    Thanks for all these videos Marty! I watch and enjoy all of them. Your videos are part of what got me back into hiking and backpacking. This year I did Egypt lake solo, and just finished skoki loop solo as well. I also did 2 other nights out with my son. Not quite the 37 ish that you have 😉. Cheers!

      That's awesome. It was a great summer for hiking. I only had rain on 4-5 days, the others were all sunny. Cheers.

      That climb up to the actual basin was one of the hardest I remember. All day I kept dreading the hike back down. That wall was steep.

    Wow Marty, that climb look dangerous. But the reward was priceless. Funny Jeff gave out the "Marty shout"! It has to feel amazing knowing you have gone to areas where most of us only see on a calendar or postcard. To top it off you guy's had the park to yourselves. Thx for sharing, Take care Bud.. P.S. I have to get up there so I too can learn the Marty Shout!!

    Love the part where you are cooking at a high level in the back country. My favorite part of the day when I go out backpacking for a few days, getting some great exercise, views then make some great dinner!

      So true! I've been hiking with an executive Chef for the last year named Evan Robertson, and he's made us some meals that were out of this world.

    My son-in-law and I did that basin 3 weeks before you. So no smoke and brilliant blue skies for us!! We did have critters in our camp (same camp as you) overnight (elk??) and a massive windstorm which blew that fine rock flour right through our tent mesh. Good to know, if that was your toughest climb, then my 59 yo legs can carry me up anything!! (Although the K-pass loop scree slope climb along Beatty Creek to Beatty Lake in full packs (late in the day) was my biggest challenge

    Wow! That brought out the mountain goat in you guys. That basin looks like and old syncline. Neat to find the fossils up there. I’m always looking for fossils when hiking. Insane views from that cliff. That video of Jeff on the side slope with the glacier in the background really showed the extreme of that slope. This was a very interesting video, the graininess and haziness gave it a historical old reel to reel feel. Fantastic country as always! Thanks a ton.

      1 lb each. We were supposed to eat them on day 1, so Geoff didn't have to carry them, but they were still frozen. I'm glad we ate them on the second night. I was starving, and they hit the spot.

    Glad to see you are enjoying our smoke. No I am not really glad. You can imagine how awful it is down here. I would not mind camping at that waterfall. Was that the same waterfall when you were standing at the brink, or a different one?

    • @Martyupnorth

      The one in the thumbnail is the upper Petain fall. The one where I had lunch is the lower Petain fall. The two are separated by 1,000 yds in the basin. Please stay safe. Cheers.

    • @Martyupnorth
      @Martyupnorth  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's worth it, but it's a very hard wall to climb. I was actually not looking forward to the decent at the end of the day. It looks like it's possible to climb above the upper falls and get a close-up view of the glacier. I'll be going back as well. It would be an amazing place to pitch a tent.

    • @awalkintherockies9475
      @awalkintherockies9475 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Martyupnorth All the best places are tough to get to. I think I would spend the first night at the creek camp and possibly move camp up to the basin the next day, it would definitely make things more challenging with a heavy pack but it would be a cool place to stay a night and maybe bag a peak. I better stay in shape this winter lol

    you mention of wheelchair accessible trail, where is the nearest trailhead for that. where to drive to unload wheelchair?
    did you stay on one campground for 2 nights?

    • @Martyupnorth
      @Martyupnorth  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Elk Lakes Provincial Park is located in southeastern BC, about 104 kilometres north of Sparwood. Sparwood is about 260 km south of Calgary. Turn off Highway 3 at Sparwood and go north on Highway 43 till you reach the community of Elkford, a distance of 35 kilometres. From here, travel the gravel road on the west side of the Elk River. Approximately 47 kilometres north of Elkford the road crosses the Elk River and joins the Kananaskis Power Line Road. It is 5.8 kilometres from the crossing to the Cadorna Creek trailhead; the Elk Lakes trailhead is a further 16.1 kilometres. So from Calgary to the wheelchair trail head is about 6 hrs away by car.

    • @Martyupnorth
      @Martyupnorth  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Freeze them. They take a day to thaw. Keep them wrapped in paper and at the bottom of the pack and they can keep for 2-3 days, especially in late summer. They were amazing.

    Nice work Marty. Im looking to expand from my day hikes and scrambles and get in some backpacking. I live in the Columbia Valley, just a few hours from Calgary so we have a similar backyard. I was wondering if you had any recommended trails for a first overnight trip ? Thanks !

    • @Martyupnorth

      I always recommend the same few trails for first overnights. Glacier Lake on the Banff/Jasper Border. Point, Tombstone or Forks in Kananaskis. Send me a DM with more info on you expectations and I can help you out. martinbelanger2015@gmail.com Cheers.

    • @Martyupnorth
      @Martyupnorth  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. I have no idea what's going on with my subscriber count. I turned it off so it wouldn't be a distraction. Can you actually see it? All social media platforms have one form of shadow banning or another. I'm politically on the right side of the spectrum, so that makes it an uphill battle on platforms like TH-cam, Facebook and Twitter. I'm also very pragmatic when it comes to most issues. That's a function of 30 years as an engineer. One issue in particular, climate change, can be very polarizing. I love the outdoors, but I'm not a typical "tree hugger". Cheers and thanks for the feedback.

    • @AndyL940
      @AndyL940 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Martyupnorth yes I can see it. One day it’s 30k then 4 million ..lol. I was just curious is all . Probably because it’s off . Thanks again for your videos. I’m dying to get over there from Australia. I’m not a tree hugger either , I fish and hunt and love the outdoors. I won’t be changing for anyone, however I am passionate about land management and looking after the bush . I’m proud of my anti greens sticker on my land cruiser. I probably do more for the environment than any misguided so-called Greenie ! Cheers
