There has been a lot of talk about Mario strikers battle league recently so let's take it back to a more simpler time in this retrospective. I absolutely love Mario Super Sluggers. It was my childhood! The story mode and recruiting lots of characters in it is why I love the game so much. Plus it’s huge cast of characters that’s literally the largest of any Mario game not counting MK Tour. So cool! I never actually played the GameCube one. Same for strikers as well actually.
Can't forget about the nice and nostalgic music, and the characters, especially Bowser Jr., were really showing attitude. Seeing that Mario Strikers Battle League is pretty butchered, I think Nintendo doesn't need to make another Mario Baseball game, or any other Mario Sports game for that matter.
You don’t need motion controls for super sluggers if you just hold the wii remote sideways. It plays even more like the original.
That's how normally play the game.

Want to throw out there, Mario Superstar baseball actually has a very active / thriving online and competitive community. They just had their biggest IRL tournament with around 50 entrants from across the US hosted in Long Island. They even have their own Dolphin client custom made for online play. It's a super cool community, I highly recommend checking them out.

Awesome vid as always Brad. By chance, were you aware of the online baseball cards you could collect as part of Mario Super Sluggers' marketing campaign?
If you went to kids sites such as Nickelodeon, Teletoon, YTV, Disney Channel, etc. back in 2008, the advertisement banners would show baseball card collectibles for every character in Super Sluggers' roster. The cool thing is that if you clicked on the ad, it would bring you to Super Sluggers' site where you would add that card to your collection, and it kept track of how many card you picked up through visiting different sites. Some cards were more rare than others (King K. Rool was almost impossible to find) as ads on sites would load different character baseball cards every time you refreshed a page (with characters liek Mario appearing more than others).
It's still one of the coolest marketing campaigns I've seen for a game, and I hope it returns when a Mario baseball game arrives on the Switch. - Kyle

Super Sluggers was one of the first games I ever played but one day the disc got so messed up that we weren’t able to get it working again. Years later we got the game again where I 100% completed it. Because of this story I always liked sluggers more even after I got my GameCube and the original game mainly because I couldn’t get use to the controls and I thought the story mode was kinda short.
Sluggers has what I would perhaps say would be the greatest roster of characters thanks to just how many characters are needed for the teams, and I think the other sports games and Mario Kart 9 (If that ever happens) should take inspiration from Mario Baseball to make their rosters better.
Mario Tennis Aces, Mario Golf World Tour, Mario Kart Wii, and Mario Kart Tour have about equally as great rosters.

So happy to see you cover these games! I grew up with Super Sluggers, my sister and I spent countless hours playing it together as kids.
One thing I feel like people always forget in super sluggers (although it makes sense since it's hidden in the midgame menu options) is that while motion controls are the default, you can play the game with sideways Wii remote (it's shown in page 6 of the manual, had to download the pdf from Nintendo just to make sure I wasn't misremembering) and it works almost exactly like the first game, but on a Wii remote, no motion controls included and I find it a lot more fun that way myself
Loved playing Super Sluggers as a kid. I would play on the easiest difficulty sometimes and hit like 50 home runs lol.
You forgot to mention the best part of Mario Superstar Baseball - the Star Missions in Challenge Mode :(
They make the game stand out that much over its sequel (which is a really good game too)
of course, there are a few missions like Baby Mario's "Catch a Booted Ball" BS that are painful and obnoxious if you're like me and try to 100% the game, but overall it's still such a nice touch that each character has unique missions to make them a star character.
Since modern Nintendo can't seem to get their sports games right, I'd rather see a remake or HD port of these games on Switch than a sequel.
Even if they did the original would be better since the controller for switch has bad motion controls

Wii Remote Sideways is the only way to play Mario Super Sluggers. I used to play the hardest level computer everyday for awhile and then I maxed out the runs against them and realized I had peaked in life.

Mario Superstar Baseball is so sick, there's been a competitive community growing for it over the last couple of years. There was actually an offline tournament for it a couple of days ago! I recommend checking out Dinger City if you are interested in getting into competitive Mario Baseball
Thank you so much for talking about these games. It feels like no one knows these games exist and if they do, they treat them as if they might as well not exist. These are my personal favorite sports games and some of my favorite games ever. I really hope that we get a return to this sport for Switch.

Baseball is my favorite sport and I grew up playing Super Sluggers. Really wish they'd make a Switch version with online play, tournaments and seasons.

