This is easily the most informative video for a beginner to fish in Hawaii. Great job
Mahalo!
Cheeeehoooooo!!! Mahalo.
Dooosh🤙💙
Moving to Hilo in a month for 4 months! I am so glad I found your page. Amazing content. I’m from the Midwest and have grown up using completely different rigs. Can’t wait to drop a line off the big island.
Mahalo
Probably the most liked comment on our fishing channel of all time 🤙🎣💪
to improve your rig, put a small bead in between the lead and barrel swivel so that when the lead bounces on the swivel it doesn't damage it
Mahalo brah I live down kawaihae side and this rig is definitely the best I’ve tried so far
Tight lines fellas! Thank you for excellent video
You guys are legends. This is the most informative video I’ve found. Thanks
Yessah my bradda 🍻
Your a legend for having the name owen
Been watching your video for years, moved here, Hawaii Big Island 4 years ago use your rigs always, Mahalo
Excellent video guys. It's the little things that make all the difference. You covered the details really well.
Mahalo nui loa! Good to hear, we were hoping to get everything down that someone might need to know.
Just moved to Hawaii and this video was great. Going to try these out on Friday.
Please teach to convert to non Lead sinkers. It is a good thing & Colorado
is now phasing them out. Also painted adds flash to your rig !
Good info & thanks.
Great video guys, I am from Florida and I see the locals using those rings. I really appreciate your time to do this tips on how to dyi. Great stuff 😊
Yes worked very well for me when I was living in Florida aswell caught lots of black drum snapper Spanish mackerel and jacks on the whip rig Mahalo 💪👍❤️
Thanks bro! It is sick to hear feedback like this. Danny was over there last year crushing with this setup.
excellent. I am coming from Yorkshire in northern England to Oahu in October hoping to try out spinning from the beach. thank you for producing this video, Mahalo
@kaio james thanks i will try to remember i was gonna bring my gear from England but the airline costs way more than buying a setuo at Walmart. I can't wait to try.
So informative! Thank you so much!
Have you ever tried a palmer knot? Give it a try I believe it’s a bit stronger then the fisherman knot and a bit easier to tie…..also great job on the video !
chee, i already had an idea of how to fish since little kid days but now knowing how to setup my own stuff helps a ton thanks braddahs, most simple straight to the point tutorial
Awesome! That is exactly what we were trying to do with the video glad it worked out and was helpful! About to drop the next one! ;D
Good job guys! Good info simple and easy remember!
Great video. What lb line is best on the reel and leader?
My two go to setups, but nice to know what # line you use and size hooks etc. moved to Waimea from kohala over a year ago and barely go fishing anymore. Ocean is too far and I dont have any fishing partners. Once we turned 19ish my friends changed there hobby to drinking instead of fishing.
Just got back from a Maui vacation last week. I watched this video before we went, and it totally paid off. Got a nice papio whipping from the shore in Kihei! Thanks for the info. You guys are awesome! Mahalo!
kmizutani7 thats awesome make sure to #shakafishing with your fishing pictures!
SUPER HELPFUL VIDEO! please make some more Tips on fishing in Hawaii. Aloha 🤙🏽
Mahalos for the videos! I decided a few days ago that I wanted to start fishing and came upon your guys videos. I set up a cheap whipping rig and 4 days later I caught my first omilu around 11inches! Super stoked on my first catch! Mahalo guys, love the solid advice and good vibes! Chee!
Awesome stuff bradda thanks for sharing your story. (:
Way awesome info. Visiting Kauai this week and gonna try these. Can u show the light that you use on the bobber? Link would be good to. Thanks guys
That will work. Look for the lights to put on your bobber so you can keep track of it in the water at night
have been shopping for fishing rigs to bring with me to hawaii when i move there with my son and this video has helped alot... thank you
+Taraz Pariseau check out hifishgear.com they have the load of solid gear, got the promo code Shaka5 going ATM for a discount on anything you get too ;D.

