This winter ship video took an unexpected turn, shifting from a fun scene to a tense and possible scary situation. The Aerial Lift Bridge operator issued multiple commands for a vehicle to get off the bridge, something I had never personally heard before. The driver was able to drive off the bridge in time, but it was a little scary as a big ship was approaching, and we weren’t sure what was happening. What makes this moment even more unique is the follow-up interview with the driver, who shared how scared he felt during the incident. Thankfully, everything turned out okay, making this a truly memorable and dramatic event to capture. 3:20 The bridge Lift Bridge operation begins, and the driver panics on the bridge. 4:34 Interview with the panicked driver after the incident.
Not too many bridges lift to let a huge ship go under it, that's for sure! Glad the bridge operator can communicate via loud speaker to help any confused visitors. The Tregurtha is so amazing to hear and see, and it definitely sounds louder from the south pier! Haha. That was quite a moment you captured Mike! Bentleyville is so pretty!
If anyone wants to visit Duluth for the canal, the South Pier Inn is the closest to the bridge and very nice. We got a room there, set the scanner to listen for boats. It was great. The James R. Barker doesn't care what time it is, the Barker Bark happens at 3AM if that's when they are arriving or departing.
Here are the two tools that I use to determine when the ships will be arriving or departing in Duluth. Keep in mind, there is no sure thing because of weather, speed of loading/unloading, etc. However, if you use the two of these together, it’ll really help you know what’s going on. Here are those tools. #1 This is updated by Duluth Harbor Cams, this one can be accurate too, however, it’s all about when it gets updated as well. They do a good job. harborlookout.com/ships#0 #2 This will help you determine exactly where the ship is in live time. It’s extremely accurate. Hey bud it’s me again. All I can add to this is besides being mesmerized by the size of this ship. All I can add is WOW!!!! Again I so appreciate you and your efforts. brings a lot of joy Thanks bud
Mike, braving the cold for us to see the PRT up close and personal again. It never gets old! That horn blast either. Glad that driver was safe and sound ⚓️🚢❤️
Skeeter! What a great treat to see a comment from you. I’ve seen you a few times on DHC having some fun with everybody. Thanks for being part of this channel. Thanks for your enthusiasm and I really hope that you and your family have a wonderful holiday season. In this video, I can’t believe I recorded a guy getting stuck on the bridge. That was wild.
I can see how confusing a first time crossing the bridge would be, so many distractions with bells and lights going off. Glad he made it off in time to watch the PRT from ground level instead of an aerial view. 😅 When I lived at the Jersey Shore, a draw bridge would go up and people would shut the car off and walk over to watch the boats pass, waving, of course. By the time the bridge went back down, everyone was back in their vehicle, ready to roll. It is still one of my favorite memories. Thank you, Mike. Glad you had a chance to chat with a new boat friend from South Dakota. You probably put his mind at ease with your kindness. 😊
Thanks for the videos. Born and raised in Duluth. Had an uncle that was a chief engineer on the boats. We use to go watch his boat come through all the time. He would stand at the door in the engine room and wave at us. Now i live in Utah and still get to see the boats thanks to you.
It's so cool you had that connection to the boats growing up! I can only imagine those memories. I have nothing but respect for the people that have worked on the ships. Speaking of Utah, I had one of the most beautiful experiences out there. Right outside of SLC, I went to antelope Island.
Your video artistry and cinematography are continually improving, Mike. That view of the lift bridge from below… your vantage point… the lighting… and all of the structure’s detail? Sublime. Congrats - and thanks! 🙌🏻
I’m going to be making my way over to Duluth there this coming spring to watch some boats and camp local! Not sure what month yet, but definitely before it hits hot weather again. That ship is absolutely beautiful.
I promise I’ll keep making these videos. We are going to have a lot of fun towards the end of the year. A lot of these ships will be going into winter layout. I will record them for you. I promise you happy Friday.
An excellent treat for a Friday, the PRT departing Duluth on its way to Michigan. Bentleyville looks nice and colorful! That car driver must have scared stiff afraid the bridge would go up with them on it. Love seeing these big ships make that pivot to line up with the canal on their way out. You can see the steam coming out that stack as the PRT makes her way towards the canal. What a marvelous site seeing this beautiful ship cruise down the canal. And the Captains salute to the bridge 👍 Wow is that dark heading out on to Lake Superior. That has to be one eerie feeling! Safe voyage PRT! Thanks Mike!!!⚓🚢⚓
Ken, try everything possible to get out there to record the PRT. In particular, I need to get more videos with Bentleyville because it’s going away soon.
