Remember it’s the weight rating. It doesn’t matter if you actually ever weigh over 2600lbs, if your vehicles gross weight rating or combined with trailer gross rating (max rated weight) is over 26,000lbs (most common) then that’s the threshold. So look at the sticker on your vehicle and trailer to find out your rating. It’s the gross Rating (Max weight) of the Truck (look at sticker) plus gross weight of the trailer (based on sticker). The Z 3610 (my sticker) is 17695lbs. So if your trucks max gross rating is 8,306 or higher you need a Class A non-CDL in states like TX or NC. Any truck that can legally tow a 3610 will have at least a gross max of 12000. Thus, in Texas if you have a z3610 you must have a Class A Non-CDL license (CDL would work too just not necessary).
Depends on the state, as stated by another. I’m a South Dakota resident and we don’t need anything special. If we relocated to say Nevada, yeah, a non- commercial class A is required for more than a 12,500 pound trailer.
Confirming that TX requires a non-CDL class B for a MH over 26,000#. Written test on one chapter of the CDL test + road test. I’m from a small town in TX with a DPS office. Took the paperwork and a photo of the rig to the office, they confirmed requirements, and got me set up with the written test and road test appointments within a week. I’m glad they didn’t ask how the MH got to the office for the road test. 😅
Thanks for watching and your DMV was in the ball. Mine did not know and had to call in to find out what test I needed. lol. I actually needed up at a different location for the test that was more familiar.
you shook me for a moment. I do have a CDL as I drove a school bus for yars. I was told by DMV it was not needed for an RV. Your last list stopped at Rhode Island so I got on DMV website and OOPS you missed Virginia. Liked video as it told me to stay put here in Va.
About driving in other states,I use to work for the US Govt. in New Orleans, one of our agents went on vacation in Calif.,was stopped and the trooper arrested him for some vechicle code in that state. Now he only showed his drivers lic. as he did not like to take advantage of his federal positition. The cop proceded to arrest him after calling a few others to assist and brought him to a judge. My friend THEN pulled his badge to the judge and the cop and local prosecutor needed to explain what they did and why. To make matters worse for these clowns my friend contacted John Volz from New Orleans to contact the local feds. My friends RV was returned and allowed to go on his way. To this day I stay out of Calif. as they get strange at times.
@@robertcolpitts4534 great question and I cover it in the very last part of the video. You must meet the requirements of the state your licensed is issued from (your residence). But then you can drive with that license in all 50 states with no issues even if the foreign state has different requirements. That’s partially because of the application of the full faith and credit provision of the US constitution.
I watch a vehicle repair channel on TH-cam. It specializes in old busses and RV's made from a bus. A privately owned Bus or Bus/RV does not require a yearly DOT safety inspection that commercially operated trucks do and that's a problem. The maintenance is ignored and they become dangerous. Another issue is air brakes. All CDL truck drivers must have training in them to be licensed but not private owners. Ignorance of how air brakes work is a short cut to accidents. Anyone who operates a vehicle with air brakes should have an endorsement on their license to do so. Both of these measures are opposed by AARP, the RV industry and senior citizens who operate them and that must stop. It is reprehensible to jeopardize the motoring public in order to let ignorant unqualified people operate recreational vehicles without proper preparation and training.
Many states restrict the width of a vehicle to 8 feet except for specially designated roads, usually interstates and some US highways. Many RV's are 8'6" wide and automatically are illegal to use in many of the places you see them. Enforcement is always a matter of whether the cop had a fight with his wife the night before.
Great info, I have a question, the 26001# limit, is that actual weight or GVWR of my pickup ans 5th wheel trailer, the differance between my GVWR and actual weight is 5000# less, this is with a full tank of gas poeple ready to camp etc?
It’s the max rated rate. So if your class A is rated to be able to be loaded up to a gross weight of 26.001 or more you need a Class B in states with that requirement. If your the max gross rating of your truck added to your max rated gross weight of your trailer is over 26001lbs a class a in states that require it for over 26000lbs. Thanks for watching!!!
I laugh everytime someone in a video says "You need to talk to your own attorney". Newsflash: Most people are not financially able to have their own attorney.
Thanks for watching and commenting. It’s my job as an attorney to encourage everyone to get one to keep us in work. Support your local attorney. lol. 😂
Ohio is nuts: for 5th wheels as long as it’s a “bi level and purpose built for rv” you’re good to 45 ft and up to the special permit weight limit which is 60k or 90k (I can’t remember it was just so insane I couldn’t stop laughing). I’d love to see 60k in a 3610 😂
A requirement for a non-cdl is still a requirement for a cdl. You can call it whatever you want, but it does not change the fact you have to have a type of cdl when the law says you dont need it. You know the saying a rose by any other name is still a rose. A cdl by any other name is still a cdl.

In Nevada, if your rig weighs over 10000 lbs, you need a NCDL license

It would be better to call them Commercial CDL and Non-Commercial CDL
