Peter Rowan! It really is hard to tell who is leading,Grisman or Rowan.i do believe this magic couldn't have happened without all of them becoming one!Peter Greene is so fluid,I keep wait for him to just turn into a river ;maybe the New River or Saco, where he meets Clarence, and David !How the heck DOEShe do it?The banjo player,Wildness!

Muleskinner was considered a supergroup during their short time together. Peter Rowan and David Grisman played together in a group called Earth Opera. Rowan and fiddler Richard Greene were former Bluegrass Boys as well. They brought Bill Keith aboard, whom Greene had played with before in the 60s. Keith is considered a primary innovator of melodic style banjo. John Kahn was brought on to play bass. Clarence White was widely considered the premier flatpicker of his time, heralded for his innovative approach to lead playing which incorporated unheard of cross picking and syncopated rhythms. Clarence, prior to his work with The Byrds, was a founding member of the Kentucky Colonels during the early to mid 60’s with his brothers Roland and Eric and banjoist Billy Ray Latham. Clarence was struck and killed by a drunk driver in ‘73 shortly after Muleskinner had recorded their seminal album “A Potpourri of Bluegrass” in addition to this singular recorded appearance. Clarence had also departed from The Byrds to reform the “New Kentucky Colonels.” Clarence was intended to become the guitarist for The David Grisman Quintet. Following his death, none other than Tony Rice (Clarence’s protege of sorts) was selected as the guitarist to fill Clarence’s position in the band.
