I wasn't a Bruno Mars fan when he first came out.
But the kid grows by leaps and bounds every time he releases something new, and his unparalleled ability to collaborate makes him the best dude out there.

My son is an exceptionally talented southern rock guitarist, singer, and song writer…and he’s always vexed because what he wants to play sounds like his influences….I keep trying to tell him that there’s only so many notes! I’ve sent him his video to help him understand. It’s not theft when one is appreciative of one’s icons, yet producing something new.

To understand Bruno’s musical background is to know his family’s musical history. His uncles had a band that performed nightly vaudevilles in Waikiki impersonating all the Motown and Pop artists from the 50s through the 90’s. Bruno grew up, lived and breathe these musical theories. He’s been able to “scary pocket” music his entire life.
Yes Yes....Little Bruno would come into 'Trappers' at the Hyatt and Azure would let him perform on her stage. GREAT TIMES.

Hearing you guys talk about not remembering the verses really demonstrates the inherent difference between composers and lyricists. I know you were talking about the melodic line, but the lyrics (which stuck in my head immediately) fit to that. Lyrically, the verses function in the same way you're talking about with the instrumentation, they clearly reference Motown and funk (sometimes very directly), but they break it up with modern word choice, idiom, and a postmodern self-awareness.
I think it's best exemplified in second verse: The first couple lines _Got your hair in the wind and your skin glistenin' / I can smell your sweet perfume_ wouldn't be out of place in a Marvin Gaye song (and Bruno really leans into it in his vocal timbre), then _Mmm, you smell better than a barbecue_ Bruno and Anderson are winking at the listener (not even Bruno Mars could get away with saying that to a person in real life). They're saying: "yes, most of the lyrics of this song are cliche and a bit silly, and we all know it, but sometimes things are cliche because they just feel *right* ", then they hammer that home by referencing Earth, Wind, and Fire's Shining Star _Oh, superstar is what you are_ (a song whose verses are literal cliches) before settling back into the more traditional _I'm your biggest fan

Gamble and Huff are probably so proud of these two guys. With “Leave The Door Open” and “Skate”, you can hear everything that made the Philly Soul and Motown sounds so great back in the day. The deceptively difficult balance between simple and fun lyrics that reflected popular phrases and trends with beautiful chords/instruments/strings underneath those vocals and their melodies is everything Gamble and Huff helped to popularize in the 70’s. Silk Sonic knows their history, and we’re so lucky to be experiencing this in real-time.

Anderson and Bruno were the best thing to happen this year. Hands down.
These Two musicians are so well rounded and talented, they can do it all , and are so cool and comfortablly relaxed, you can see and feel true confidence and pleasure they are surrounding their audience with. Love them so much.
the whole subculture of skating rink in the community is where this feel comes from. There is a vibe and a groove that works perfectly with being on 8 wheels and grooving to the perfect track... so cool.
This channel is making musical concepts so much more manageable than 2 semesters of a Music Theory course. Thank you guys for making music theory fun
What another great breakdown of such an amazing song. Bruno and .Paak are just killing it right now and y'all hit on the key element... this song just makes you feel good. Such a pleasure to watch you guys completely nerd out and have as much fun discusing this, as I imagine Silk Sonic (Thank you Bootsy Collins!) had in creating this little piece of magic.
Releasing a song at a time w/o an LP is an interesting marketing choice.
That seems to be the standard approach nowadays. Maintaining engagement with an audience over time and maximising attention on all the songs. Rather than working on an album for 2 years, and only having it be talked about for a week then immediately being forgotten about.

You guys are just awesome! First, I had no idea "Leave the Door Open" was filmed in that studio! I didn't catch that! I am 64 years old and when I first heard "Skate" and "Leave the Door Open" I was so excited! I haven't heard anything even remotely so smooth and R&B since the 70's! Every time I listen to these two new songs, I am instantly young again and getting ready to go to the club for the evening! Fun! I literally cannot wait for their new album to come out. But I enjoy this reaction you guys do - and always look forward to a new one. Today you each listed such great ideas for music you were listening to, that I was frantically searching for a pen to write it down! I'm going to check them out. Great commentary, guys! Thank You! (P.S. Been hoping to see an episode here with MonoNeon. You guys - Scary Pockets - has really turned me onto his music! He is incredible!)

After hearing that the concept they went with was "what if we were in the middle of a roller rink?", it totally clicked that this song is for dancers. That's why the melody is not as important or memorable - dancers are here for hot rhythms.

The next single from Silk Sonic is on it’s way. Friday, 5th November ‘Smokin out the Window’, then the album on the following Friday 12th November. Great reaction🐨👏🏼🛼🔥Award season is going to be great… they better Leave the Door Open, Silk Sonic is going to Skate right up. Takes me back to a place that I love, but is so fresh, so current. This is such a great series. Entertaining and educational ...and love hearing your respective takes on song structure, harmonies and arrangement. Good stuff!
Bruno Mars is an expert at extracting tones and timbres from 70's soul songs. Without a doubt he remixes them and makes them his. Sounds so great. Some Barry White orchestration and some MFSB ft The Three Degrees TSOP The Sound Of Philadelphia Vibes as well. Anderson Paak on vocals and drums is so delicious and I think Bruno not only brings out the best in him but has himself taken his style to a whole new level on his flow, feel and vocals.
Nothing becomes yours by remixing.
"Substance" is the right word. I like Rick Beato's distinction between high-information and low-information music. Doesn't matter the genre. This high-information music!

Silksonic is a fantastic project and their music is wonderful. The music got a lukewarm reception here in the UK, barely scrapping the Top 20. The sound is far more 70s Philly Soul than Motown!

It's just so amazing how many influences you can hear at any moment, yet they also add a very modern vibe with the story, the lyrics and maybe the production style too. Ive been a huge fan of bruno mars. He is my childhood, i don’t remember a time where he wasn’t my favourite and i saved up FOREVER to get front row floor seats as a VIP member in his 24k Magic album and definitely don’t regret it. His dancing, his acting and humour, HIS SEXY FACE (sorry), his music and the ability he has to adapt and change every single release while still having that “hey is that bruno mars?” Energy is just immeasurably hard to compete with.
I still prefer his older music but hes just so good bro so good