Beginner fisherman, appreciate the video.
aloha bro, just came across your videos.. just wondering what size hooks to use for whipping?
Thanks for this! My 7 year old has been asking me to bring him fishing and I have no idea what I'm doing as far as setting up rigs. This video has been the most helpful so far. Now I just gotta find shore/pier spots on Oahu safe him & I.
You guys are awesome. Funny and you do such a good job explaining it and describing why you do stuff. Really appreciate it🤙🤙
Howzit guys interested in da menpachi so u folks used shrimp as bait and floatet rig.
Hope you catch some nice ones 🎣
Thanks for the video! Helped me catch tons of fish on my trip visiting!
Appreciate all the tips and tutorials you shared 👍
Awesome video! I'm gonna show it to my boyz. They are just learning how to tie their own rigs. They will love this. Mahalo
Sounds great!
Excellent video! Loved the detailed description that you guys do. Can’t wait to get out and try a whipping rig of my own. Thank you!
Ey howzit! My papa fished every day and hes gone now and I been trying to figure out how to carry on his legacy w all of his poles and tackle I inherited

Dude awesome mahalo for sharing! Hope you hook up man, be sure to let me know how it goes! If you get any questions let us know!
Brah DID UM @@ShakaFishing
Went Kihei side and caught a small kumu. Threw him back since was like 4 inches but was real nice to finally get out and do it. Had choke fun. TY again!
I am in the same boat!!!
Dude this is awesome to know. Huge mahalo for shareing @gekko pls
Thanks for this just caught my first Guam Trevally after watching your whipping rig setup!!
I'll be in Oahu in a week (October). Can you guys give me some tips for inshore fishing? What should I be targeting and what baits? Any general areas that are better than others in October?
Thank you very much. Great dudes to give us some tips! I will take my son with some greater results now!
That's what I'm talken aboot. Good job boyz. Have you ever tried a double hook set up? Tie in the first hook the tie in another liner at the bend of that hook say 18" and tie in another offering like a fly or another color grub on the bottom.
Danny has been trying something similar lately! Might try this method out myself though soon!
Thanks!! Been looking for exactly this sort of tutorial! I've been a fly fisherman for years on the mainland and feel clueless out here.
Yessssai another cherreh video, it was awesome and informative. Keep em coming. Ive noticed some growth in the channel yessai!
Mahalo! We are so stoked, it is picking up quicker then we expected tbh. Haha thanks for the continued support Braddah!
Do you ever pre make rigs and how would you store them without tangling? Thanks 🙏🏼
Yes I like to pre make rigs it saves a ton of time while your out fishing. A good thing to use is a chunk of cardboard you can wrap the line around the cardboard. There are a ton of videos out there on premade rigs. Goodluck
After you secure the rig to the cardboard I store them in separate ziplock bags to prevent tangles and moisture from getting to the cardboard rigs.
Thank u braddahs heading out tomorrow hopefully catch something if not all good 🤙🏾
Well done video, from a fellow fisherman in California going to maui for to weeks.....thanks!!!
Right on! Hope it helped out a bit, how was it?
Thanks so much for the detailed help guys. Mahalo
Wanted to ask, Kapono, how did you learn all the hawaiian names for fish? 🐠🐟 super impressive! I'm asking because I really wanna learn!! Help a sister out?
Thanks guys. I'm out here in NorCal. Going to Maui in a couple of weeks for vacay and needed tips for fishing out there. Great tips.
Mahalo! Got a few follow up episodes made too. ;D
Mahaloz! Was always tying the egg sinker on instead of letting it free.
Welcome braddah! I use to do that too, this way works way better though. :D
Thanks for the info. My son and I are Gonna try it out next week in Poipu. 🤙✌️
Did you use your regular line for the leader line?
In this video yes just to show how to rig it. But typically we use floro for leaders.
Great advice! I wish I had watched this video before losing two resin egg weights on Kona pier. Yeah don’t let your rigs sink to the bottom.