I'm 62 now but I remember living in Duluth when I was 11-12 years old. We would go down to the lift bridge and hang on to the bottom as it went up to see who could go the farthest. None of us ever made it too far. Too scared for one. Also the car on the bridge we used to hear the bridge operator tell not only cars but people to get off the bridge! Some tourists back in the day were under the assumption that they could ride the bridge up and for a time there they would charge pedestrians a small fee to ride up on the bridge! I have so many fond memories and still so many family members living in Duluth!

Mike, many thanks for braving that cold weather to bring us another fantastic video. Merry Xmas to you and your family. Also to all the boat friends watching
I think I would brave any weather condition to see that beautiful PRT. It’s such a beast. It’s so powerful. I had no idea I would catch someone getting stuck on the bridge in their car.
Just another comment from a old guy, back in the 1990 s in December, flew out of Chicago,my home town,in December,it was 20 below zero,Farrenheight, landed in Minnie,it was thirty below, dot on a Northwest airline DC9,flew into Winnepeg,it was 35 elbow Fahrenheit,my buddy and I were the only two guys on that airplane, this would not of happened today, walking through the Winnepeg airport, there was no other people there only the workers!people were coming up to us asking us were we were going! The entire project is projected to be completed by 2031. The estimated cost of the replacement is $1.8 billion, with funding secured through federal grants and contributions from both Minnesota and Wisconsin. The new bridge will be constructed along the existing alignment to minimize environmental and property impacts and will feature a 12-foot-wide multi-use path for pedestrians and cyclists. The chosen design-build delivery method aims to enhance efficiency and reduce construction timelines. Once completed, the new bridge is expected to have a service life of 100 years, significantly improving safety and accommodating oversize and overweight freight.
Another beauty Mike -the combination of the Bentleyville lights, the low ceiling reflecting the city lights and the silhouette of the PRT makes this one of your best. Merry Christmas!
I hope you have a merry Christmas my friend. This was a unique situation catching a vehicle that was stuck on the bridge and finally got off. I’m glad they listened to the Bridge operator. It was interesting in getting to interview from him as well.
I appreciate that, thanks for watching! How can you go wrong with looking at the powerful PRT. Also, it got kind of interesting with that car on the bridge.
I was in Duluth Thanksgiving weekend. Didn’t get to see any ships this time. But seeing the ships have always been a favorite thing to do when I’m in Duluth. Thanks for posting this.
@ it was freezing. The wind was soo cold blowing on us as we walked to Bentleyville. I know the week after was warmer. But it was my first time in Duluth during the winter. I loved Bentleyville
I was finishing my Christmas during the “Live” but was able to see what you had recorded,Mike. I live where I can’t get too far from my house without going over a bridge, it is also a Tourist area, mostly in the Summer. It can be rather terrifying if you don’t know the proper procedure with the bridge. He was able to get off and see the biggest ship! What a night! I wonder what it would be like to BE on the bridge as it raises, what a view that would be. I bet the crew are taking pictures, I would. Fair Winds and Following Seas to the Captain and Crew as they traverse Lake Superior. The Salute is a surprise when it DOES sound. Thanks, again, Mike. Get something warm to drink.
Robin, I got very nervous for that car. I’m glad everything turned on good. We both know that that view has to be incredible at the very top. Someday I hope to record it for you. All the best to you and a happy Friday night.
Awesome video thanks as always Mike!! Must be really something to see such a huge marvel of engineering up close!!! Thanks again for bringing these videos boat friend!
There’s a powerful beast! I really love this ship. I was really stunned when I saw that car sitting on the bridge like that. It was cool to record that.
Great way to end the work week. Watching the PRT head out with it snowing. Hope the driver of that car learned something. I thought this is gonna be bad. Thanks Mike. Hope your staying warm and dry up your way. I saw your weather decided to get a little intense.
I had now seen it all. The ship is huge. And I'm proud to live in Wilmington, DE. Great video. And people say, what's so great about Delaware? Largest ship on the lakes. I take this as a compliment.
