Sweet DT400! I have a 78 as well I picked up last fall, getting it into good shape for riding season soon. I’m curious about that moon key thing, this is the first I’ve heard of it. Where is that at on the bike?

It is called a wood ruff key. If you remove the ignition cover, it has a slot on the crankshaft, that is machined for it to fit into. Mine sheered because the previous owner did not torque the nut to spec.

@@legends-yamaha-enduroscom ahh gotcha. Is it the magneto nut that was maybe improperly torqued?

How fast can you cruise at with that thing?? Will it hold 60 pretty easy?

The stock rating from the factory was 85 MPH, it can hold 60 MPH no problem. Sprockets can also be changed out for street use.

What is the moon key? I built a dt400 from ebay parts and it runs like a ra.ed ape. If it stops I'd like to know where on the bike it's at.

The wood ruff key (half moon shape): If you remove the ignition cover, it has a slot on the crankshaft, that is machined for it to fit into. Mine sheered, because, the previous owner did not torque the nut to spec.

Have you done anything to it or is this stock? Looks likes it’s running great.

I will have to do an update video. I restored the bike and did a few sleeper mods.

There is a bike like this for sale near me looks rough like sat in the bush for years rough doesn't run and he wants 2500 that's obviously not a reasonable price but would it be worth it are parts hard to get for these just fishing for info before just whipping out cash and buying it

Does not sound like a great deal to me. I have 4 x 1978 DT400E’s and the highest I paid for one is $1200 that was running with a title.

Lool I paid $3500 CAD for a 1975 dt400 in good shape. I regret it though because I ended up fully cerakoting the engine, exhaust and a bunch of other things. Should’ve waited for a barn find but I just really wanted the 75.