Those flash bombs are expensive lol
Thank you for this tutorial. Very detailed video ! Got a whipping pole for my birthday and didn't know how to set it up. Subscribing!
Mahalo for the support! Glad to have helped you out!
Awesome video guys. Just went and bought a casting setup last weekend, trying to get into fishing. Definitely going to get a similar setup to what you just showed in this video. Appreciate it all the info!
Right on! Do us a solid and snap your barbs and pick up any trash you might come across ;D

Mahalo nui loa! We will do just that! Thanks for the support.
Thanks. Gonna try that second floater rig!
Yea buddy! Let me know how it goes for you!
Great vids. I will be in Kauai in a couple weeks and now feel like I about half way know what to and what to expect. Good luck with your channel.
I'm going to be there next week and I'm gonna slay em' thanks to you guys.
Good luck!
Mahalo ;D
Nice, simple , can understand good job braddah🤙🤘
Simple and easy to follow, good video - thanks. I'm heading out to Oahu in a few months and like to fish the surf. The c-rig is similar to what we do here in So Cal, but use a 18"-24" leader. I'll need to try a longer leader and see if that works better. We also use the motor-oil grub.
Awesome brother. Motor oil slays thanks for watching
Thanks for all tips braddas! I'm from Washington state. I came down to Oahu to visit one of my best friends. He's not into fishing but I was interested in trying to figure out how to fish off the shore. I found your videos and took your advice. We went to a few beaches until we ended up at a rocky beach in Kailua. That's where we finally caught 2 good size papio and a few lizard fish. Needless to say when he felt fish on his pole he get instantly addicted to fishing. Thanks for spreading the aloha! Now we're on our way to visit family on big island. Looks like we gotta bring the poles with us. Mahalo braddas keep up the videos!
Sounds solid my braddah! We are glad you could learn from us! Do us a solid and snap those barbs ;D. What side you going to be on?
Nice and informative, good speaking with a lot of uh, ah, "like", or "actually". Had my gear stolen last year and just bought a new rig, going for smaller this time and try some whipping here in Ma'ili.
That sucks braddah :[ sad to hear people stealing the fishing gear...
great tips Braddahs, wish i knew this info before my last trip to HI. gonna put that knowledge to good use next time, hopefully slay more than one wrasse. keep up the great work!
Thanks my man! Cant wait for you to come visit! Try the Big Island, way more to do here ;D
Doooshhh!!! Sup ish
@@dannydhall5379 sup danny! back in HI?
Thanks for the knowledge!!! I'll be in Maui in 1 month.
RIght on hope it goes well!! What part?
Shaka Fishing Ka'anapali
Very good video! Well explained!🤘
Dan!!!!! Haha so awesome! I stumbled on ur video! Great video 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼. Miss u dude 🤗. Looks like you’re doing good!
Penny
Hey penny haha I just randomly checked this old vid (: hope your doing well! Are you still on oahu?
Thanks for the videos! Very informative. What would your ideal beginner whipping set up as far as rod and reel go. Somewhere in the middle/low side price wise.
Go to walmart and pick yourself up a 20-30$ rod and reel combo medium action not to big but not too small either 7ft medium action rod with a medium/small reel is my go too
Great info! Will test it out once I get there in a couple weeks :)
Let us know how it goes!
Hey I was wondering if you could use a mark white lure with the whipping set up ??
For sure! You got to balance out the weight of the lure to the lead though, if the lure gets to heavy it pulls the line too fast and ends up with the lead just holding it back.
Braddahs, thank you so much for making this video!! I've been looking for a vid just like this ever since I moved to Oahu. I did a lot of fresh water stream fishing and lake fishing when I lived in Cali(mostly for trout). But all that experience does me basically no good here, so it's cool to see the successful rigs in Hawaii, and be taught how to hook em up. Something tells me all that 2#, and 1# test line isn't going to do me any good here.🤓
Happy fishing!
