- In this video, I attempt to photograph Red Squirrels Jumping. This time, It's different; I'm working to a brief.
Last week, I visited Paula Fowlie's amazing Red Squirrel Hide in the Yorkshire Dales. This stunning location is a dream for wildlife photographers or anyone passionate about capturing animals in their natural habitat.
Paula invited me to the hide with a specific challenge: to photograph jumping squirrels against a man-made fabric backdrop, similar to what you'd find in a portrait studio. The idea was to recreate the feel of a studio shoot with these wild creatures.
🟨 Visit Paul's Hide: tinyurl.com/yc...
The challenge itself wasn't particularly difficult; Paul is more than capable of getting the perfect shot on his own. But I couldn't pass up the opportunity to spend a day at the hide. Absolutely not!
In the end, I really enjoyed the experience and was pleased with the images I captured. While these shots will never replace the beauty of a natural background, I still find them appealing.
I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Great video again and pictures, the squirrels are a joy to watch! I went the about 3 weeks ago directly as a result of your first visit, and was captivated by the beauty and magic of the place. It is a place well worth visiting and Paul is a great guy. I managed to get some beautiful shots into the bargain! Cheers for highlighting this place Gary :)
Gary another outstanding video well done you.
A truly fantastic video, a joy to watch, the smile muscles worked hard throughout! Many thanks!😀
Absolutely brilliant Gary.

Booked in on Sunday (has been arranged for a long time - postponed due to the wife’s cancer). Your lovely video has really wetted my appetite- super excited now!!
It is fun watching the squirrels --- every so often, i would take a picture 😂
I just love watching your videos. You have added more variety now, although I was quite happy with the landscapes as well. I have just started trying a bit of bird photography and I'm loving it. Some beautiful photos Gary.
Brilliant Gary ,what an experience 👌👌
Many thanks Lynne, Hope you're well? xx
Great video Gary with a few laughs along the way
Always a pleasure being at yours Paul. Until the next one, take care 👍👍
I was here in June this year, wonderful place, great guy, and a brilliant experience, good to be there again with you and with such memories
Fun episode. Some great images too

Thanks for putting a big smile on my face Gary. Brilliant as always.
Cheers :)
absolutely gorgeous video. So, I'm sure you enjoyed both setting up the session and shooting the camera
Great video as ever Gary. You asked…my personal opinion is I prefer the natural (green/brown) background compared to the artificial backdrop. Love the photos all the same👌🏻
Amazing shots!
Thank you 👍👍
Absolutely amazing! Thanks for taking me along!
Absolutely loved this, thanks for your great work
Cheers Stephen 👍👍
Wow. Great stuff love it. From a fellow Red Squirrel Photographer...
Cheers Gordon 👍👍
Fantastic centre. The squirrels here in Spain aren’t as red and we don’t have anything like that place. I loved watching it though.
Cheers 👍👍
Amazing photos and video..always good to see Gary's big smile enjoying and creating something new.
Very kind, thank you 👍👍
Adorable little critters beautifully captured Gary, on my bucket list for sure 🤞
Many thanks
No Red squirrels in Cornwall. Loads of Grey ones. I work for Cornwall Wildlife Trust and we have a project called Tor to Shore - bringing back rare species on the wetlands. I actually work on a reserve. If you want pictures of Beavers I could tell you where.
Absolutely loved this photo shoot and even though you said they were "studio" type images, I think they look amazing. It's not as if they posed on a chair for you - they are still natural.
I need it this video brilliant
Cheers 👍👍
Brilliant !
Cheers to those that can make a living from photography. Some of us use it to relieve stress and this looks like a lot of fun! Now I need to build a reflective pool. Great video!
Another great video and photos Gary, the squirrels are amazing to watch and be round
Cheers Lee m8 👍👍
Luv Paul's hides, great day out there last month. Your video brought back those memories. Great job Gary.
Thanks 👍

I appreciate that!
Gary you never disappoint wonderful sequences and first class images as usual .
Awesome. Fantastic. Nature at its best. You captured it perfectly..
Another great video Gary. I had David Attenburgh's voice in my head watching those squirrels....
As always, a cracking video and some great images. Brilliant.
Cheers Stuart 👍👍
Amazing to watch them jump!! Must admit prefer the more natural looking photos, particularly the stone wall!
Totally agree! Cheers 👍👍
Absolutely fantastic place and you got some stunning shot Gary 👌🏽
Cheers 👍👍
I think they all turned out great. Looks like you had a blast taking the photos.
What an amazing place. I'll definitely be paying a visit. Love the vide Gary.
Awesome video and images, Paul’s place is magical been twice myself. Every visit gives you something special.
Couldn't agree more!
❤ it Gary. Well done and thanks
Cheers 👍👍
Fabulous video, they are so adorable to watch and photograph, we were there for a couple of days two weeks ago. Weather was really bad but we still had an amazing time. Thanks for all the videos you are giving us so many new ideas for things to try out. I have always wanted to photograph red squirrels and we only found Pauls site because of your earlier video :).
Oh cool. Glad you enjoyed it too 👍👍
Great shots ! Really fun to watch, thanks!
Cheers 👍👍
Brilliant video and great photos as always, love the close ups but on the fence with the portrait shots.
Me too :) Cheers 👍👍
Some cracking photos and videos
Cheers John 👍👍
What an absolutely lovely video! Those squirrels are so tame! I've tried to photograph Red Squirrels in the Cairngorms, but nowhere near as close as this! Amazing! By the way, was that a Cuckoo I heard in the background? Haven't heard or seen one for years!
It certainly was m8 Cheers 👍👍
Lots of Cuckoos in the Cairngorms in May 2024
Very cool!🐿️
Cheers :)
Agree with the others, a magical place. Love squirrels! We don’t have them in Australia, except in zoos, so this video is extra-special. However, who has the noisy shutter button on their camera??? Doesn’t it have a ‘silent’ setting? Still, a lovely vid and beautiful images, Gary.
You gave me loads of verbals in a Glencoe workshop a couple of years ago for using Nikon Gear and now you are using a Nikon Z8. Interesting!!!!!!!!
😊😊 Nikon now sponsor my channel. What would you do? :)
Brilliant 🙂
Cheers Gary 👍👍
Gary man, that was wonderful. Many thanks for showing us this. You should come here to Stockholm if you want to see Red Squirrels and the archipelago is lovely too !
That sounded like an invite :)
Always welcome!
Great video. Paul's hides are wonderful. I was there last month. I would be grateful f you could tell me how you maintained focus during the slow motion video of the squirrels jumping. When I tried i the same thing last month I couldn't lock focus on. Many thanks
How did the Z8's AF work? And what sort of shutter speed did you use for the stills of the jumping squirrels?
1/2000 second shutter speed for the jumpers. The AF is ok. I'm still playing with various settings it's cool. 👍👍
We get loads of red squirrels here in France.. but nowhere near as tame as these ones. Are they very used to humans?
Gary, Did you get a little emotional at the end?
It was pretty cool. They're lovely animals 😊😊
Why are you not using "Auto Capture" on the Z8?
I’m a photographer. I’d rather be the one in control. 👍👍
should of just laid down on your back Gary.
I was more annoyed I couldn't get my damn app to connect. You're right though, that's obviously the best solution :)
