    That poor girl. Man, she just wanted to fix Liz's phone, having a small chit-chat and go about the rest of her day. She didn't expect to be hit with a strange conversation that would make her feel worthless and distract her while she was trying to do her job. Now she'll be super insecure about her skills.

    I love how they chose an actress with similar features to Holmes to play the Apple Genius girl. It shows how both characters are a mirror image of one another. By talking down to the girl, Holmes is projecting her own frustrations and anxieties about where her life is headed. Though she is condescending toward the girl about having no aim, Holmes is just as stranded as her.

      😱 really good point

    • @RenM908
      @RenM908 2 ปีที่แล้ว +99

      But weirdly, I don’t think she necessarily meant to talk down to her in that moment. I think she was trying to express that it must be nice not having any dreams or expectations because if “do well in life”, that’s amazing. You’ve done it! However, if you didn’t, well, you didnt have any plans or goals in place so what were you expecting? There shouldn’t be any added pressure to meet a goal. You’re free to do what you want. Also success becomes rather vague in this sense now which can be good or bad. Are you happy? Can you feed, cloth yourself, take care of basic needs but may be not society’s idea of “success”? Well you technically could still be successful. But for those who constantly have an idea of what success should be for them at least and have an end goal, especially type A people, that can be daunting. I feel like she was just stream of consciousness more than actually having a conversation.
      Sorry for the long winded paragraph

      Amanda Sygfried is studying intently - the Apple Guru's dialogue and breakdown word-for-word, inflection-for-inflection is repeated by her later in a board room meeting where she is under attack and wants to show she was vulnerable. This indicatively demonstrates the divorce of reality is such that even emotional outbursts are acts. If one is embroiled in lies for too long, one forgets how to show emotion.

    Am I the only one here thinking that Holmes didn't actually mean it as an insult? It may sound like it but it might also just be her awkward and socially inept self being genuine. It really seemed to me like she was honestly fascinated and marveled at the simple concept that a person could be just that, a person, with no precise ambition or dream, just going with the flow. Unlike her who's haunted by the fear of never accomplishing anything important in her life, prisonner of her own mind. This is the very opposite of the American mindset which is to be evermore productive, hence why she can't quite grasp the notion I think.

What if your dream ends up trapping you - like E seems to be like in this scene through exhaustion. This is what defending your dream and your ideas of ambition really looks like. I think the last two bits just show how E finds it so tough to comprehend the other person's feelings regarding a failure like this.

    I don’t think Elizabeth was deliberately trying to be mean or belittle the girl in this scene. Some people are just very ambitious in life, they have a clear vision for what they want, and sometimes it can be a curse. These types of people have trouble turning off that level of ambition and determination. It can become very stressful and can cause needless suffering because of it. These idealistic people live their lives in the future.
    Someone with little or no goals in life can just chill and live life moment to moment. They usually set small goals and if they don’t succeed it doesn’t really matter too much, it’s not a big deal to them. They just move on to the next thing and go with the flow. That’s why the Apple girl was thrown off with that “deep” question of “what was your dream as a child?”

      The problem is not so much that Elizabeth was ambitious but that she was arrogant and made demeaning claims he could not prove. She “told” the girl that nothing she would do would matter (how does she know this?) simply because she doesn’t have what Elizabeth can perceive to be ambition (the girl could be ambitious in a different way than Elizabeth, and how is Elizabeth so confident that doing something that “matters” requires “ambition”?). It shows Elizabeth’s narcissism perfectly that she made such a strong claim against someone she doesn’t know without realizing the limits of her own perspective or the emotional impact of her words on the other person. The conversation was not merely a misunderstanding, it was antisocial behavior.

    • @Kwelar
      @Kwelar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@LordAus123 I don’t think she was being arrogant. She wasn’t trying to demean the Apple girl, she was trying to tell her that there’s no reason to be scared of not having any dreams. If you’re a person who doesn’t have dreams or have clear life goals, then you can basically choose whatever path you want in life. And if whatever you choose doesn’t work out, it won’t really matter or even hurt you that bad. It won’t matter because you weren’t really invested in that path, so it’s not as meaningful.
      When you become really invested in a goal or vision that you believe is very meaningful, it becomes your entire life. If your dream fails, you fail. Now that is scary.
      The irony of this scene is that the Apple girl started freaking out and crying over losing the data on the phone, something that doesn’t or shouldn’t have really mattered too much to her. The worst that could happen is she gets fired from a job she regarded as temporary anyways.
