Cabrini Green Today. Driving in Chicago: QHD

- Today we will drive around the residual remains of one of the most storied neighborhood of Chicago that was littered with infamy but possessed peculiar charm Cabrini Green Project Housing. Bordered by W North Ave on the north, N Halsted St on the west, W Chicago Ave on the south, and N Larrabee St the location is very well desired by developers today. Numerous developments are occurring today which once held litany of high rises and row houses as part of the Chicago Housing Authority's public housing efforts to provide people with low income only to falter which later was used as an example to gauge the failure of the project housing throughout the country. Few row houses and low rise apartments are still in commission today but resembles nothing like what use to be there in that area the giant monolithic high rises of the past.
More details about Cabrini Green can be found in Wikipedia:
en.wikipedia.o...
Here is a quick drive around the area to observe what it looks like in the contemporary times. Enjoy!!

People love to go here around halloween, I'm from Chicago ,and this is the most visited horror movie trademark in Chicago, Because candy man was actually filmed here, along with chucky and Halloween which was filmed in jersey but still a illinois setting
Kinda crazy to think about the amount of lives lost on those particular roads 😳
Forsure
The government knew what they were doing when they built this project, even though they knew it was becoming more and more dangerous, 11 homicides
After 11 homicides on the premises in early 1981, Chicago mayor Jane Byrne moved into a Cabrini-Green apartment for three weeks, seeking to bring local and national media attention to the ongoing chaos.
To no avail, it is my opinion that this was a way to gather all the blacks in a large area and make them a project exactly what it was.
I’m from the City of Chicago and l left there in 2007. I’m so glad I did but I do miss growing up but I do not miss all of the BS I had to deal with....
In the financial crunch of the 80’s I know someone who left a car there 24 hours intentionally for a stolen car claim instead having bank take it. Was pretty much guaranteed it would be gone or stripped n burnt out within the day parking there. Haha.
they do that shit in detroit every fucking day. nothing new bro
it's sad that demolishing the buildings was the only solution. Many of the residents most likely never lived anywhere else but in the projects. Generations of them resided in the area. And as dangerous as it was, it was the only home they knew. So unfortunate when you are unable to decide your own fate.
Generations, YES, you nailed it.........AND THAT IS THE PROBLEM. Get up off your lazy duffs and GET MOTIVATED. GET a job and stop the fatherless broods. Tired of paying for peoples mistakes.
I actually know people that lived in the projects that moved straight from the projects into their own single family home. That was the original idea behind the projects, not generations of unemployed people living there.
That's what happens when you reply on the govt. U can't decide your future. That should be a lesson
not true people chose to live off government forever instead of having goals to make it out of the projects i know its not easy but being lazy was also a choice they made and not even trying because your comfortable and thought it would last forever
Firstly they become projects once the factories that built them for their workers no longer had use for them. Many people stayed because of not having a spoof dependable income. People made a community the same way homeowners do and generations of their families have been raised in the same place. Most of the people who lived and stayed were not lazy or dependent on the government because they wanted to especially if you were black you had to with the lack of opportunities for better education and labor. Trust there are more self employed people and businesses owners receiving government assistance as well with a healthy income because of the deductions they get they qualify. Individuals like you are busted every day for frauding the system. Stop judging
Mohawk is the street I was waiting on I remember that street in Cooley High movie
Love that movie! If I’m not mistaken, a lot of actors in the movie said they lived in those apartments in their Unsung Hollywood interview.
I lived on that street from 1956-1968.
All those vacant lots would be great for low income high rise housing 🤔
Ok accept that doesn't work that's why cabrini high and mid rises were tore down
@@jenniferhilliker4752 Prettt sure he’s joking. I think everyone knows how the original high rises turned out
@@rk.0423 thank you...I'm very familiar with Chicago public housing... apparently she missed the sarcasm directed at the government
Your being facetious Right? Lol
Nothing like growing up in the pjs and living in the cardboard condos
Still a scary place...
Still too many fatherless families.... Sons without a caring, responsible, loving & present male mentor have the odds against them
And become part of the greater troubles of a community & the nation🙏✨
I remember seeing an episode of Gangland on the History Channel about Cabrini Green and the gang violence that took place there.
I was watching Good Times and it was mentioned that their address was at 921 N Gilbert St so out of curiosity I was hoping to see that street name. Thank you for sharing , enjoyed the music too
I used to go to the greens as a kid and a teenager in the late 90s and early 2000s but I stopped going on 06 before they bulldozed the high rise buildings it was fun being from myrtle beach
Just a dead lifeless place! I used to live there I know I would not live in Chicago ever again in life. If that was my only choice I be like nah that's alright Lord take me on to the house with you then...I'm good flat out!!!
😂😂
@Im Unmire only the ghette like o block and 63rd type shit and cabrini green the downtown area is really nice tbh

