Fun fact: Did you know the Tugs were originally planned to make an appearance in Thomas and the Magic Railroad? Seems kinda surprising considering Britt Allcroft attempted to SUE Mitton for wanting to make Tugs
Hiya! I’m one of the Thomas fans brought from the algorithm. I’m honestly surprised that there’s non-thomas fans who like TUGS! I’m also really surprised you have less than 100 subs, you really deserve more! I really like the review! Keep up the good work! :D
The only things from Salty's Lighthouse that I kind of enjoyed were the voice for a few of the characters like Ten Cents, Top Hat and Zorran and maybe like one or two of those ridiculous songs like Zorran's rap from that one episode. It was dumb, but it was hilariously dumb. But other than that, this show is pretty piss poor.
It's kinda sad that tugs never actually got a proper American dub for the series because the tugs designs are actually based on real American tugboats and the show does technically take place in America it sucks that this God forsaken show is pretty much the closest thing we have to an American adaption of tugs
Yea it sucks because there is a audio of a us dub that was gonna come out but obviously never did because sadly tugs failed but apparently Big Mac sounded like goofy lol
I'm surprised this is the only video (that I can find) dedicated entirely to overviewing Salty's Lighthouse. Yeah, it's an obscure show, but a lot of bigger channels thrive on finding obscure stuff like this + you have the semi-cult-classic Tugs mixed in too. Despite being a smaller channel, this was really well done! Glad my deeper drive from The Unlucky Tug's Tugs video brought me here. Keep up the good work!
I came here from The Unlucky Tugs fanmade tugs dub video. All the comments on said video were talking about how much better it was than saltys lighthouse, and I had no idea what they were talking about. so I looked it up on TH-cam and this was the first video that showed up. Judging from the clips you have shown, I can understand what they were talking about :)
Honestly? Loving your videos! Especially this one about Tugs. Tugs is one of those gems I wish had gotten much more success.. But sadly will never get it's proper chance. Not to mention your animations are quite charming! Definitely a treat!
Huh, You Popped up on my recommended, This is a good video! Also, I love the way you draw your character, It reminds me of some of the bigger animations channels! I hope your channel grows big!
The only really good thing about Salty's Lighthouse is all the Beast Wars character voices in the Tugs segments. The modelwork on display in those segments is also good, even if it's better appreciated via the original Tugs series.
Here is a question: should I make a parody video where the TUGS characters and Salty's lighthouse characters do a "walk a mile in the other's shoes" story as a parody where the SL characters have a few days of hard labor and Otis and Big Stack get pissed about getting called the wrong names frequently?
We Thomas fans made a song mocking the show for massacring our sister show! It's simply called "Sh!!ty's OutHouse" or "Shitty's Outhouse", depends on if it's the re-edited or old version.
These videos are actually really good, i cant believe the TH-cam algorithm doesn't put this higher up, i'm a Thomas and Tugs fan, as they are both very nice, i'm already subbed, but wow!
Salty's Lighthouse is one of my guilty pleasures. It's what introduced me to TUGS in the first place and I thought some of the US voices are very decent like Ian James Corlett as Ten Cents and Zebedee/Z.B. So, that's why I still kind of like it, but it's still not as good as the original TUGS.
Yep. I was introduced to Tugs not knowing the show was originally a British show aimed for older kids thanks to a Salty's Lighthouse VHS I rented from the library whenever all the Thomas and Arthur tapes got checked out!
Weirdest thing to me is that some Lego Ninjago cast members voice main characters in this show. Sales voices Ten Cents, OJ, Lord Stinker Eddie and Frank whilst Pythor voices Big Mac, as Big Stack, Hercules, Captain Zero, Izzy Gomez, Sea Rogue, and Billy Shoepack. And to round everything off, the Overlord voices Zorran, Zak, Zug, Bluenose and Boomer. What the hell?
Speaking of "Massacreing my boys," you forgot to mention how they not only dumbed down the plots, but the characters as well. Most notorious example is Steamer, formally known as Johnny Cuba, you know, the gangster. At the same time, they made Sea Rogue an actual bad guy, whereas in Tugs he was a victim of circumstance.
thank you for putting a video on salty's lighthouse as I never really knew about it and hearing about i don't like it but great detail video so good job
I was never American. We never watched anything to do with Salty's Lighthouse... that was Yank Toss, as we put it. but, once upon a time, I did manage to catch an episode of TUGS. It's a... singularly sweet show, which always gave me the impression of a show created by a group who were quite experienced in their craft. All in all, TUGS was a stellar show, and I believe I was quite fortunate to have it as part of my childhood.
The show was set in America during the 1920’s. And since the US dub of TUGS has been leaked recently it almost did gave the TUGS their voices based on their basis of their models. Like American-built TUGS. Not to mention famous voice actors like Charlie Adler, Rob Paulsen, and Jack Angel came in too to play the characters, some of them were pretty good.
I don’t mind Salty’s lighthouse. But it’s just opinion I read it at five but I noticed that awful Editing. & I think some of the voice actors fit with some of the characters. don’t cancel me for this.
