Something I really enjoy about these videos that I think doesn't get recognized enough is the speed at which you go through them. We don't have to wait through 90 seconds of someone going, "whats up guys, welcome back to the show" before they actually get to the content. Workphlo is practically already into the tutorial from the first second, snapping shots and moving lights as he intros the show. It's a really great detail in the presentation that I think a lot of channels could learn from.
As far as future projects, what about challenging yourself with something you've never worked with before and explain your thinking process as you tackle it, what issues to you foresee, how you deal with unexpected surprises, things like that.

Thanks Dustin! I have one suggestion for a video: maybe you could do one without the strip box? Just with some continuous lighting and a white backdrop. You have a good style for doing videos that hold one's attention. Simple enough to understand and show the slight mistakes that we all make.You mention post work (composites) often. Any chance of showing us some of it? I know you do photography, not software videos, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Also, am always curious as to equipment used (what brand/kind of trigger system for lights, lens, and settings. Keep making these videos.

Hi, thanks for making the vid, as I said of other vids, these are ideas we can do at home without large studios, models or expensive gear. Glad you will be 'churning them out like a factory' would good to see the PS side of things (slowly) so we can follow along at home, step by step flipping the image for symmetry and creating fade at the bottom.

Hi Dustin, great content again. Can you explain how you use a strip box behind a bottle, for example, to make a selection/path, and how you implement it when doing a composite? I'm from a different photography genre, but looking to get more into product photography. Compositing in Photoshop is very new to me and I don't really understand how to combine multiple images. Perhaps my request is a little too basic for your channel, but I thought I'd ask anyway. Thanks again.

Cheers. For labels, I would suggest shooting a clean/new version of the product so the type is clear and needs minimal retouching. You can always use local adjustments like selective colour etc. to emphasize type, and selecting the type is always an option as well (to perform adjustments).
Some people even match fonts and digitally add the type on certain elements to give a computer-render level of perfection.

Love your tutorial man. Recently o had to shoot wine bottles and jars on white backdrop. Lot of items. I wanted to avoid composite but i couldn't get a defined side lines cause the white backdrop reflected into the glass I couldn't use black flags. Shadows were also very evident. It was a nightmare

If your camera supports showing LiveView on a smartphone or tablet via WiFi (like the Pentax K-1), try taking the smartphone/tablet with you while you adjust the softbox. Only works if the softbox has a modelling light, though.

Very well done video. Clean and professional approach! I was wondering what a back flash was or if I could just use a bower SFD740 shoe mount flash? I'm really new to this so I don't know anything about how to use the flash. What settings /angle would I need?
You need decent surface area to nuke white, so if your flash isn't working just shoot it into a piece of tracing paper or white fabric to diffuse the area!

How do you achieve such crisp black edges as seen on 7:10 ? Adding black card does not seem to add any edge as black as that one. Great showcase by the way. Thanks for sharing.
Hey Willy! We just used a curves layer in photshop I believe (few years back) to make the dark grey edge pretty much black. Might have went a bit overboard in hindsight actually! I'm meaning to make an updated episode on Black + White glassware schemes. Stay tuned and thanks for watching / commenting.
I like your videos so far. Two things: 1. Why would you use this lighting over another for a particular purpose beyond just looking cool and simplicity? 2. Question about the edge reflection created from the edge of the stripbox... what is going on with the edge of the cup part of the glass (not a solid edge darkness like the stem of the glass)? I was seeing this last night in a practice session and realized I had a lot of ambient light going on that was being reflected onto the edge of the glass. Used 1 LED. But I was curious what was happening on yours with the speedlights.
I use this strip because the width was ideal, but in general yes it's just the shadow area rendering the 'dark' parts of the glass so it's just a matter of finding the right balance.

They may require a frontal light to get the accents as you describe, if they can not be backlit - like translucent items.

I have a standard piece of paper sized sheet that works well! I'd advise larger if it is available to you though!

Great video, how would you approach an etched glass? Would the same technique work? Or would the back light blow out the etching?
Ray MacDonald Great question, I've never tried an etched glass but I suspect the etch might redirect the light such that it is defined nicely with black edges, after a bit of tweaking! Plus when you're on #ffffff white you can shoot an additional expoure where the light flatters the etch, and mask it in easily.
Dustin you talk about a non post-heavy method for the top rim coming in the upcoming weeks but i couldn't find it 4 years+ after. Did i missed something?

@@workphlo I don't think that the perfect white background can be achieved without losing the center of the rim. You can place the flags anywhere but that spot is purely backlit with 0 angle, not a reflection/rifraction. Of course i mean "without open PS"

Is the light on the softbox off or on when taking a pic? Looks off? Is just the flash from the Camera lighting it all up?
No it's just the stripbox. It just goes off in a 1/100,000 of a second
Will this work for glasses with etching on them?
Would this still be possible without a flash? All I have are two soft boxes and the on-board flash

P9 Gamer Kit lens, ISO 100, f13 would be my ideal settings, contingent on enough backlight power.

Use it! It'll work fine with some adjusting
What if you don't have two of the object you need to photograph? What if you don't have a strip box?
Then perhaps flip the reflection in photoshop, and photograph a light pointed at a white wall as the background. Cheers!