Hey friend! I hope all is well. You bring up a very good point. Take a look at this article. It has many years ago but it’s still applies today. It’s a place to pay lower taxes if you register your ship there. www.washingtonpost.com/archive/lifestyle/1980/08/15/the-fleet-from-delaware/14beeb17-7ff6-40a3-bb7e-0fdcacd70672/# (www.washingtonpost.com/archive/lifestyle/1980/08/15/the-fleet-from-delaware/14beeb17-7ff6-40a3-bb7e-0fdcacd70672/#)
Man, that looks cold. But it's actually colder here in Newfoundland. -1C at about 6 PM and we're due for a storm tomorrow. But I have lots of firewood.
Jeff, I’m glad that you enjoyed it, brother, all the best to you on a Friday. It’s not every day I catch a car getting stuck on the bridge and getting yelled at by the Bridge operator.
Thank you for watching, Pari Ann! It's been quite a week! This is the start of a long couple weeks from many people. Fun weeks. A lot of people I know they took two weeks off until the second starting right now. I wanted to kick it off good. I never recorded someone getting stuck on the bridge before. This was the first. I wish you and your family a blessed weekend and holidays
Frank the tank! What’s up, brother? Thank you so much for the generous donation of NZ$2! Your support truly means a lot and helps keep the channel going strong. It’s amazing to have someone like you in this community, and I’m so grateful for your kindness. I hope you have a wonderful weekend ahead. Whether you’re relaxing or out doing something fun, I’m wishing you the best. Thank you again for your generosity and for being such a valued part of this channel!
I was fortunate to have done service work on the dish machine on this when it was over-Wintering in Sturgeon Bay. The crew gave me a tour of the ship and invited me to lunch. Best prime rib I ever had. Was told to come back for lunch any time I was in SB on a Thursday ( prime rib day).
Dave, what a beast of a shit Brother! I was really trying to figure out what was happening with that car on the bridge. I heard the operator yelling. I’m glad I caught this. It makes it so much more interesting and a regular ship video. We even heard exactly what he thought
As per federal orders, the Soo Locks close on January 15 and re-open March 25 every year. During this time maintenance is performed on the chambers. Although there are occasional exceptions, such as ice, these two dates are pillars for shipping season in the Great Lakes. As soon as the clock strikes midnight on March 25, freighters, tugboats, luxury crafts and more can resume lockage between Lake Superior and Lake Huron. Check out this article for a little more information. saultstemarie.com/shipping-season-starts-soon-in-sault-ste-marie/
Big time happy Friday to you, my friend! I see you on the harbor cam chat once in a while. Thank you for having so much passion with the ships. We have such a great community people that love these ships. Also, I thought it was cool to get the interview from that guy that got stuck on the bridge. I just had to know what he was thinking.
I gotta get that snowman rolling. That boat from snowman he’s been having a lot of fun in the cold. What did you think about that guy getting stuck on the bridge? When I talked with him, he did admit to us he was scared on the camera.
I’m so happy that you watched this video. It was really fun to be able to record these videos but in this case, it could’ve been very scary if the driver didn’t listen to the Lift Bridge operator.
Merry Christmas right back to you, Nancy. This was a really interesting video to be able to get an interview with a person that got stuck on the bridge.
Glad you liked the video, friend! I hope you and your family are staying warm and well. I hope all is well in Michigan my friend. This video had a lot of fun things in it for sure.
Wow, is that ship long. A beauty for sure. It's interesting that it converts/cleans the diesel smoke into steam. The ship seemed to be moving right along. Im glad the car got off the bridge ok. He must have been shocked to be in that situation.
Being from VA I would've probably freaked out a tad myself!! 😄 I'm glad everything worked out well. Nice video!, Mike! You must love pretty close to be on the scene so quick Keep up the fantastic work. -Doc

@MarilynHoftey it’s a powerful ship
@@vibewithmikeany idea how long it takes the PRT to get across the lake to Michigan by chance?
I can see how someone not familiar with the bridge could get confused. I’m glad he’s ok and got to enjoy the ship.
Everything worked out great

I hope you have a merry Christmas my friend. This was a unique situation catching a vehicle that was stuck on the bridge and finally got off. I’m glad they listened to the Bridge operator. It was interesting in getting to interview from him as well.
One of my favorites! Great video, as always!
I appreciate that, thanks for watching! How can you go wrong with looking at the powerful PRT. Also, it got kind of interesting with that car on the bridge.
@ yes, it did. Poor guy probably never had a bridge give him an order before. That would surprise the heck out of me too!
