now play 5's, they just work well with the way I approach the clarinet (I don't bite, I just like the backpressure), but I'd start someone on a super closed-faced mouthpiece like the M15 or M30, and using a 3 or 3½ strength reed, then letting them go from there.

I like all your videos very informative. I think a big topic that is overlooked is reed strenght to tip openning. If a student has a open mouthpiece and is told to use a hard reed 3.0 to 3.5 it may not be too effective. Likewise using a low 1.5 or 2 on a closed tip piece. Instructors should look at tip opening. Yes a 2.5 is generally ok but if a open tip, moving a student reed strenght up may not be as beneficial as recommending a more closed tip before going up....seen some weird mouthpieces with rentals.
I use a crystal mouthpiece medium opening and a 3 to 3.5 is ideal. 2.5 works but lower than 2.5 is too much vibration and 3.5 starts pushing it on the upper end. Also have a very open jazz mouthpiece (5JB) and ideal is 1.5 to 2.0. I use this for jazz, swing and dixieland.
So, I understand higher reed strenght when playing speeds up firming muscles and endurance is helps tremendously with endurance. However, it is key to stay within reed strenght to tip distance and a more closed mouthpiece may be suggested to continue increasing reed thickness. Many instructors dont even bother to look to see tip opening and just keep increasing reed strenght.

Just to point out Reginald Kell used reeds #2.5 and so does Karl Leister as far as I've read. Some Klezmer players like Giora Feidman use I think Vandoren Traditional #1.5. Mark Nuiccio use I think # 4.25 to 4.5 reeds so between 3-4 is not a fast rule although most players might be using something in that range.
I used to use Vandoren V-12 #3.5 for many years but then I tried some mouthpieces that I really like and I just got better result with #3.5+ so that's what I use today.

Great point Stefan! The best reed strength is "what works best with the setup you have, and they style of music you are playing". However, I do see many students having challenges because they are on the incorrect reed strength (usually too soft) and are not aware of it. Hopefully this gives their teachers some guidelines on what to look for to help them out.

Can you do a video on how to learn to tongue your reed demonstrating more and a video on getting use to playing on a harder reed?
