      As a lifelong packer fan, I can tell you he was a solid, dependable, above average LB, by all accounts a great teammate, and represented the organization very well off the field. And that’s great. That’s all you can really ask for out of a player. But he wasn’t a freak athlete or anything. In fact, he rarely if ever made “wow” plays. As a reference, Clay Matthews made impressive plays 1-2 times a game.

      @@Dustomatic THANK YOU! Lifelong Packer fan who never missed a game in 40 years. AJ was above average and give him credit for his longevity, but like dustomatic said rarely made "wow" plays. His tackles were never behind the line of scrimmage - they were 5 yards down the field and he could never fight off the first blocker. He never lived up to his pre draft hype and certainly didn't deliver what you would expect from a 5th pick. The only pro bowl he was in was as an alternate (so he was never voted in.)

    When you ask chess players about their greatest games, they'll remember like 30 moves of a game from 11 years ago, and people think that's nuts. Bill Russel's wife once bought a tape of a game he played in college, and he was rattling off play by play before it happened. AJ Hawk here remembering every detail about a season opener is every bit as impressive to me as the fact that he launched over Darren Sproles.
    People at the top level of anything have insanely detailed memories of when they're paying their trade.

    • @justinssongsarehis2
      @justinssongsarehis2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      You bring up a really good point. Chess GMs not only remember THEIR games from 10 years ago, they also remember OTHER PEOPLE'S games as well. When you're at the top of your field, you need to know every nuance of how the game is being played at the highest level. This is especially important for coaches but even more impressive that players remember games from so long ago.
      Russel is actually really impressive because of sheer volume. In football, you only play 16 games a year. It's not that hard to remember one game from another. Basketball, Baseball, and Hockey are unique because those sports play so many games a year. It's much more impressive that a basketball player remembers specific games when he's played in over 1,000. Football not as much. But you'll see plenty of interviews from baseball and hockey guys who don't necessarily remember every detail of every game.

      I honestly imagine he enjoys it just as much if not more than them. His work is done and now he gets to enjoy the fruits of his labor but with that comes a loss of identity and purpose and a show like Pats show could give him a very necessary part of that back. I’d liken it to American Sniper where Chris Kyle shows up and all of the vets at the VA are surprised and somewhat awe-struck that a Sailor/SEAL of Chris’ legend came to hang out with them but they learned very quickly that he was just there to share thoughts and time with men that had experienced the same things he had and he needed it just as much as them, ya know? One, I love that AJ Hawk is STILL mad about this. Two, AJ Hawk was the 5th overall pick for a reason.
    Bonus facts, linebackers get drafted at the very top all the time. But, those guys are OLB's who rush the passer. An off ball linebacker like Hawk who aren't a full time pass rushers rarely get drafted that high. You have to be an incredible talent to get drafted 5 overall as an off ball guy.
    More facts, I am typing as I watch the video and as I type this stuff, they covered it in the video. The thing with Aaron Curry wasn't that he got hurt, it was that he put everything into making the NFL and getting that huge paycheck that once he got it, he had no drive. This was before the rookie pay scale IIRC, so his rookie contract was like that of an all pro free agent.

    I just looked up AJ Hawk's Wikipedia for stats and accolades. Under "Personal Life":
    "In the past Hawk has kept several exotic animals, including piranhas and an alligator, as pets. AJ has admitted to using his left foot to brake while driving and has anecdotally mentioned narcoleptic episodes while driving (but only through evening hours) as well as leaving the motor running while pumping gas.[46] AJ once crashed a golf cart into a pond at a charity golf event hosted by Brady Quinn."
    God bless his fans.

It's awesome to see someone come from here and gain as much success as you and you haven't changed up I think people from Pittsburgh crack up even more when you say certain things cause you sound like me and my friends betting sports and smoking bud.. keep up the good work Pat!

    Harry Carson and Willie Lanier put it best “the MLB is a thinking mans position”.
    AJ is one modest dude. Imagine being a field general knowing every little detail about your defence but also knowing how to diagnose what the other team is about to do on offence.
    The fact that he got drafted 5th overall as a MLB is huge. AJ downplays everything but this guy is extremely smart.
