It was a miracle that they even got Chris Morris to do the whole first series. He's more into the writing side than performing and doesn't often appear in other peoples work. He's a legend of UK comedy, especially among other comedians.

Chris Morris as Denholm was just too tied up with other things to do another full series. He is a writer, director, and actor. I don't think there were any problems other than a fully booked diary.
Matt Berry is a legend. He’s the most over the top human being in the world. Even if the audience didn’t know him by sight, he’s the voiceover actor on like half of our things!
Agreed! I love his voice. He did a number of mini 'guides' a few years ago for the BBC. Topics included Summer Holidays, Ghosts & Father's Day, plus some others. They may still be on the BBC iPlayer or on YT somewhere -x-

Matt Berry was previously known for Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, along with Richard Ayowade, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, while nowadays he’s on What we do in the shadows, also highly recommended.

and What We Do In The Shadows. - Frankly Matt Berry has a pretty good hit rate in any of the stuff he does. He's also a ridiculously talented musician as well.

Matt Berry (Douglas) was Graham's first choice for Denholm but ended up being busy with another project. Chris Morris (Denholm) did the first series as a favor to Graham Linehan with the understanding it could only be for the one series. Matt Berry was then available and the Douglas Reynholm character was created.
Matt Berry is the funniest, he can make a single word funny.

Douglas played by Matt Berry. He's in Brit comedies, Toast of London, Toast of Tinsel town, What We Do in the Shadows series.
I think it's fair to say that Matt Berry as Douglas brings a very different energy to the show than Chris Morris, but in no way bad - just different. It also allowed the writing to explore areas that wouldn't really have worked with Denholm. He was known before this - notably appearing in The Mighty Boosh with Noel Fielding, but the IT crowd definitely raised his profile and brought him to a more mainstream audience. He definitley has his own style, and has gone on to do a lot of work - now probably best known for the 'Toast of...' series.
I mean if he's best known for anything at this point it's What we do in the Shadows, by far the biggest reach a show he's been on has ever had.
Chis Morris ( the old boss ) was/is massively respected in the comedy world. "The day today and Brass eye " are two of the most perfect examples of satire to ever exist. He was just busy working on his own productions.
Both versions of the boss are great in their own way, but the new Matt Berry version is definitely used more as a plot point.
Toast of London starring Matt Berry is quality comedy. I would highly recommend watching it .
As others have said. Morris is a legend in the uk comedy world. I believe Graham Lineham adressed it in a commentary track for one of the episodes. Lineham struggled with the character and casting it and Morris took the role as a personal favour with the promise of it being a temporary solution and role.

Chris Morris was always supposed to be temporary as he's a writer and producer usually. Seeing him in regular TV is a bit like seeing George Lucas crop up in The Mandalorian. We were spoiled!

I think Chris Morris just left because he was too busy with other stuff. It was a bit of a coup him being a sitcom, as he was a bit of a comedy legend in the UK with his own shows and films. Matt Berry - the new boss - was a great replacement. He's always hilarious. He plays Beef in House of Fools (Vic and Bob's VERY bizarre sitcom which you ought to try and check out!)
I LOVE House of Fools! But if you don't 'get' Father Ted, then HoF is probably out of the question.

Chris Morris & Matt Berry are comedy geniuses. The Day Today, Brass Eye, Four Lions, Snuff Box, Toast of London etc.
You're gonna love Matt Berry, his role is absolutely mental. Other commenters have already mentioned why they killed off Denholm.
Matt Berry (Douglas) is fantastic - I'm sure you'll grow to love his "unique" style! Most recently, he's in the TV adaptation of What We Do In The Shadows, which is fantastic (and you should watch!). His replacing Chris Morris is nothing more than Morris having other filming commitments and not being able to commit to a full series 2, that's all.
I had the honour of watching this ep record at Pinewood Studios in the studio audience. Matt Berry was so incredibly nervous on the night in playing Douglas & messed his lines continuously all night. The truth is Matt Berry becomes a fantastic addition to the cast imo. I will always remember when Denholm died!! "Fatherrrr!"
You'll grow to love Matt Berry as Renholm. He's my favourite character by far 😂
It's well worth looking at Chris Morris stuff even if it's getting a bit old now.
But my favourite of his is his 2010 film Four Lions - it's brilliant, thoughtful and funny.

The new guy is Matt Berry, and you'll see a lot more of him. He's in a LOT of excellent sitcoms including the brilliant TV show version of What We Do In The Shadows. It's probably the best current sitcom.

Chris Morris was the director of the genius Four Lions movie. If you haven't seen it, it is a must see.
Chris Morris (denham) does milliona of things, he's a very busy man, the fact he even had time to do one season is remarkable, he's a comedy legend in Britain, got his fingers in every pie.
Then you have Matt berry, Denhams son another comedy legend. They picked the cast well for the IT crowd.

Imho Matt Berry brings IT crowd to another level, the upcoming stories just get wilder and crazier and I love it, only the unique comedy gifts of Matt could pull this character off, there's just so much more to the Douglas character than Denholm's , a definite improvement in my book.
Chris Morris did the first series as a favour to Graham Linehan more or less, never intended to immerse himself in the role for life... I think having him leave in ep 2 of the second series was the best time to do it, completely unexpected... made the most of his departure. And in Matt Berry they had possibly the best person to fill the gap.
Chris Morris has a large red birthmark almost completely covering the left side of his face and neck, which he disguises with makeup when acting. I thought I read somewhere that this contributed to him not continuing with the role as he feels more comfortable behind the camera. I could be wrong.