Glad to have helped out! If you get a chance do me a solid and take the barbs off your hooks too ;D. Haha yea low pounds like that will be a real struggle to fish with here.
Lowest you should go out here is 6# even that is getting risky haha fish love to dive rocks like nobodys business out here!!! Good luck!
Right on Fellas! Thanks much!! And no need to worry about the barbs. I'm going out barbless!
Yee!
Awesome guys. going to Maui next week. my son is a quality fisherman. we are looking forward to hooking up on shore. any brands of grubs you prefer?
Is there a store on the island that sells flies like that? I know people say they're easy to make once you figure them out but I'd like to be able to buy some. Or maybe someone on the island sells them?
Super informative video! Thanks!
Awesome video guys! Just wondering if the floater you're using has the wire going through the body with the eye on each side..if it's the cheap Wal-Mart action then the screw eyes will pull out when a big fish bites or you get reef-snagged. The screw eye threads are shallow and can get ripped out easily. May I suggest instead to attach the floater to the snap and tie the leader to one end of the swivel and the leader to the other end of the swivel so that the burden of fighting the fish lies with the swivel and not the screw eyes in the floater...i haven't had any issues with line twists or anything. Thanks keep the vids coming!
Straight up that is great advise! Going to start implementing! Mahalo!
That is some great advice!👍 right on my bradda.
+Shaka po'opa'a this is super prime advice, 100% going to implement!
Aauurriigghhtt!! Lol
I live on the reef in Guam. I'd love to hear how you bros do your fish finding on the reef.
Came to Oahu over 20 years ago, went shopping for a new kit, got distracted, ended up working too much and forgot how to fish after discovering Starbucks. It's good to know my two favorite rigs are still useful, I say favorite because I've never learned anything else. Have you guys ever experimented with custom bait to enhance the lures you choose?
As always super helpful video man 👊 I lost it at 12:53 "You're blowin it" 😂😂 Gotta know how to put the line on the rod before anything else lol
+The GOAT Lmao! You know that!
Thank you for publishing! I fly fish a lot but want to try this rig set up as losing flies on the reef is getting pretty expensive. Only tip I can share back is when tying your knots, you may want to always wet them so they are lubricated and don't heat up when tying. This will lessen any breaks at the knots.
this helped so much, thanks guys.
Very welcome! Let us know how it works out!
No go to use bigger leader line? The 20lb wouldn’t work?
im new to fishing in hawaii this video help me alot can you also show us how to set up dunking rig if you can thaks
Thanks for letting us know! For sure man it is coming up soon ;D
Thank you sooo much for this video!
You are very welcome! Good luck on the water! DODOOSH
Is the bobber rig good for Surf fishing and ‘I suggest campania lures Brah. Get choke fish.
What's your opinion on using 2 splitshot leads instead of egg lead in the whipping rig?
Allen Lin nothing wrong with using two split shots. I use them when i rum out of egg leads but you dont cast as far with the split shots so i dont recommended using lures with splitshots use bait instead with a slow retrieve stay low to the bottom but try not to get stuck. 👍🐟
Shaka po'opa'a mahalos
would you recommend putting a bead in between the swivel and the egg wait
+Liam McFadden no need, never had the egg lead harm the knott from impact before.
+Liam McFadden if anything put a bead or two on tour leader to rest on the hook and give it a bit more color and eye look.
great video! very easy to follow,I will be in Oahu for first time last week of march,IS it possible i can meet and go fishing with you guys,
coming from southern California,
thanks!
I just moved to Pukalani. I’ve only fished a few times in my life. After watching your videos, I am going to go set up a whipping rig today and hope to catch some fish. I wish I had more people to fish with though, hard to learn all about saltwater shoreline fishing on your own
Question! Do you use braided line? I am having all kinds of wind knots...its killing me. I am thinking braid is not the way to go on Oahu.