When you're driving through the rowhouses, all I can think is, "Oh my God, look at all that parking!" :D Nice vid, thanks for doing this.
It looks like the Gentrification Of Cabrini Green has become the Extension of Down Town Chicago to me !
Every time I hear about Cabini Green I think about that poor precious little girl. I had to google her case to finally learn her name is Shantoya Currie. And for the sake of all children I’m glad they torn those horrible buildings down.
I thought you were talking about the Ryan Harris girl. I’m about to oook up shantoya
Sad story. I just read upon it
i walk around cabrini every day since my school is right there on clybourn and the gentrification you see at every corner still doesn’t get any easier to digest :/
Pause at 27:20 to the left is the Candyman church
I thought Cabrini Greens was just the towers until I watched Hoop Dreams
It look so much better now than it was back when i use to stay there i was so scary to come to cabiri green when my aunt stay there everything look good new development
really interesting drive. i didnt know the history behind cabrini. thanks so much!
You can get books from the library or Google cabrini green
Look it up on youtube man be prepared
Nice video! I remember Cabrini Green when it was and then Mayor Jane Bryne moving in.
Yesss 1981......💭
For one day .bitch was scared
@@5822huron She lived there for several weeks. I was glad she did that. I'm glad it's changing for the better now. Not having someone be scared to walk or live in a neighborhood in America is a positive thing, or anywhere else in the World for the matter.
Do a video for us and tell everybody about it
@@mikelarry9957 I'm at Cabrini Green right now. I Rode my bike through the whole area. Will be posting the video tomorrow on my channel. Stay tuned!
I used to work there interesting it was to say the least .
I half expected someone to come up on you and ask "You here for the Sweets?" Great video Love the music too. I would have given you the bootleg to Philip Glass' Candyman score to ride around with :)
I believe I asked for this video a few months ago! Thank you so much for doing this. I was always curious about the area. So Awesome! Thanks!
You're welcome.
Loved your video!!! I lived not far from Cabrini back in the day and I have lots of friends from Cabrini. I remember when Dantrell Davis was taken, it was so sad. Not to mention all of the innocent lives that were lost there. I pray for peace and for all of the people of my beloved city!!!
At times I miss it, it wasn’t all bad. Growing up there we were a community. My grandmother was known as the Queen of Cabrini
Bro you got Facebook, I want to do a story about Cabrini Green Projects and I plan to go to Chicago as well.💯💯💯
@@rayefulevans9381 I do it’s Jabari Stamps on Facebook

Some of the potholes on those roads are worse than third world countries

I bet it was dangerous ridin thru there back den
Chicago: the Wild Midwest
You mean St. Louis too
Nice drive! The streets are so empty.
There sure is. It’s not like it was when I was growing up in the 80’s and 90’s that’s for sure.

My mom was born in Chicago. Lived there first 5 years of her life. With the demolition of buildings is it safer
Enjoyed the view around cabrini green. I see some of places there are rebuilding for a better future.
True it is Nicer But also Gentrified which isn't a great thing for everyone Especially those who Need affordable housing!

Mother Cabrini was my great aunt teacher here in Brooklyn
I grew up in a bad Project in Pittsburgh and I used to hear how bad Cabrini was.
What happened to Cabrini Green Hospital? I had surgery there back in in 1970s. Also worked at the old Cook County hospital.
Cabrini Green Hospital closed in the 90's.
Hey Mohawk is where they shot Preacher home in Cooley High. Classic film.
Please make a video in Hyde park. Now that we have summer! On a sunny day if you can!!!! Thanks
Wow! Facinating. Thank you!
So ya i'm gonna go watch Candyman tonight to see it in all of it's horrible glory lol

Still looks grim tbf
All those apartments wow
Candyman, Candyman, Candyman.

