What a talented! In that time Ma lin was just 19 years old but can defeat the great Waldner in semi final and then almost take a title in final. so sad for him :(
★★★★★ In retrospect, had Ma Lin won the fateful final here after spectacularly defeating Waldner 3 - 2 at the semi-final, he would have been the one who had 2 Grand Slam men’s singles titles (i.e. one each from WTTC and Olympics) to brag about instead of Liu Guoliang.
ttverywhere yes, could have won all 3 plus 2 lost finals in wttc. that´s 5 major finals. a feat not even Wang Liqin could match. he only had 4 major finals
Bet you're too tall. You need to be about 5'9. I'm 6'2 and not Asian whatsoever. I'm a natural RPB Penholder though. And my coach is a Chinese TPB Penholder who plays short pips on a very light blade. I am forced to play almost exactly like Xu Xin at this height. He is the perfect height for TPB + Pips. And even in his 60's he is tough to get backed off the table, even with me cranking it at him. You have to have balls of steel and ultra consistency to play that TPB pips style. It's much easier to be consistent with the TPB close to the table when you're 5'9 or so. Plus, you also have to come with the flat attacks as soon as possible, which is also aided by being about 5'9
If Waldner would reached the final i dont think he could beat Liu Guoliang back then, it took more time for Waldner to adjust to Liu style, he was so fast and strong in both sides
Wow,what a game..genius game by both ma lin & lgl .seldom watch malin being overpowered from his forehand attack & force to be in a defence position, but i guess the pips block from lgl cause the issue..
Ma Lin used a lot of RPB in this match o_O. I thought it was something he adopted after Wang Hao made it popular. I guess RPB dates back further than I thought
The 38mm ball looks too small, like a tiny pea. The 40mm ball was a good innovation by ITTF, till they inforced us playing the plastic. Plastic ball is some turd, sorry.
Ma Lin best forever! I don't like Guoliang's annoying style. Reminds me of children playing close to the table, only to smash every ball. Stupid ending
Now he is the very coach of the beat team of the world, as you refer the children style. lol My mother hates me to play like Ma lin when I was a child, and I'm too don't really think play close to the table is a cool thing. thumbs up
Ma Lin was only 19 at this stage. on his was too the final he won over Kin Taek-Soo, Vladimir Samsonov and Jan-Ove Waldner
This video quality is better than now 2013.
Quality is better here than in 2017.......by ALOT
yup. That frame rate though.
oh yeah!!
camera angle, video quality is still better here than in 2019
Better quality than 2020 my man.
I wish ITTF would go back to this angle, better view of the game
me too
you are so right. the way they pan out after the serve is great too.
This footage - upload was shot by Reflex Sports and was taken off our licensed (from ITTF) DVD. set from that event
Lol, so funny to see this in 2024

@@dickn.ormous1064 that's why he got thrashed by Jiang Jialiang, Persson and Saive in WTTC semis/finals.
19-year-old Ma Lin could never thought that the trophy one step away would never come to him in this life time.😭
@@thenewguy7527 everyone loses!
Cara que jogaço 😮
This Game is for LGL,despite the errors....with GREAT emotion at the end...hands off coach
Still a great game to watch after all this years and I have the full game on video
Yeahh, that was the beginning of Ma Lin's career!!! Yeahh, Ma Lin is the best!!!
He is one of the best, but not the best.
even he is only 19 in WTTC 1999
★★★★★

+ty0ung0s And he would probably be considered by many as the greatest of all times because of that. It is very odd how things turn out sometimes...
I wonder what would have happened to Wang Hao's legacy had he won 1 or even 2 of his 3 Olympic finals...
ttverywhere yes, could have won all 3 plus 2 lost finals in wttc. that´s 5 major finals. a feat not even Wang Liqin could match. he only had 4 major finals
He had 6 finals hao. Won 09. Even ma long 5 only waldner has 6 wtc oly
omg how good they're.I dont think if today's generation could match their standard
Amazing! !
They could. Just watch Ma Long vs Fang Bo 2015 WTTC.
tteverywhere 97 just watched that finale b/w ma long n fang bo.its amazing match
actually their is difference in view angle
I Love Liu's style. I wish i could be a penhold pips hitter.

Liu Guoliang was more emotional when Ma Long/Xu Xin/Zhang Jike scores a single point
but at least he didn't break the borders lol
Good quality, ittf. Who was camera operator? Can you give him a call and ask for some advice?
Young Ma Lin was more defensive than older Ma Lin.
Whoever plays LGL has to be defensive. Liu is like Supersonic.
@@shuye6208Ma’s serve also quite attackable at this point of his career.
who would have guessed that liu was going to be his trainer

Its good to play close to the table
Astonishing!
I cant believe ma lin is using rpb at that time
In the age of small balls, rpb isn’t that advantaged because it sacrifices too much speed compared to regular block.
great match, great players
that was some serious hard hitting from short pips
poor to.Malin, many times in the final Wttc but not get single one.
Wondering if we'll ever see a WTTC final between penholders again!!
it was like seeing 2017 wttc final
Seeing this match, you can already imagine Ma Lin becoming world champion :(
He never became World Champion though...
That's the point of the sad face
Does winning the Olympics in 2008 count?
Nope, that makes him Olympic Champion. He would have had to win the World Championships.
Sure, however table tennis athletes in the Olympics are composed of athletes around the world therefore he is a world champion not a "World Champion".
If Waldner would reached the final i dont think he could beat Liu Guoliang back then, it took more time for Waldner to adjust to Liu style, he was so fast and strong in both sides
When pen hold lead the world...
Did Liu complete bis grand Islam there?
yes ! he won olympics in 1996 and world cup in 1995 i think
George D. no liu 's world cup was 1996. world cup 1995 is kong linghui.
If you dont now. Before 2001 it was used to play 3 sets to 21 points in one set
bump
But why in this match there were 5 sets?
@@ttime9947 Because for the final it's the best of 5 sets
enjoy !!!
Liu was using Stiga Clippa on his forehand and Mendo on his backhand.
Ma’s serve is very undeveloped at this point. Liu can often loop or drive the second ball relatively aggressively with great comfort.
Wow,what a game..genius game by both ma lin & lgl .seldom watch malin being overpowered from his forehand attack & force to be in a defence position, but i guess the pips block from lgl cause the issue..

LGL serve looks cool :D
does anyone know which rubber (FH) liu was using in this final?
+abedec5 stiga clippa, stiga mendo energy
liu already used the reverse side i wonder wheter he thought that this style yould become that sucessful(wang hao,and now also xu xin)
Guoliang was very aggressive and had Ma Lin way back from the table many times.
Ma Lin used a lot of RPB in this match o_O. I thought it was something he adopted after Wang Hao made it popular. I guess RPB dates back further than I thought
Wang Hao is not creator of rpb but the first rpb oriented player. Other players like Ma Lin prefer to hit with forehand.
+ReyIined but this is the just backhand tecnique , isn't it? i can't see any rpb
+Davide Auriemma just look closely at what color they use for their forehand and back hand and you can see them both using it
Thats why Liu won
🎉
Who’s ma Lin? Who’s liu gouliang?
The winner is Liu Guoliang
The 38mm ball looks too small, like a tiny pea. The 40mm ball was a good innovation by ITTF, till they inforced us playing the plastic. Plastic ball is some turd, sorry.
!!!!!!
LGL is adorable. haha.

I like his style. Most aggressive player ever. Every1 has to play on the defensive playing liu.