Braid is not the way to go before you learn how to deal with wind nots and loop twists in your line which in opinion happens way more often with braid than mono. But braid is king and much more expensive so learn as you go but it also depends on what you're targeting anything from the shore besides ulua can be caught with 8-10 pound mono but get used to getting cutt off by gts in the 5 pound range super smart fighters good luck if you're plugging braid is good but the quicker you learn how to untangle wind nots the better off you'll be.
Here in SoCal we have something similar, pretty much we get something similar to a Hammerbomb than we attach maybe 5-6 feet of line then a fly at the end for Pacific Bonito. Do you think a small little grub at the end of the hammerbomb will work here in California ?
I bet that they would! You would be the first person over there to try it out I bet.
Mahalo! Exactly what I was looking for 🤙🏻
Thank you for such a helpful video. I am relatively new to fishing and when I went online, I saw a hundred different styles of bobbers( weighted bobbers, bobber stops, etc) but I can't seem to find these bobbers in your video. Can you tell me the name of them or provide a link so I can buy them? Mahalo !!!!
Check out walmart or any fishing store on the islands they should have your wooden bobbers
Can you guys make a video on the setup you use with live bait and a bobber
We sure can, thanks for the suggestion!
Shaka Fishing thank you I'm going to be staying at the Hilton wikoloa village on the big island for 10 days Christmas week do you know any good spots to fish around there
Right in-front of the Hilton along the water there works just fine tbh. Before you go out make sure to take a look at the legal size of the fish here - dlnr.hawaii.gov/dar/fishing/fishing-regulations/marine-fishes-and-vertebrates/.
Also do us a solid and clip off your barbs, and don't kill anything you do not plan on eating ;D
Shaka Fishing ya I go to Oahu a couple time a year to fish I just catch and release unless I get a big omilu or goat fish... maybe we can meet up one day and fish together if you are around
For sure we live right up the hill from there basically haha. Drop me a line when you know when you know your dates we goaaat.
you dont need 13ft rod to whip with 12ft leader...for halalu and akule i use a hmx 7 6 light action rod and 12 to 15 leader
Thank you so much for the help. I remembah fishin when I was small kid time in Hilo... goin' back to da island in July and showin my bf da island. I wanna show him how fish dere! :) Mahalos!
+Wendy Brown yea buddy! Glad to help out!!
Great video! Would these rigs work on the longer, larger poles? What can I do to send my bait out farther?
Mahalo! They would work on most poles that are lower on the power scale and lighter on the action. This video might be of help to you in the question th-cam.com/video/HsEZtpRLEPY/w-d-xo.html
you guys are right on!!
Mahalo nui loa for saying so ;D
I keep getting stuck on rocks with my dunking rigs, i lost 7 rigs a few sundays ago. Long hook line, short leader? Or am i doing something wrong?
You want the hook like short so that the lead is what is likely to get stuck. If it is super reefy you need enough lead line to allow the swivel to be above the rocks
Probably poopa'a grabbing your hook and running rocks hinalea will also run rocks... question.. are you holding your rod after you cast or are you putting it in a rod holder witch gives fish more time to run into rocks... especially in snaggy areas I try not to use pole holders. Also in Rocky areas I make my lead line 5 feet long sometimes..
Could you use a grub on the bobber rig?
Yea they work great like that.. even zip strips are prime on bobber.
These work awesome.Catch and release
How do u suggest putting on strips for whipping?
When using zip strips I would try my best to feed them in the hook aswell same as grub but if the strips are smaller just a hook on the end will do the trick 🤙
Someone find me the Staples button... "That was EASY"... Great informative video
Any tips on fishing in Maui... like best place to fish from shore... Heading there in the end of January...
Hey bro hope your trip on Maui will be a success. Don't know maui island that much but Google maps can help out a ton if your trying to find close enough spots to park and you can hike in pretty much anywhere there is a beach look for points to throw your lures out into deeper water but don't be afraid to throw a lure in shallow rough spots where ambush predators love to hide
