    Awesome video! I'm about to try and rebuild the alternator on my 2002 Chevy Venture, and I think you might have just given me the edge I needed. The van's at 325,000 miles right now and I'm trying to hit at least 500,000 before I'm willing to get a new vehicle

    We actually build the AD244 series alternator up to 200A with an upgraded internal bridge rectifier, or up to 250A with an external rectifier.

  • @alternatorman
    @alternatorman  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It depends on the engine in your Firebird. If you have the 5.7L, that Bosch unit and the AD244 series alternators will fit. If you have the 3.8L, only another CS130D will work.

    The problems with the CS130D is why I retrofitted my 97 Lumina to a CS144 from a Tahoe. It only required swapping the regulator plug and adding the remote sense wire.

  • @alternatorman

    The Ford Focus alternator is not technically controlled by the PCM, it has an internal regulator that communicates to the PCM. The only way to full field it is by opening the alternator up and finding the ground-to-test connection.

    just a quick question for you while changing the alternator on my old Mercedes diesel I discovered that somebody had changed it to the cs130 just like the one you showed in this video. this was an upgrade to the original 50 amp alternator that was on the vehicle. what is the part number for that specific alternator that you showed in the video or what vehicles did it come on because when I Google the cs130 the mountains look quite different than the one I have which is the one like you listed thank you in advance

    @moparerrnocar 5 months ago, whew ! Anyway, if you go to the Dixie Electric website, they have an electronic e-catalog with all the pics. WAI Global also gives details about all the vehicles you mention. Funny how newer Ford alternators have a brush holder similar to the CS130d units.

    Yes, you can interchange the 244 with the 130D, but you have to change the belt because the geometry is different. Changing the alternator pulley won't help.

  • @alternatorman
    @alternatorman  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Depends on the year. Model years 1997 and earlier with the 5.7L engine can take a 350A CS144, 1998 and after use the AD244.

  • @alternatorman

    Odds are the the bridge rectifier has failed. Stock rectifiers are not designed to handle 300A output, but many rebuilders and high output alternator manufacturers will use a 300A stator with a 200A rectifier.

    I'm curious what "sound" you get with a good rectifier bridge when you touch that lead. I'm in the middle of testing my alternator. Looks like a bad rectifier bridge. Definitely not brush's. I'm just curious if it's a specific sound a bad alternator makes, or just the fact the stator grabs the windings in the first place?

    Ive got a 99 chevy silverado. When I start it for the first time on a cold day or morning i get a battery light and it seems like its not charging.. After about 30 minutes of idling, it will suddenly start charging correctly and will remain working correctly all through the day. The next day though it will do it all over again. I seems like the cold is what is causing it and once it gets a bit warm under the hood it starts to charge again.. I hope you can help. :)

After driving 10minutes my dash instrument panel went out completely including my speed odometer. I was able to drive until I had to stop for a red light then it died. Im sure it's the alternator because the battery is only 2 months old. is there a way there a why to test the alternator without taking it off. it's the original alternator with 220k miles thanks hopefully you can help

    Before going through the hassle of putting a used alternator in my Chevy Venture (3+ hr job), I figured I'd test it first. 120 amp stock gm 10317648. Ain't forking out $370 - $410 for one. Considering you can buy a Venture for that price.
    Meter is reading 11.6v DC/30v AC on running vehicle. Battery has intermittent drainage which has been going on for about a year. All because of AC voltage flowing past rectifier diodes. I have the same poor design as the unit on the left.

    • @markfothebeast
      @markfothebeast 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mattfoxlikesretro Yep! And guess what? I just replaced the damn alternator AGAIN about 8 months ago. That's my fault because I put in a junkyard one. They are much more affordable today than they were 3 years ago. I think I paid like $80 + core charge on RockAuto.com.

    • @markfothebeast

      I've also gone through and fixed multiple wiring faults underneath the carpet and floor. If you're having interior electrical problems, fuel pump/fuel gauge issues, or cooling fans not kicking on, I can tell you how to fix all that. I made multiple videos on it but never uploaded them.

    • @mattfoxlikesretro
      @mattfoxlikesretro 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@markfothebeast Yup, and yup! I've also got an intermittent problem with the running light fuse blowing, sometimes it takes a week to blow, sometimes it blows 6 times in a day! I haven't had the time or money to really do any digging yet, but it's in the works. It's at 325,000 miles right now, trying to see if I can get it to 500,000 before a wiring problem burns it to the ground lol

    • @markfothebeast
      @markfothebeast 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mattfoxlikesretro Pull off the plastic door jamb covers on both the driver and passengers side. Dig in to the wiring harnesses on both sides under the carpet by the front seats. Get ready to pull out a soldering iron. There's multiple junctions where 3 wires are soldered together. They are probably all corroded.
      I'm not 100% sure on the lights but I do know that others had issues with rear tail lights. This and running light wiring may be on the plugin that goes to the fuel pump and fuel sender. It's literally 10" behind the drivers seat under the carpet. The other end is accessible and can be unplugged from under the van.
      I cut slits in the carpet to get to this. My van literally died in the middle of the road and once I wiggled the plugin it started back up. I eliminated the entire plugin by marking and soldering the wires directly together. It was corroded to hell inside.

    Im trying to replace the voltage regulator on an AD alternator. The regulator has a large contact in the form of a ring that goes under the metal space and the main voltage output. I cannot move the large metal cylinder - how does one remove it. Its absolutely solid and wont turn using grips after soaking in penetrating oil.

    Sure it's easier to buy a brand new car every time you have trouble but not everyone can afford a new car all the time. Some people need to save the money or they don't trust mechanics or rebuilt alternators. This gives people more knowledge to understand what is going on. You said it all when you said your vehicle is a $ vacuum. When you fix your own vehicle your making per hour what your mechanic charges. My neighbor has a garage & charges $65.00 per hour, I know some charge more.

    I checked the diodes...multimeter test with positive on casing and negative on battery post, and it passed(.536) reading. So I did your bench test connected to battery and running off an electric motor. I touched the positive jumper to the brush positive and it made that ugly sound! How does it test ok for diodes and bad on the bridge rectifier when all a rectifier is is diodes connected together in a circuit? If the diodes are good, shouldn't the rectifier be good? Curious. Thx

    Hi Alternatorman. I have a 2002 duramax that recently had an voltage regulator
    fail in the alternator. I was in a pinch and needed my truck so I bought
    a replacement from orieleys. I purchased the Ultima New option 105 amp
    version. The replacement was straight forward as expected. This was on a
    friday. Fast forward to sunday and less than 100 miles later the
    battery light came on again.
    I have not checked it yet but I assume the regulator failed again. Is
    there something in particular that would cause the regulator to fail or
    did I just get a defective unit? Thanks for any and all advice.

      Test for AC voltage. A failing diode in the rectifier will allow AC to pass causing intermittent battery failure/drainage.

      Funny thing is most alternators are made by bosch or denso. So congrats on using a german designed or Japanese (denso) alternator on your american car :P
      Right on the money animalcorvair weak or dead batteries kill alternators. The alternator is meant to run the car accessories and keep the battery charged, not charge a battery from a deep cycle or constantly keep getting strained trying to force a battery to hold a charge. Chargers are meant to charge deeply discharged batteries :)