One Building would make compton or any neighborhood in Los Angeles look exactly just like a PlayGround ! When G-Rap was Poppin' back in the days many of the artists were scared of Chicago because all of the Rappers that was waiting to be discovered and turn the industry out ! Also there was this guy I heard that was inside the Hallway inside of one of them Red Brick buildings singing in the Hallway and he sounded so much better than any artists that was already in the business way back in 1991 ! He sounded better than R. Kelly or on the equal competitive Level with him !
I always wanted to go there vist I love candyman
kind of ironic how it went from complete gangland ghetto to rich neighborhood.
Awesome video
Damn.. even the 2 o'clock store is gone...
It would be nice if the city would fix all the pot holes at Evergreen terrace and repave the whole parking area and strip it. Would make a big difference, Chicago is sooooo corrupt.
The movie Candyman brought me here.
Me too
Sure it is Trying to improve, can't knock it for improving. If so praise the Lord thank u Iesu, Alelujah, Amen. ...and more power to them.
a narrator would be nice
what has replaced the candyman building
I lived here when I was a child.
Is buildings still into with buildings over there like how the gardens is in war section by section
All those new "developments" are just glorified rowhouses that folks pay more money for. I remember CG, but I lived Southwest of there.

What’s the blues song name on the stereo? Love blues listening to Albert king as I’m typing this. From England TH-cam Box Hill Surrey that’s where I live. Different world watching these.
There was a moment when it appeared eleven-year-old Robert Yummy Sandifer might escape with his life standing just 6 ft and waiting only 68 lb he was an unlikely triggerman for the Black Disciples street gang and was on the run after killing his fourteen-year-old neighbor Shavon Dean days after
I’m amazed that there’re any vacant lots downtown.

Where are the pedestrians?
interesting
I'm glad I'm a speed reader.
So is Cabrini Green very safe now, or just...better-ish?
omg! people live there? unbelievable.
You still have to have low income housing. They basically booted them out of the dangerous high rises and put them in the row housing.
@@RichWeigel and they aint gonna be there long. That land is prime real estate. They be moving them to Kankakee.
I was in saint Cabrini youth group home center upstate ny

Do from Ashland and Washington blvd to western
The captions are much too small and fly by like flash cards. Lived in Chicago but never in the projects. Was interested in your documentary but sorry thumbs down because of the aforementioned.
Looks like the U.K
Not really 😂
No where in the UK looks like this. Those roads really need work doing on them, seen better in AFRICA.
Deserted. More dangerous empty than occupied. 🤔🤔

How come you didn't turn the camera to show what the description said on the screen? All you se is the road.

Why those row houses still there? Why not just tear them all down and redevelop the whole area? I know there are still people in those rows houses but maybe they could relocate?
I was asking myself why it look abandon
Where did the people go?
Crimes skyrocketed on Chicago’s southeast side and continues today with an added twist, carjackings.
Could you drive all through s ewing ave on east side chicago starting from 93rd ewing to 118 ave O
That's a messed up hood. South Deering is rough.
Where are the people...
On the south side you didn't know. Now you knoww
Not one tent.
Oh the humanity!
It's a shame. People making a pilgrimage to a place that don't even exist, anymore. Not quite the ghetto you were looking for, was it?
It doesn't exist anymore?
It looks like it exists to me.
I miss my hood 500-502 oak bankroll
Chicago en paz y armonia juntos pero ahora ni salgas por que ahora TE matan por nada

First of all, who the heck reads that fast
They could put rooming houses here and help the poor stay off the streets.
Now the entire city is as dangerous as cabrini was
@CjTooCut yep it is now
No it's not. I live in Hyde Park, and it's very safe over here. I do agree some neighborhoods have been affected by the demolishment of "The Projects", but I can't say the whole city is like how Cabrini was. I'm sorry those projects had to go. They were terrible to live in bro.