Let me tell y’all the actual most under rated sports game is Mario hoops 3on3 that game was so fun and that’s the main Mario basketball only game that exists and it came out on the DS in 2005 Mario hoops is more forgotten cause they never made a Mario basketball only game again.
Yeah that game was so awesome i was addicted. Though that one is probably same issue as mario RPG, as it has a few final fantasy characters playable and might just be held back by having to negotiate

I remember getting Mario Superstar Baseball for my birthday back in 2005 (the year it was released) and I absolutely fell in love with it! I love the amount of depth and detail that went into this game series, especially the chemistry system. Sluggers is also really fun and amazing too!
My favorite Mario sports series. It was always overshadowed by Mario Strikers.

Mario Super Sluggers at least remembered King K. Rool exists before Smash Ultimate happened.
So many other cool things you didn’t mention like every character having a unique bat, every character having a 1-100 chemistry rating with every other character, and the star missions.
Other differences you didn’t mention are superstar baseball having a better star character system and overall having a harder cpu difficulty. Sluggers has the ability to use mii characters and multiple character variants in the same game which was a huge improvement

HI! I have a Wii and I was thinking of getting one of these games but I'm not sure which one I should get.
I can see why Superstar Baseball's single player campaign is considered better by many and the hub world looks nicer there.
Also, I read you can chose to use button controls in Super Sluggers when you hold the Wii remote sideways, but the controls still might not be as good compared to Superstar Baseball.
I also read that in Superstar Baseball, you can move the batter forwards or backwards and be able to control the direction of the ball by holding the direction on the stick. Are those not being in Super Sluggers a big loss or not that significant?
Right now, I think Superstar Baseball is more expensive than Super Sluggers and I don't even have a single Gamecube controller so it will cost more.

You forgot to mention how you can play with the wii remote sideways without the motion controls. This method gives you more options when it comes to running the bases and fielding.
Mario super sluggers was the only piece of media that ever succeeded in making me interested in baseball. Child me loved it and if I could find my wii I would probably still love it. (Its funny, I know exactly where all my wii games are, but not the console itself)

Super Sluggers story mode was awesome and fun in my opinion. The fact that you belittle it is probably why we never get good story modes from Mario sport games anymore.

My favorite? The one with Tiny Kong and K Rool. Also the fact a big time Nintendo guy doesn't know who she is just further shows Nintendo needs to use more of the DK crew again these days, as I'm pretty sure this was her last playable appearance, at the time of typing this

I grew up with super sluggers and I remember getting most of my home runs with King K Rool and Dark Bones who I think deserves to be in more games
I consider mario sports superstars as a semi revival of the series, but i really loved this game as a child and would love to see it return on the switch

Don’t worry, they’ll make a new one with 5 characters, 2 stadiums, and no single player mode.
It's funny watching videos like these in retrospect, mainly in the Sluggers section where items didn't feel that useful.
When if it turns out, items are very important to disrupt the opponent and synergies in general become more important than what the best players you can get is.
That and it was interesting you didn't bring up how much team composition in Sluggers

I loved Mario Super Sluggers as a kid. I actually liked the motion controls. I sold my Wii when I was younger so I haven’t played this game in years, but I loved it when I was younger. It can’t be Mario Super Sluggers without throwing your Wii remote at the TV 😂. I was playing the game at a friend’s house and I ended up doing that but he had a CRT TV so it didn’t do anything

Another contributing factor to why these game are underrated, is their treatment outside of America and Japan. Here in Europe, baseball is not nearly as popular as it is in America. To make things worse, Mario Superstar Baseball released only a week apart from Mario Smash Football (Super Mario Strikers) here in Europe. Soccer is the single most popular sport on this continent, so naturally Mario Smash Football got the most attention. While I don't know the sales numbers, Mario Superstar Baseball probably did poorly in Europe, because the sequel didn't even release here. Mario Super Sluggers is literally the only Mario sports game besides Mario's Tennis for the Virtual Boy that wasn't released in Europe. Nintendo of Europe was that unconfident in the game. The treatment of the series has been similar in Australia. If there never is a new Mario Baseball game again, it's because of it's limited appeal on a global scale and not necessarily because of the game's quality.
my ass was flabbergasted to hear the sluggers single player mode called a downgrade, that shit was my childhood and I literally have probably 100% it more times than I can count because I found it so fun, never really like superstar baseball's singleplayer mode
