I was born at the old Beckley hospital but now live in Mount Hope. When I was growing up in the 1960s all the shopping was in uptown Beckley. This was before the malls came in. It should be added that former West Virginia Governor and Mount Hope Lions Club member Okey Patteson was instrumental in the building of the West Virginia Turnpike in the 1950s.
Thanks! I was born in Beckley, and I love and am proud of my birthplace and my Raleigh county heritage. Seriously though, I don't think Robert Byrd was a treasure at all. He was actually one of the founding fathers of what we would now call 'the DC Swamp'. Just my honest opinion of the man..
My grandfather survived the 1914 Eccles No, 5 Mine Disaster in April 28, 2914. My grandfather was barricaded and trapped in the No. 5 Mine for 3 days. About 1 year later, he would later be in the Layland No. Mine Disaster on March 3, 2915.
My great grandfather Cooper died in one of those mines when my grandmother was 3. They were in Ameagle. He’s buried in the family cemetery in Winifred. It’s across RR tracks on the side of a mountain. My dad said my grandmother didn’t understand- when all the miners were walking back into the coal camp she called all of them daddy because their faces were black w coal dust so she couldn’t distinguish who was who.
