Fantastic movie haul here, Dave. I really hope you enjoy Monsoon Wedding. It really is so much fun. Also happy you were able to get your copy of, Targets. There was definitely some backup on Amazon. Barnes and Noble was absolutely on point with shipping/delivery this round so I was ordering from them more than last year. Purple Noon is another good one as is It Happened One Night. I'm so curious, and scared, about the Douglas Sirk films. Curious because I see how much you're enjoying them and scared because if you recommended it, I'm sure I'm going to enjoy it. 😂😂😂 Great video, as always and enjoy your haul. 👋👋👋🥸🥸
Thanks Stephanie. Totally agree that Barnes and Noble was on point this sale for shipping/delivery. Hope you enjoy the Douglas Sirk films, I'm really enjoying all of the films and supplements on the Criterion releases. Talk soon! 🥸😀
Targets! I was absolutely floored by this film. I wasn't really expecting much since it was only Bogdonavich's first feature. But I was totally blown away! That guy had a perfect movie right out of the gate. Also, very reminiscent of Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Great haul Dave, thanks for sharing! Along with the Sirk titles you mentioned, The Tarnished Angels is a good one. It stars Sirk regulars Rock Hudson and Robert Stack. I saw it a month or so ago on the Criterion Channel which had a spotlight on Douglas Sirk and I managed to watch quite a few of his films. Thunder on the Hill starring Claudette Colbert was another one I enjoyed. I believe both of these films are available from Kino, if you're interested. Keep up the great work!
Love the channel, Dave. Like a previous commenter, i'll also recommend Douglas Sirk's "The Tarnished Angels (1957)," based on a novel by William Faulkner. It's set in Depression-era New Orleans and covers a 3-day period in the life of flying circus performers, including a love triangle. Crackerjack script, thrilling stunt work, moody b&w cinematography and an incisive inquiry into the showbiz/entertainment world of the Thirties. The cast features Sirk collaborators Robert Stack, Dorothy Malone, and Rock Hudson--the same trio that tore-up the screen a year earlier in Sirk's Written on the Wind. The entire cast seems to have a natural, instinctive feel for the material and the excellent chemistry between the lead players is maintained start-to-finish. I'm fairly sure the Kino blu-ray is still available and it features a fine audio commentary by Film Historian Imogen Sara Smith. I bought Inland Empire, Lost Highway, Walker, Three Fantastic Journeys by Karel Zeman, Thelma & Louise, and three Terry Gilliam titles--Jabberwocky, Baron Munchausen, and Brazil.
Thanks so much. I need to pickup "The Tarnished Angels" from Kino Lorber and am looking forward to watching. Funny, I just recently finished "As I Lay Dying" by Faulkner and am interested to read the novel that "The Tarnished Angels" is based on ("Pylon"). I love the chemistry of everyone in the Sirk films as well as the script. Love everything I've seen so far. Wow, you picked up some great films during the sale!!
Very nice haul! I started getting interested in Douglas Sirk in the last few years. The only one of his films I've been watching for decades is the 1959 remake of IMITATION OF LIFE, which is a big favorite. Of the titles I picked up recently, ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS is my favorite, but I also love WRITTEN ON THE WIND. I picked up TARGETS as soon as it was released on Criterion because I was too impatient to wait for a sale! Amazing film. Terrifying, and all too realistic. My Chaplin experience doesn't yet include THE CIRCUS, and I'm very curious about PURPLE NOON. I may make one final visit to Barnes & Noble before this sale ends. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks. I love Written on the Wind, one of my very favorites and really looking forward to exploring the other Sirk films that I haven't seen. Hope you were able to make that final trip to B&N. I usually pick a few titles for each sale and then wait for the next one. 😀
Have you watched any Chaplin films yet? Typically, Modern Times is considered his masterpiece. City Lights is considered his most widely enjoyed. The Great Dictator is his most important for obvious reasons. To me, The Kid is his most impressive for being a shorter movie that really packs a punch. However, my favorite Chaplin to watch is The Gold Rush. To sum it up, watch more Chaplin! Haha
I've seen The Great Dictator which was very good. Need to watch more though. I tend to gravitate towards Harold Lloyd and/or Buster Keaton films but do enjoy Chaplin also.
@@CinemaDaveMedia The Kid should be on your shortlist for films to try next! It's his earliest and shortest feature film, and the ending really separates his storytelling from all the others at the time, although I do love Keaton and Lloyd as well. The Kid is on the Criterion Channel and it's probably the best 4k transfer they have done on a Chaplin film.
@@CinemaDaveMedia One more recommendation for his early work in shorts. The Immigrant is so good and only 20 minutes or so in length. Many good streams on TH-cam I have seen posted.
The Circus is such a fantastic film! Everything that Criterion has released from Chaplin’s filmography is pure gold. I think I’m going to pick up Imitation of Life today before the sale ends. Great haul Dave! Thanks for sharing what films you added to your Criterion collection.
