What I think should be done with your kids is either give them a fixed, small budget(5-6 grand) for their first car and allow them to do their own research or match whatever money they put in for a first car. This obviously involves some level of self sufficiency and good communication, but it makes sure the kids have respect for the vehicle and they’ve done their research about the car itself. Just offer them a bit of guidance like they have to get a pre purchase inspection by a mechanic and they have to look up online the common mechanical issues before they buy a car.

Why is the Mom on the hook for 5k if her son is still living with her and if he sells the car, no longer has payments for it or the insurance? If son can still get to work, or work from home, charge him a couple hundred at least a month to repay the loan.

So I'm a kid early 20, and my mom co-signed for my 15000 car, I currently work a job as good as my dad's (I can pay it off in a year and a half), and my mom is an accountant. The reason why I didn't go with a cheaper car was because I did buy a 3500 car when the price was high and it broke down on me in the middle of my work week (dead dead, three mechanical minded friendsall said so), we bought that new car on that weekend and it was the cheapest they had from a good dealership. Do you think I made the right choice, or how would you evaluate this situation? (I also sent the video to my mom so that she can think about it)

Funny, the first car my dad bought me when I was 20, and in college, was a $500 1976 Vega. I did not ding, crash, or ruin anything on it and drove it many many times across state from University to home 300 miles each way. I eventually got a job after college, and then bought a 1986 Nissan truck, with cash, and gave the vega to my brother's stepson. So to say young people will ding and crash cars is stereotyping teens and young people. Of course this was back in 1988. So maybe I fall into the not normal. 🤷‍♀ I do agree about not co-signing, especially something that expensive. My mom did co-sign something with one of my brothers, I don't believe that worked out well for my mom. Again though that was back in teh 80s, and my brother eventually grow up and made amends with mom. But she learned a lesson for sure.

The bank doesn't give money to anyone as you said. I don't want their money either. If I don't have the money then I don't buy simple as that. It doesn't mean I'm not trustworthy as stated in this video I just rather spend cash and have done so for 14yrs now . According to the banking world I'm not trustworthy but if that's the way they want to be oh well I'll just keep using cash and if that's not good enough then oh well don't need it

Terrible advice. He’s 21 and needs his own insurance. He’s making the payments. Mom said it herself that he has a good job. Make him get his own insurance and pay both car payments and insurance. It’s that simple

In some states, if your child live with you, their insurance is combined in one household. For him to get his own insurance, he has to move 20 miles from home. Under 25 has the highest car accident. I just learned this.
