One thing she never commented on, was when the hedgehog briefly lost his wrapped package of jam. It makes me feel that that represents his comfort zone. And just because you step out of your everyday comfort zone, doesn't mean that it is lost to you. It is still there, and while change and new experiences can be both scary and good.....your comfort zone of the familiar can still exist. Very beautiful story.

This is a beautiful explanation of losing something, but realizing it is still there, because in the end, the hedgehog left the fog, but still he knew that the creatures he met are not gone but are still in there somewhere.. Maybe he learned that things in the fog, though not seen are still there.. It changed his mindset completely, widened his world and made him empathize the creatures in the fog rather than fear them..

I am half Russian half Dutch. Born in the USSR. Era of stagnation under Brezhnev is viewed by most as the most prosperous, quite and happy time of all Soviet rule. The images with empty shops is from the 80s era -- era of Perestroika and change.

thanks for this it felt kind of weird cause she coupled those 2 together and it didn't make much sense.
Happy is a relative term , but quiet prob encapsulates the era better.

Interesting analysis, thank you for your job. To be honesty, i've always interpret this movie as a reflection. White horse can symbolize the death, and the Bear - the life or someone important who tries to keep you alive - that's why he always call for Hedgehog through the fog and saying that there would be no one to count stars with. And the Hedgehog is trying to find himself looking at many things, like the tree (i think it's a huge reference to one very important classic book, tho) and the well. And the owl is probably the anxiety. When the Hedgehog falls in the river and doesn't do anything, it means that he obeyed the fate, but eventually, life gave him a chance - so he landed on the bank of the river and went to the Bear's fire with ordinary routine

"People were hoping for change in the era of stagnation" -- nothing could be further from the truth. 1) People weren't engaged in politics and didn't see the whole Soviet system could/should have been changed. The young and middle-aged people, except for a marginally small group of dissidents, didn't question the Soviet system per se, but usually pointed at local defects and issues of bureacracy and party apparatchiks. Only under Perestroyka (1987-1991) they changed their minds. 2) The name "stagnation era" (застой) was coined in the late 1980s by Gorbachov's government. At the time, nobody saw it as stagnation (or literally "standstill").
I recommend Alexey Yurchak's book in English, "Everything was forever until it was no more", which analyses the feelings and thought of contemporaries from their contemporary diaries.

Glasnost was what did USSR in , it broke the world/reality/paradigm people lived and that was enough to bring down the whole system, China didn't make that mistake and held strong thanks to Deng and the Tiananmen square massacre , it sacrificed a few for the good of a billion , in the west this is blasphemy but it is the truth.

I've heard a comment that the river scene shows that the hedgehog is truly Russian. A western hedgehog would instantly try to save himself and strugle to get himself back on the shore, but Russian hedgehog is rather indifferent and just keeps floating in the river, wondering what will happen next. That was at least one of the interpretations.

Wow, you did a great job and have a good voice for this. You're right, the 1970's in the USSR definitely saw a lot of internal expansion (as a result of external stagnation) in art and philosophy; you can really see both the frustration and the metaphysical curiosity especially in Andrei Tarkovsky's work, but also the slew of strange philosophical sci-fi films and novels (Golem, In the Dust of the Stars, Dead Mountaineer's Hotel, etc) and the philosophy of Vasily Nalimov and others. So in a sense, stagnation (at least economically and socially) can maybe be productive?

    Russian here.
"Hedgehog in the Fog" is really a story about sudden encounter of something much bigger and spiritual than our daily routine, than us and our life. And how true friendship is still more important than anything else.
But somehow jerry-rigging it to political situation is... it's just amazing feat of stupidity. How in blazes did you even achieve that? How did you came to such conclusion? Have you tried to uncouple yourself from political and look at this just from existential point of view?
I honestly hope that this will inspire you to redo this review and make it free from politics. I believe it will only benefit from that. And sorry for rudeness, but that's how I express extreme disagreement.
This story is independent from political situation. It's eternal and imperishable.

I don’t think it is rude. It is passionate, and fair to say. I think we have to be a little bit passionate about misunderstandings we perceive, in the interest of mutually approaching truth. She will probably take it gracefully in that light.
I would probably turn the microscope around and ask, what cultural bubble preserves someone in the assumption that a sense of anticipation and excitement about one’s life prospects is intrinsically dependent upon living in a nation experiencing industrial domestic growth in a way that was aetiologically impossible until the late 18th century?

This animation was made way after the Era of Stagnation of Brezhnev. It was made during Gorbachev's perestroika. During this time many movies forbidden by Soviet censorship both for political inconsistency, and for general immoral attitudes (read LGB behaviours). I generally agree with the censoring of inconsistency part (and the LGB part), but in the 90-s I saw this animation as a kid, and "Hedgehog in the Fog" still captivates me today.

You are wrong. The cartoon was filmed in 1975. And it was one of the best times for the Soviet people. The era of stagnation only means the absence of political reforms and changes, which were not really needed by the Soviet people, whose standard of living reached its maximum during these years. It was then in 1985 that the traitor Gorbachev began to destroy the Soviet Union, believing in the promises of the Empire of Lies.

There's one flaw in your analysis. Hedgehog in the Fog was made in the early 1930s, not during the Era of Stagnation. It was merely restored in 1975.

    • @13jamesjoyce
      @13jamesjoyce 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Not sure about that. Wikipedia gives the date as 1975. I don't think there is any way this film technically could have been made in the 1930's to look the way it does. Do you mean the 'story' as opposed to the animation?
Many of these Russian Childrens Animations were restored in the USA. In this excellent podcast you will discover the extraordinary story behind those resorations: thisiscriminal.com/episode-161-only-in-hollywood-3-26-2021