Hi Dave. Another easy-to-watch video. Keep up the good work. I had a light haul this month. I picked up ‘The Red Shoes’ 4K, ‘Detour’, and ‘The Silence of the Lambs’ which is to replace my DVD copy from ‘98. I live in Vancouver and we don’t have Barnes & Noble up here. I was in S. California on vacation and found myself going into 3 different B&N. The selection at one store was great, while the other 2 stores - not-so-much. Really small sections. I asked a clerk if this was it, she replied “we keep shrinking the section each year”.
Thanks so much for watching and the kind words. Wow, sounds like you got some great films during the sale. Hope you enjoy! My B&N doesn't have much stock at least on the films I was looking for so I had to order online.
Nice haul. I picked up several of the discs you chose this past month, as well. I saved up for months and held off buying the more recent releases as well as items on my wish list until the sale started. I am most proud of myself for holding off on Thelma and Louise after hearing so much praise about the transfer. I spent entirely too much money, but try to concentrate on the savings because of the sale. I also now own a lot more great movies. I agree that Barnes and Noble did a wonderful job getting my orders to me quickly. I don't believe anything took longer than three business days from the day I ordered them. I haven't really dug into Douglas Sirk just yet, but I probably will someday soon. I find that I enjoy most anything you and Stephanie suggest so I'll just put some of his movies on my wish list and wait for the next sale. Thanks for sharing your pick ups. I always enjoy your videos and manage to learn a thing or two while I'm at it. I'll see you on the livestream.
Thanks Steve. I definitely ordered more than I thought I would this sale and was so happy with the amazing shipping from B&N. I really enjoying the films of Douglas Sirk including all of the supplements on each Criterion release. See you tomorrow on the livestream.
I ended up visiting two stores (which were very disappointing in their lack of stock) and making two orders from the website. I got a total of 8 Criterion movies; 2 of which were 4K (Dazed and Confused and Wings of Desire). The others were Targets (funny enough, I too was ready to have it), Last Hurrah for Chivalry, Thief, and (because I'm watching all Kurosawa's films this year thanks to another TH-camr) Throne of Blood, Ikiru, and Hidden Fortress.
My order from Barnes and Noble came really fast. I think it was only about three days! I got It Happened One Night, Seven Samurai, Targets, and i just decided to go ahead and upgrade my very old dvd of The Graduate to the Criterion blu ray.
Cool that your order arrived so quickly, I had the same experience. Great to hear that you upgraded your copy of The Graduate too. I wish there were more Mike Nichols films in the Criterion Collection.
Cool stuff Dave! My wife and I watched It Happened One Night within the last 6 months and loved it. I have it in the Columbia Classics vol. 3 4k set. It also has the 1956 remake with Jack Lemon and June Allyson in the set which we haven't watched yet. I might pick up one more from Criterion before the sale ends then my wallet will have no function other than to hold my driver's license. Thanks Dave!
Thanks Michael. Cool that you picked up the Columbia Classics set. I am looking forward to revisiting It Happened One Night. Hope you enjoyed the sale.
My haul this month was maybe the most eclectic I have had. About five or six different purchases, many on a whim, most if not all blind buys. I got The Servant, After Hours, and the Ranown set as my recent release targets. Branded to Kill 4K upgrade too. Then Walker, Mishima, Bigger Than Life, Purple Noon, and Destry Rides Again. Maybe another or two I’m forgetting!
Great selection of pickups! I'd recommend the Douglas Sirk double feature Cohen Films put out with A Scandal in Paris and Lured. Lucille Ball is in Lured and she's great. I don't think it was on sale in the Kino sale this time but maybe in one of the next ones.
Thanks so much and really appreciate the recommendations. I just ordered The Tarnished Angels and Battle Hymn from Kino but will put the double feature set on my wish list.
I have the Masters of Cinema release of The Tarnished Angels but have yet to watch it. Having part of my collection packed away is no fun. I do have to get a few other MoC titles or for my Asian film viewing so maybe I can pull that out to watch as well! Also, I'm going to have to look into Battle Hymn. I'm not familiar with that title. Take care, Dave
Perhaps it’s an obvious or cliché choice but my favorite Chaplin film is City Lights. Such a great film, conveys so much emotion despite the filmmaking limitations of the time. It was the first of his that I saw and since then I’ve seen several others, notably The Great Dictator and Modern Times (a close 2nd and 3rd place).
Correction: I meant to say Purple Noon and NOT Purple Moon 😀

Cool, anything with Boris Karloff and I'm all in on the movie. Glad you enjoyed it. 😀
Purple Noon is based the Ripley book by Patricia Highsmith.
Thanks, forgot to mention in the video. I love Strangers on the Train too which is based on the Highsmith book.