I think you would love the dry humor of What We Do in the Shadows; please consider when you are looking for a new show to cover. It's my favorite Matt Berry role. And just like the IT Club, it really gets rolling in season 2.

This show will be a great introduction to Matt Berry for you. Aside from the shows other people have already mentioned, he's a voiceover artist and musician who once released an album of covers of the theme tunes from popular British TV shows. He's quite an eccentric guy, and is married to (or at least in a long-term relationship with) Morgana from Taskmaster. There's a dinner party I'd love to get an invitation to.
I heard that Graham Linehan actually wanted Matt Berry as the boss right from the start, but he was busy doing other stuff, so Chris Morris stood in temporarily as a favour.

Morris' role as Denholm was the first time he has played a character in a show that had not been written by himself. He is a very busy man and it is a wonder he did a full season. Might also not be the last time we see him.

Matt Berry's been in loads of things, from Community to Sponge Bob. I think my first memory of him was on Vic and Bob.
Ah Matt Berry is a legend - Lots of recommendations here, but i don't see Year of the Rabbit, which i will add to the list. Also second whoever mentioned Four Lions if you want to do a chris morris film, it's very clever and so funny in a very dark way.
you mentioned before you love Community, so you may also recognize Matt Berry from his season 6 cameo as the grifting professor.
Since the 90's (Brass Eye is great) Chris Morris prefers/is much more a behind the scenes director/writer, which he prefers. If you get a chance to watch Four Lions (the movie) it's hilarious. Matt Berry was the first choice I believe for Denholm but had other commitments, so Morris did the first season as a favour.
He also a birthmark on his face, so i can't imagine being in the makeup chair before a shoot is much fun either.

As other people have said Chris Morris was just too busy. He would be well worth watching some of the output of. I particularly recommend the series Brass Eye, and the movie Four Lions.

Chris Morris who played Denholm was almost certainly the most in demand member of the cast and I doubt they ever had him for more than one and a bit series. Check his stuff out. Amazing.
New man, Matt Berry, is amazing in his own way. His character Toast is a hoot and he is (was) a regular cast member in the tv series of What We Do In The Shadows. His declamatory delivery is a bit of a trademark and you soon get used to and start to enjoy it.
Hi Neil you really must try and catch Garth Marenghi's Darkplace which had Ayoade and Berry in it and if possible 'Man to man with Dean Learner' it's spin off series starring Ayoade.Not sure if the latters on you tube though?

if I remember rightly, there was a surprisingly long gap between series 1 and 2 (compared to the rest following on, excluding the final episode) not sure why, though, but that may have had an affect on why Denholm didn't return

Chris Morris, as well as creating Brit classics like The Day Today back in the day, went off and did Veep on the States amongst other things, so needed to be behind the scenes. You might need a bitta Boosh, Garth Marengi, Toast of London (n then LA) to get a flav of the ensemble which includes Richard A, Julian B and Matt Berry (you need satire and silliness in mind or it'll hurt)

Lots to like here , a shame about the beginning but we didn't miss anything important . A whole new dynamic added to the mix .

Denholm played by Chris Morris is a creator of his own TV series and was prob busy producing his own stuff and was replaced by his son, Matt Berry. And yes, Matt Berry is a recognizable English comedian, I think you will grow to like him as the new boss.
Matt Berry is an absolute god. Chris Morris is too but he's always suited writing better. Matt Berry is an awesome dude and is great friends with bob mortimer (You should check out house of fools) )

I think Matt Barry might have been well known at the time, but this was my first introduction to him, I've gone on to check out his other stuff, he's hilarious. He is currently a star in FX's What We Do in the Shadows. He's also got a great show, if you like his style after you see more you should check out Toast of London, not saying react, it'd be a bitch to edit but it's hilarious. Also I remember you saying you react to panel shows, I always love seeing Richard and Noel on panel shows especially when they are a team. I'm an American so panel shows were something I only got into a few years ago, though I do suppose we had kinda a panel show with Match Game, which I saw in reruns with my grandmother, and that was a hilarious show especially when you look at the era it was in, it pushed boundaries lol.
you should do a reaction to BALLS OF STEEL. hilarious british pranks on the street with regulars who get up to things like a woman who chats up guys who are with their girfriends. its so cringe. the devil is hilarious in it too, a man who dresses up as the devil causing havoc in london with hidden cameras. shaky hand man too. just watch!

According to what I can find, Denholm Sr was killed off simply because the actor had other engagements.
This has always felt like a half episode to me. More of a prologue to the Matt Berry era than an episode in itself with a satisfying story.
I think people have been anticipating this episode as it makes a fairly prominent change to the show.
I don't think Matt Berry was that well known when the show came out.
He's most well known for the TV version of 'What we do in the Shadows' a show that I sadly just don't find funny. (sorry to all the fans, I just don't laugh at the jokes)
WWDIS isnt his most notorius work maybe in USA, and he was already know when this episode came out.
@@jessbelen MB wasn't well-known before The IT Crowd. His only major roles before then were in Darkplace & Snuff Box, neither of which has ever been popular.
He actually had to leave the show because he jumped out of a window.
