Do You Need To Watch Every Movie In Your Collection?

  • My physical media collection is different than yours. I have 700+ movies in my collection and I haven't watched all of them, I probably never will. And that's alright. Everyone keeps telling us that we should feel bad for that, and it's not true. Some people collect differently than others.

Well said! Physical Media is a great way to fight censorship

Got loads of blu-rays etc that I will probably never get around to see, especially if they are of a TV series of 100+ episodes, just not going to see them all (especially if I saw them first time around). Don't feel bad about it, same with not reading each and every book or comic or listening to each and every song on the CDs

I've collected all my life, starting with VHS, then DVD, onto Bluray and now 4k. I love the hunt almost as much as watching the film! The overall experience is so much better than streaming! I've introduced my daughter to so many films that aren't on streaming!

Good collection. Gave mine up decades ago. I found I never watch any movie more than twice maybe. The physical space to store it all is insane. Streaming has been a godsend for my use case. Also got tired of repurchasing the same movie but in the latest new format. Just a thought. Cheers.

I can understand that, I’m never gonna fault someone for wanting to save space.

My original DVD collection? like 200-300 strong and I have watched just about every one of them, the new additions maybe 100 or so, I've watched a good bit of them, my Blu-rays, some of them, I've at least seen most of the movies in my library in some form or another.

People don't understand that films like the french connection are a product of their time and it should not be censored because some very small minority got offended by a racial slur

I just watch you video and new to collection Blu-ray only. I only collect Blu-ray that I would watch or my family would enjoyed. I will subscribe as I found your video interesting.

My collection is only slightly larger than yours, at about 1100 films. I do have a few dozen discs I've never watched, but for me, since I don't do a ton of blind buying, I've already seen the films themselves, previously, for the most part. If I have maybe 40-50 unwatched discs, I've never seen the actual films themselves for maybe, 15-20 of those. I do wish I had more of a backlog but I have a limited budget for media so I really only get maybe 24-40 new discs per year, sometimes a bit more, and my primary focus when I go to watch something is usually the unwatched stuff. I don't really get the people with 10k+ discs, or hell anything over 3-4k, especially if they're in their 40s/50s, I get people have been collecting for longer than us, but I feel like once you cross over the 3500ish threshold the average number of times you've watched each film goes drastically down and there could be hundreds if not thousands you never get to. I have no intention to grow to 5k+, but there are many films I still don't have, I feel like my collection may peak at around 3500-4k films but I won't hit that for like 15-20+ years, it's good to have some empty shelves and room to grow.

What other people do with their collections is not my business, but I've been much more intentional about watching what I have. My collection is more about curating than quantity. The only unseen movies I have are things that I'm excited to check out based on trailers or reviews. So with a collection of 300 movies my goal is to see everything in my collection. (And only own movies that I love).
But no, you shouldn't feel bad.

Great PSA on physical media! I have about the same amount as you. I haven’t watched them all yet either.

I've watched mine. I've got 350-400 movies and few TV series. I just don't buy new films too often. Not before I 've watched what I have. Otherwise you'll easily end up with just clutter.
I guess a lot of people have started to realize that too because minimalist take of collecting (not just movies) and decluttering has took off on TH-cam. People have realized that they don't need to own everything they've amassed.

Well no you should not feel bad. Though I have around 2k and only maybe 40 I have not gotten to yet. They do NOT go on my shelf until I watch them , they are in a pile by my player until I do. I do this for one big reason. Even new I have run into bad discs. I want to make sure a bad disc is not in my collection. I end up thininking I own it and low and behold nope. I just picked up a blu ray of The Collector and it would not play in any of my players except one and it skipped in that one. Nothing wrong with the disc it is just a dud. I do try to get my pile of shame down before buying more but it is always at least a pile of maybe 20. But also if I did not love it I kinda want to weed it out again asap.

Sometimes you have to be in the mood. You can buy something you know you’ll be in the mood for later even if you aren’t right now. I like to watch everything I buy before I shelf it but I have a few new purchases of old favourites that I’m just not in the mood to rewatch right now

every time I watch a movie I buy 2 more to replace them :)
I'm not a fan of being at the mercy streaming services paying for something I'll never own and like other people have said not everything is available on streaming

Don’t get me started on that whenever the Steam Summer Sale rolls around… The Steam Deck only made it worse.
