The symbolism displayed here is more subtle than people realise. The Olympic rings represent the world's continents, and in this piece on industrialisation, Britain itself forges the rings and joins them together. It is essentially reminding everyone that Britain built the modern world through the Industrial Revolution.

During the opening ceremony many times the Olympic wheels were presented in various ways. But how it was done in London was the best. I think that these five sparkling rims eclipsed all the other opening ceremonies of these games.
London had the greatest Olympic ceremonies of all time. Everyone was so wowed at Beijing in 2008 that London was so determined to at least keep in step with that display. They did that and then some.
The other day I sat and watched the opening ceremony, the whole 4 hours just out of curiosity and because I heard muse and Eric idle were in it (whoops, that was the closing ceremony) but my God, I just couldn't take my eyes off the screen. Everything was great. So well done. By the time the ring casting scene came I had forgotten what I was watching and when the rest of the rings showed up and I figured what was happening I couldn't help but giggle like an idiot with tears in my eyes. I had been completely transported into this scene. Thank you to everyone involved in the making of this story. And congratulations to those who reenacted it so beautifully.
THis is my fav. Personally I love the London opening and especially the industrial revolution scene. The scenery is very my taste and it makes me so excited.

Britain built the modern world. We all owe them, that moment is just a very touching for everyone who understand industrial revolution. They're the first to have it and suffer from it, so we have modern world like this today.
The industrial revolution section of the opening ceremony was amazing and I thought was the best , the gradual one by one transformation of rural grass and plasters to a land of metal, steel iron and sulfur. The music was so surreal with the batting of drums filling the air all around you that builds and builds overtime till the Olympic rings are formed.
If ever I need to motivate myself, I watch this. An outstanding piece of theatre - pure emotive drama with a soundtrack to die for. Well done to all concerned.

Yes! This is what i expect from Olympic opening. Overwhelming piece of art, i hope i would've been there.
Can't beat this masterpiece
What does the hammer movement symbolize?
My absolute favorite Opening Ceremony. It gives me chills ❤
What does the hammer movement symbolize?
What does the hammer movement symbolize?
The symbolism displayed here is more subtle than people realise. The Olympic rings represent the world's continents, and in this piece on industrialisation, Britain itself forges the rings and joins them together. It is essentially reminding everyone that Britain built the modern world through the Industrial Revolution.
I thought they were the rings of Sauron? My bad, just the vibe I got....
That's arrogant.
@@keaponlaffin6737 Arrogance can often be deserved.
Lmao, study a history book.

Its hard to believe this was ten years ago now.. no matter how many times I watch this,it never fails to move me.What an incredible opening, surly the best ever, and something that will be incredibly hard to top.Such imagination and creativity, with such a powerful story! I salute everyone involved, its a remarkable piece of theatre, the greatest set change in history...this will always be my 'happy place' and I will continue to visit it for the rest of my life!
I doubt it will ever be beaten. Nobody wants to spend that kind of money anymore.
France 🤣 ffs. THIS is how you do it. The timing of the rings meeting at the end is phenomenal
Came to see this after watching Paris 2024 opening ceremony
No one wants watching Paris 2024💩🗑
me too
Proper opening ceremony ❤
Aye, proper.
Best Olympics opening EVER
I was 18 when this happened, I'm 29 now. How time has flown by.
Had to cleanse my palate after watching that Paris opening ceremony
Watching the 2024 Paris opening ceremony has brought be back here … not a patch on this
This is without doubt the best thing I will EVER see in the flesh.....even watching this back with the volume on full doesn't come close to comprehending the wall of noise that went on all the way through this piece............
You're telling me! I was inside the tor at the time!
Bet there was an incredible view from up there.....
I'm jealous of you guys
Was in the UK at the time but couldn't be there live, was watching the ceremony live from Cambridge instead
Best Opening Ceremony yet
What a night do of best memories will ever watching that so nostalgic gives me chill that year that Olympics was best ever will never forget it london 2012 so proud we pull it off 🇬🇧
one of the most creative Olympic ceremony i ever witness when i was in my university... Literal goosebumps while watching the rich history of events that shaped the modern world.
Love Underworld's song. Captured the moment magnificently
I knew when the ring started to light up in the middle i knew was watching something amazing so iconic best thing that night was really special for the country what a opening
Best olympic performance of all time.
Best opening ceremony ever. Britain is just in a class of it's own with theatre and ceremony ❤
Still pretty sure that this was the best show in human history. Cant wait to see the world united like these 5 rings...
Exist64 me too I wish we were united
💀
Its 2020 now I'm sure this was a ritual to bring the virus into manifestation
Unfortunately Fear has united the world now more than ever before. Fear making us blindly adjust to unreasonable measures. Not an ideal way of unity.
I think Sauron said the same thing....Its kind of his aesthete here.
And all for a third of the money the Chinese spent
The history of Great Britain is just phenomenal, what nation which was so small and achieved so much is just mind boggling. Rule Britannia!
Onward and upward
Increible que ya pasaron 11 años,que nostalgia, mis primeros juegos olimpicos, nunca los olvidare
And congratulations to those who reenacted it so beautifully.
to be honest your giggling gushing over this nightmare does sound quite idiotic...
@@chrisharmon2730 and you sound like a moron...
THis is my fav. Personally I love the London opening and especially the industrial revolution scene. The scenery is very my taste and it makes me so excited.
one of the rare times I’m actually proud of my country lol
Why rare??
my history lesson for today is all about in industrial revolution and i watch this to my students they love the history of London's industrialization
This was unbelievably moving, watching it unfold before me on TV back in 2012. In 2019, it still fills me with pride. Thank you to all involved. Stunning.
The Best Summer Olympics EVER!!!!
2012 London: Industrial Revolution
2024 Paris: Social Devolution
Best opening I've ever seen. genuine representation of their nation pride and history..well done UK
I'm not even British but this made me cry! thank you, your ancestors did well for your country and the whole humanity. "Sacrifices were made, but we never sacrifice in vain".
Their ancestors ruined the world
@@so-zc9nl Indeed, they started transatlantic slave trade, colonise many countries and exploiting their resources in order to industrials their economy at the expense of poor countries.
I worked with two ladies from Thailand and found them delightful. You have a wonderful country. You have every reason to be proud of your ancient and fascinating country and people:)
Goosebumps everything.
Britain built the modern world. We all owe them, that moment is just a very touching for everyone who understand industrial revolution. They're the first to have it and suffer from it, so we have modern world like this today.
this still gives me chills
I am literally in awe with the man with the cigar, such charisma wooow
Justine Cholin you mean Brunel?
That's Kenneth Branagh as Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
@@saifuciscam9566 Isambard Kingnel Brunard you mean
Isamdong King Kong Brunel I meant
The industrial revolution section of the opening ceremony was amazing and I thought was the best , the gradual one by one transformation of rural grass and plasters to a land of metal, steel iron and sulfur. The music was so surreal with the batting of drums filling the air all around you that builds and builds overtime till the Olympic rings are formed.
Who is here to cleanse their palette after Paris 2024 😂
If ever I need to motivate myself, I watch this. An outstanding piece of theatre - pure emotive drama with a soundtrack to die for. Well done to all concerned.