He was a nice guy, I talked to him a little after I did the video after interview interviewed him
Loved seeing this boat.....thanks as always! Winter looks beautiful in Duluth! Merry Christmas!!
Very merry Christmas to you, Cynthia
Awesome Mike as usual. Keep up the good work and thanks for the video.
You bet, I’ll keep making them.
I was in Duluth Thanksgiving weekend. Didn’t get to see any ships this time. But seeing the ships have always been a favorite thing to do when I’m in Duluth. Thanks for posting this.
What was the weather like there during Thanksgiving, if I recall, it was pretty good
@ it was freezing. The wind was soo cold blowing on us as we walked to Bentleyville. I know the week after was warmer. But it was my first time in Duluth during the winter. I loved Bentleyville
Top notch, Mike! Love the extra info you always throw in!! Thank you from Alberta Canada!
Thank you for taking your time, my friend. I really appreciate you.
Pretty evening there Mike. Great ship, wonderful video! Have a great weekend, take care and God Bless ya Brother!!!🙏❤😊
Lumpy! Never thought that I would record a guy getting stuck on the bridge in his car
I could record this ship 100 times and I would never get old. I love the PRT.
Holy crap! The horn sure fits the size of the ship!
You are not kidding, super powerful
Always amazing and never gets old!
One of the most powerful ships ever, I hope you’re doing great Mary
I had now seen it all. The ship is huge. And I'm proud to live in Wilmington, DE. Great video. And people say, what's so great about Delaware? Largest ship on the lakes. I take this as a compliment.
Hey friend! I hope all is well. You bring up a very good point. Take a look at this article. It has many years ago but it’s still applies today. It’s a place to pay lower taxes if you register your ship there. www.washingtonpost.com/archive/lifestyle/1980/08/15/the-fleet-from-delaware/14beeb17-7ff6-40a3-bb7e-0fdcacd70672/# (www.washingtonpost.com/archive/lifestyle/1980/08/15/the-fleet-from-delaware/14beeb17-7ff6-40a3-bb7e-0fdcacd70672/#)
Man, that looks cold. But it's actually colder here in Newfoundland. -1C at about 6 PM and we're due for a storm tomorrow. But I have lots of firewood.
Snowing, also in Chicago,no matter what,I will take the four seasons over Palm trees,76 year old Chicago guy!
Tom, when it’s 20 below zero, I definitely think twice about it😂😂😂😂😂🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶
Great video Mike. Thank you. God Bless,
Jeff, I’m glad that you enjoyed it, brother, all the best to you on a Friday. It’s not every day I catch a car getting stuck on the bridge and getting yelled at by the Bridge operator.
@@vibewithmike Yeah, the car on the bridge was pretty wild.
It was crazy
Wow. Another great video in the can @vibe with Mike . Interviewing the driver was a bonus. Thank you.
I really had to know what was going through his mind
That was awesome. Thank you for the great video!
It’s a pleasure, thank you for taking the time to write a nice comment on a Friday
You do such a great job. Great camera angle on The Paul.
Thanks for the feedback! I try to get the best shot.
Fantastic work as always @Vibe with Mike
Your buddy Pari Ann
Thank you for watching, Pari Ann! It's been quite a week! This is the start of a long couple weeks from many people. Fun weeks. A lot of people I know they took two weeks off until the second starting right now. I wanted to kick it off good. I never recorded someone getting stuck on the bridge before. This was the first. I wish you and your family a blessed weekend and holidays
Thanks!
What an awesome story! I know that the cooks take their job very serious on the ships. Did you get all the fixings on the side?
Gotta Love anything PRT Mike. Great video with the Lights for Bentlyville. Hope your weekend is good. Thanks Mike ⚓👍
The coolest ship ever
Wow, just wow!
Dave, what a beast of a shit Brother! I was really trying to figure out what was happening with that car on the bridge. I heard the operator yelling. I’m glad I caught this. It makes it so much more interesting and a regular ship video. We even heard exactly what he thought
Luv the Paul R, great shots! Thank you
It’s one of the most beautiful ships out there
Mike when does the shipping stop for the winter. Would like know.