Everyone’s got opinions dude, don’t worry about it :) and yeah, some of the voice actors do work, it’s just some the voices they put on that irritate me personally
I feel like I'm either stuck in the Mandela Effect or some other time warp, but I FEEL like I did see one episode of this on PBS but my brain tells me I didn't, even though it DID air on PBS for like a hot second.
You know, this video, and this channel overall is underrated. Of course we have the Unlucky Tug, but 90 percent of his work is Thomas related, and he has only made one in-depth video on Tugs at all (Tugs: The Greatest Show You've Never Seen). And let me tell you, after I saw even one second of what Salty's Lighthouse did to the 13 episodes, I was infuriated. As Tug said, everything that made Tugs good, primarily the elements of a darker theme, was stripped out and formed into a 1990 butchered BWBA/Season 25 version of Tugs. In summary, Salty's Lighthouse was (like Thomas S25) a cheap cash grab. The worst part that I hate from Tugs SL was the name changes and the demanded "gender equality". Big Mac becoming Big Stack to prevent copyright strikes from Mickey D's? Yes, haha, very original. Female voiced Captain Star, Sunshine and Little Ditcher, that made my ears bleed. Also as Tug said, "Oh sure, when I see this piece of sh*t crane, I think little girl." Sunshine and Ten Cents' brother/sister relationship is weird, although in the original show they were like brother to brother like Thomas and Percy in the RWS and the original TVS, but Ten Cents was technically already brothers with Hercules according to an original script
your vid was great! also the star tugs trust ((aka the group that now owns a few models of the tugs)) owns a american dub of tugs like a real dub but it's unfortunately only available to air for a a handful of people in the trust
One thing that I find funny about this show was that Ten Cents was voiced Ian James Corlett (Sorry if I get that wrong), who was the first voice of Son Goku in Dragon Ball. Now I need to see an edit of Ten Cents lines being used in the anime.
I always ponder, If I could go back in time to improve Salty's Lighthouse I'd change demographics from Pre-School to Pre-Teens and play TUGS straight by splitting each episode in original broadcast order in half making 13 episodes into a 26 episode run for the show (so 8 10 minute TUGS slots and 18 7 minute ones). In regards to the cast I'd keep Scott McNeil and the now late French Tickner as Zorran (played more like McNeil's role of Piccolo from DBZ) and Zak and Top Hat and Warrior respectively, recast Big Mac and Hercules with David Kaye (who did a pretty good Sean Connery if memory serves correct, perfect for the former) Either keep Corlett as Ten Cents and Zebedee or recast the former with the late Kirby Morrow, Michael Donovan as Sunshine, Don Brown as O.J, Ted Cole as Zip and Boomer, Michael Dobson as Izzy Gomez, Terry Klassen as Zug, Billy Shoepack and Grampus, and probably either Venus Terzo, Teryl Rothery or Ellen Kennedy as Lillie Lightship. I would've also kept Patrick Allen's recordings of Captain Starr due to his cultural significance with "Frankie Goes to Hollywood" (take a good listen to "Two Tribes", his voice is sampled) and probably would've had Paul Dobson as Captain Zero.
Shining Time 101: What NOT To Do what Salty's Lighthouse Did Wrong. 14:39 Otis (O.J.') doesn't have his paddle wheels, Sunshine's hull is the wrong color, Top Hat, Hercules, and Otis' (O.J.'s) hulls have different accent colors.
Theres a tugs iceberg video on youtube.. that show 1930s vehicles and boats for some of the character basis (Some of the cars seen throughout the show is supposedly from the 1930s) like the tugs iceberg says they're not in the boom.. they're in the depression
Many clues that the show actually takes place in the 1930s like that one book (The stars literally begs the zeds for the smallest contract) I forgot the name of that one
TUGS + 4Kids = Salty's Lighthouse
If your parents think your kids are too old for Thomas but still like anthropomorphic vehicles, let them watch TUGS. That is the best option.
Parents should not be able to do that till a kid what they shouldn’t shouldn’t like
Tugs on it’s own without Salty is phenomenal
It is, the camera angles, story arcs, characters and even the score- especially when the Puffa is about to cross the broken bridge
Plus Big Mickey the crane even became a character in Thomas.
🙌👍
It's ironic how I grew up with Salty's Lighthouse unknowingly realizing it was a watered-down, Shining Time equivalent version of Tugs.

14:39 Otis (O.J.') doesn't have his paddle wheels, Sunshine's hull is the wrong color, Top Hat, Hercules, and Otis' (O.J.'s) hulls have different accent colors.
I actually just bought an ERTL sunshine not to long ago.
"Snugboat Harbor"? They couldn't even use "Bigg City Port"?
It just tugs abridged
Theres a tugs iceberg video on youtube.. that show 1930s vehicles and boats for some of the character basis (Some of the cars seen throughout the show is supposedly from the 1930s) like the tugs iceberg says they're not in the boom.. they're in the depression
Many clues that the show actually takes place in the 1930s like that one book (The stars literally begs the zeds for the smallest contract) I forgot the name of that one
a show based in america never got brodcasted to america
I love how you mentioned that's you aren't the target demographic and givibg your excuse
