2006 Ford Crown Vic P71 Top Speed Run

  • This is a wide open throttle (WOT) of a 2006 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interpector P71. The only modification I have done is a Jmod to the transmission, otherwise it's bone stock. I was expecting a little more considering the other top speed videos of this car, but now I know its limitations and potential.

@OOM- 8018 I'm pretty sure it's a matter of tires: when you advertise a car that can go fast, it needs the tires to go with it.
For example: corvette and camaro has "z" rated tires that support high speed.
So it would have required that the car was equipped with a lot more expensive tires.

@@ESPLTD322 it's okay to talk about "toughness" but remembering that ATF fluid quality and temperature is paramount to an automatic gearbox, a gearbox with a high number of ratios and a converter that can lock quickly means less heat and less wasted energy. An old auto might seem tough but the lack of ratios mean advancing engine speed ahead of road speed a lot of the time and that is where the fluid will get hot and start to loose it's properties.

Had 24K geezer-miles on it. Still nearly perfect. Ignition cuts out ~100 MPH. With 2.73 gearing I can get 27 MPG all day and if you can go slower (I had to once for 500+ miles on a tank, long story) I get ~32+ MPG. This is freeway. That's what these barges are made for! Have you tuned out the speed governor, and what is the axle ratio of your CVPI? You appear to be hitting either the governor or the speed at which aerodynamic+road drag is equivalent to rear wheel HP. A lower axle ratio (higher numerically) would put you a few hundred RPM higher at the same speed. You have a few more ponies available closer to 5000 RPM. Mine is an X5 axle which is 3.27 LS. The 3.55 is rare, but good to find. It might cost you .2 mpg overall, but accel and top speed will go up ...
But only if you overcome the speed governor it came with. FORprog can be used for tuning out the governor (note that Ford put in that speed governor to protect your driveshaft from failing at speed).
Here is what infogalactic.com encyclopedia says about axle ratios:
The 2006-2011 Police Interceptors are equipped standard with an open 3.27:1 rear axle (Axle code Z5), with a trac loc 3.27:1 rear axle (Axle Code X5) optional, and are electronically limited to 140 mph (225 km/h) due to critical driveline speed limitations (the weight of the vehicle with law-enforcement equipment on-board makes it highly unlikely the vehicle could ever reach this figure). An optional 3.55:1 trac loc rear axle ratio with 120 mph speed limiter was also available (Axle code C6). Pre-2006 Police Interceptors equipped with the 3.27:1 rear axle ratio were generally limited to approximately 128 mph (206 km/h). This compares to the standard non-P71 2.73 rear axle ratio with a speed limitation of 110 mph (177 km/h) for all "civilian" Crown Victorias.[7]
Ford used an aluminum metal matrix composite driveshaft for the 1993-2005 Police Interceptors as a measure to allow safe operation at over 150 mph (241 km/h), but it was more expensive than the regular aluminum driveshafts. Ford CVPIs were governed to 129 miles per hour. Ford reintroduced a 3.55:1 rear axle ratio for the 2006 model year Police Interceptors with a 120 mph (193 km/h) speed limitation to reduce the risk of driveshaft failure. Ford built two different gear ratios for police use. One had the 3.27 gear ratio and was built for highway use, the second option had the 3:55 gear ratio and was built for city use. All CVPIs came standard with a 3.27.1 ratio open differential, however departments could order a 3.55.1 ratio locking differential for better acceleration off the line. Also noteworthy is that all cars came standard with an open differential unless Ford's Trac-Lok Differential was ordered with the car. Trac-Lok was available with the 3.27.1 ratio and came standard with the 3.55.1 ratio.

I'm not an expert on crown vics, they don't exist where I'm from but I'm guessing the engine would do a lot more and the transmission holds it back. looks like "4th gear" is the overdrive which is why it's then not going to be able to accelerate further on that because of how much torque is lost. If it had a 5 or 6 speed autobox it would probably get another 10 or 20 mph. Most "4 speed" automatics achieve their top speed in third.

It has the "JMod". It's a common modification done to the 4R70W transmission's valve body to firm up the laggy stock shifts. I did it to my Mark VIII, which has a transmission out of a '98 Grand Marquis, and it now chirps going from first to second gear at WOT. Google "JMod", there is tons of info on it.