2:21 just a gorgeous ocean.. 😂 just unreal how much the lake looks like the Oregon coast ❤
Ah Mike - a sight to behold indeed!! It's been three years since I've been home, and I can't thank you enough for posting these videos.❤
Glad you like them! PRT is one of the most beautiful ships out there
Super reel! Thanks
It was really cool getting out there to record this and I was not expecting that driver to do that
Magnificent video yet again, Mike, but you forgot the Boat Friends Snowman, unless I missed it. We like him, too.
I gotta get that snowman rolling. That boat from snowman he’s been having a lot of fun in the cold. What did you think about that guy getting stuck on the bridge? When I talked with him, he did admit to us he was scared on the camera.
Great to see the PRT
It’s a powerful beast, Melissa
Great job Mike, Dan @ Harrisburg SD
Dan, hope you’re doing great! All the best to you
Love the videos!
I’m so happy that you watched this video. It was really fun to be able to record these videos but in this case, it could’ve been very scary if the driver didn’t listen to the Lift Bridge operator.
Yes! I’m glad the situation was worked out and everyone was safe! I’d love to ride up on the bridge one day, safely of course!
That was kind of odd, I didn’t know what was happening with that car
She's just the best! Just like you friend! Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄 🤶
Merry Christmas to you, Lauren! You are a great friend!
Nice pics , Mike! What a ship!
It’s a powerful beast.
Awesome ship and video merry christmas🤩
Merry Christmas right back to you, Nancy. This was a really interesting video to be able to get an interview with a person that got stuck on the bridge.
Mike, you're the best!
How could I be, you already are!
👍👍👍👍👍👍. Thanks Mike.---Michigan
Glad you liked the video, friend! I hope you and your family are staying warm and well. I hope all is well in Michigan my friend. This video had a lot of fun things in it for sure.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Great way to start the weekend! A little Vibe With Mike! 🎉
Lots of videos coming over the next two weeks brother
That was very cool that ship is Huge !!!
That ship was so powerful
As cold as it is I bet the PRT in shrunk down to 1012.5ft. 9 degrees in north Iowa. Enjoyed the video. Thank you Mike!
It’s a huge beast.
These Videos are always fascinating... cheers🥂
Thank you for the kind words. It's a pleasure to share my adventures with you!
Hi Vibe!!! Great vid! You are so passionate and convey the spirit of the Great Lakers nautical heritage! Merry Christmas!
It was really fun recording this video, merry Christmas, thanks for another, David. All the best to you, brother.
I have seen her a few times it the St. Lawrence. The 4K was impressive!! I regret not making the trip up to Duluth on my St. Paul visit in October.
I would have loved to see the PRT in the St. Lawrence. I've been watching the videos of the locks in the St. Lawrence - awesome!
Wow, is that ship long. A beauty for sure. It's interesting that it converts/cleans the diesel smoke into steam. The ship seemed to be moving right along. Im glad the car got off the bridge ok. He must have been shocked to be in that situation.
You could tell he was nervous about what happened when I interviewed him
Merry Christmas to you and yours Mike🎄🎅...Thank you for your continued effort and creating a great community!⚓️
Merry Christmas to you, my friend
Great video and horn. We finally got some snow in lower Michigan so we will have a white Christmas for the first time in a few years.
The horn was so powerful
Thank u ❤🥰
You’re welcome! 😄
Fantastic Video Mike I Enjoyed You Never Get Tired Of PRT Have A Great Friday Night😊

A magic night and then one of my favoritships the PRT! Fun with the paniccar(😂)! Thank’s Mike😃👍
I had no idea that was going to happen with the car
@ 😂👍
👍⛴️
Being from VA I would've probably freaked out a tad myself!! 😄 I'm glad everything worked out well. Nice video!, Mike! You must love pretty close to be on the scene so quick Keep up the fantastic work. -Doc
I was not expecting to see a possible bad situation occur with a car stuck on the bridge
She's the Queen!
Thanks for watching another video, what a great looking cat
Duluth is a beautiful city
It’s nice when it’s not super cold
Thanks Mike, beautiful. You need those spikes for your boots! Steve, Greensboro NC 50⁰ and dropping quickly
Hey Steve! Glad you liked the video, brother. You bet I need those spikes, and fast! I’ll take that weather right now, Steve, send it to me, brother
@@vibewithmike on the way, be there around April!
Between drawbridges and railroad crossings, if you aren't careful you can find yourself in trouble. Nice video.
You can’t play around with those bridges
"What did you see ?!"
"We need a bigger boat".
How are we going to get bigger than that?
