Nile Rogers, Bernard Edwards, Tony Thompson & Rob Sabino were the core rhythm section on this classic, vintage recording, that, I believe was one of the first multi-tracks to be recorded on a reel-to-reel digital tape machine that Rogers just purchased; a SONY model 3324 & a SONY model PCM-F1 2-track deck for mixdown purposes, for a truly ungodly price and bottom-lined it as a rental fee to Warner Brothers/Sire to try to re-coup the insane cost. (I believe he made it all back!) Just how one can make "hard-splice-razor-blade-edit-cuts" on an PCM-F1, still baffles me. I don't think it's possible. Engineer Jason Corsaro must have had some editing to do in the analog realm before final mastering. Even so, the end result was the future of 1980-style of digital recording production techniques. In this upload we hear a slightly different mix, than that of the classic album mix. Thompson's drums are more subdued here and we hear more of Rogers' guitar tracks. It would be a true wonder to hear the album mix, without the lead vocal, backing vocals and end fade. I would almost give up a VITAL ORGAN, to hear that original mix from Mr. Corsaro! BCRadio

Sometimes (most of the time) producers will have their very trusted, in-house, seasoned 5-star sound engineers, make a fully instrumental mix BY JUST PULLING OUT THE LEAD & BACKING VOCAL and leave ALL OTHER instrumental rhythm tracks alone in their original mix style...again...minus that lead & back up vocal. This is simply done because the vocal(s) were assigned to a separate "sub-group" of faders. So...in reality...the master session tape spool is given another pass-through and those vocal "sub-group faders" are brought down to 0dB. Very simple to obtain. Here we have Mr. Rogers & Mr. Corsaro FULLY RE-PREPARING a slightly different "instrumental accompaniment mix" from scratch...BUT JUST LEAVING OUT THE LEAD & BACKING VOCAL...hence, by taking this approach (sometimes days or weeks later) a "new" or "different" interpretation is derived, simply by default of memory...or, lack of memory. What I would COVET to hear, would be such the first example that I spoke of, but that mix, probably never did exist in the first place. If that mix was available to review...again...we would hear LESS of Mr. Rogers' guitar tracks and more of Mr. Thompson's VERY POWERFUL drum tracks with the incredible amount of "gated reverb", because THAT is the way the album version mix was prepared...but we are NOT hearing here.
