- The Memphis Grizzlies got some old fashioned "good news, bad news" going recently. The good news? Ja Morant should be fully cleared from his injury sooner rather than later. The bad news? Jaren Jackson Jr. only got ONE NBA All-Defense vote and Head Coach Taylor Jenkins may be on the "hot seat". What all does it mean? Host Joe Mullinax breaks it down on this episode of Locked on Grizzlies!

Jenkins has shown he is great at developing players. His own growth is in winning basketball during playoffs. Let him grow as we do with players
Locked On Grizzlies, This is great! I liked it and subscribed!
Jenkins does get the most blame for the team’s 3 point shooting. His “green light” policy should have never been. Adams offensive rebounding use to kinda make up for it; currently we don’t have that so Bane and Kennard should be the only 2 with a green light.
To cover for individual defensive liabilities, Jaren is required at the 4 to be able to roam. We have matchup issues in that 6’7-6’9 range. Zaire and Jake not being where they need to be hurts.
Ja and Jaren were playing pickup together with Ben Simmons a few years ago. I remember Ja saying that year he had to start working by himself to work on things he didn’t want revealed until the season but I too hope they work on some things together since they can this summer
I was out on Taylor Jenkins until this season happened. I was very impressed with what he was able to do with what’s available this season
What Taylor did this season was to dig himself a hole. Vince and GG would still be in G-League if it hadn't been for all the teams' injuries. He's neglected to have a back-up center on the roster for three years now. Now, the center issue will cost a 1st round draft pick.
Jaren's lack of defensive productivity is directly related to the timehe had to spend playing center - which is NOT his position. What did everyone think was going to happen?
I have problems with coach. Nothing that can’t be fixed. We never attack opponents in foul trouble, we have players always complaining (staying on offensive end on a defensive run), and more. All things that can be fixed.
Huh?!? Our team never complains? I notice other teams are always in refs ears AND IT WORKS, we are silent. Jenkins needs to ride refs harder and so do our players.
Taylor Jenkins post season coaching has been down right ATROCIOUS:
2020- bubble play in game versus Portland he only played DeAnthony Melton 15 minutes in that game which featured Dame and McCullough although Melton was one of the best perimeter defenders on the roster.
2021- Utah basically surrounded Gobert with 4 shooting guards yet the Grizzlies started 2 centers and a power forward(Jonas, Jaren, and Kyle) and Taylor didn't make a single adjustment to his lineup and lost 4 straight games including both at FedEx Forum.
2022- Lost game one at home versus Golden State although Draymond Green got ejected at halftime. Only played Jaren 30 minutes in that game although he was cooking and didn't make the defense/offense substitutions late in that game.
2023- Lost game 4 vs the Lakers although he has a two point lead with only six seconds remaining because for some reason he had his THIRD string center (Xavier Tillman) attempt to defend LeBron James in space at the top of the key.
Taylor Jenkins has lost FOUR consecutive home games(game 3 vs Utah, game 1 vs Minnesota, game 1 vs Golden State, game 1 vs Lakers) where he has home court advantage going into the game. I bet that had NEVER happened in the history of the NBA before. The fact that Taylor wasn't fired after game 6 vs the Lakers when the Grizzlies were embarrassed and got beaten by 40 points is an absolute mystery.
Agreed 100%! Post season success requires that a team have productive rotation players. Aldama, Z Williams, and Konchar aren't those players.
We at the very least have to make the WCF in my opinion for a successful year.
Now is not the time for Jenkins to be on the hot seat. What needs to be addressed is availability and integration. With the emergence of "GG" Jackson and Vince Williams Jr. showing great potential, that is all the more reason to keep Jenkins as head coach. Give him at least 2 more seasons before evaluation to see if he can help the players understand the defensive schemes of the team and where everyone is supposed to be when defending.
What is important is the caliber of players they add to the roster going forward. Who the Grizzlies add to the roster shows how serious they are about being in contention for a championship. They need to add Nicolas Claxton, preferably a veteran big like Drummond and draft a big man. While it might be preferable to have Mikal Bridges instead of Marcus Smart, there are still some ways to make it work. After all, having Smart, Jaren, and Claxton on the same roster could provide the Grizzlies with the NBA's best defense. It is up to Taylor Jenkins to integrate more offense into the lineup when needed, whether that means having GG or Vince to come in and score when needed or adding a version of Luke Kennard that is healthier and less costly. If other teams have added the correct free agents such as the Timberwolves acquiring Rudy Gobert and the Mavericks acquiring Kyrie Irving and have seen success, it seems like the Grizzlies need to follow suit.
Jaren is a 4 and is not quite as stable as a 5. A 5 needs to be good at rebounding, setting screens, and controlling the post. It is embarrassing to see him get owned by Anthony Davis; however, the Grizzlies are a team and should act accordingly. LeBron helps by making Davis better by passing him the ball in key spots; that's what team members do - help each other - so too should the Grizzlies. Place Jaren in his correct position and surround him with the best players available to bolster his skill set.
Also, that is wonderful news to hear that Ja is healthy again. I hope he and the team stay healthy and learn how to stay healthy. Most of Michael Jordan's career, he seemed to be healthy and available; the team needs to notice that. It would be nice to see all Grizzlies team members come back next season healthier and better players than before.
Man, people need to understand that we have not had the whole team together in two years.
Last year we had ja for only 9 games. What team is a playoff team without their superstar? There is a few.
But even Bane was out around half the season
Steven Adams missed the whole season before he was traded and then we were out a center
JJJ missed 20 games
Marcus smart missed 60 plus games
Brandon clarke missed 80 games
Santi missed 25 games
Kennard missed half the season
Last season was insane.
I expect if healthy a top 3 seed and a deep playoff run. I think the 2nd round through the finals will all be close matchups win or lose next season.
When you want to fire your HC
Ask yourself, for who
I like our coach. Even when they suck, they play hard
I actually thought every coach after Marc was good. Unless they must have a former player in mind
Jaren didn't do so great in that summer league team either so I'm not buying the decline was because he was dealing with our multiple injuries. But I'm a crabby old man, so meh.
🔥Jenkins
He better prove he can coach better
No, he's not, an aggregator misquoted Hollinger.
Joe your take on Jaren is trash can’t penalize him & prop him up at the same time
...sure you can? He was asked to do more this season than he had ever been asked to do. That can have an impact. - JM
