  • In today's Attic Find Friday, I talk about the 1920s strip baseball card collection that a woman found in a cigar box in a closet, inherited from her mother, who inherited from someone she was caretaker for! Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, and more!

    Smarter for her to consign? Or sell outright?

  • @Johndeplume.

    Whatever she gets back from it is a bonus, as it cost her nothing, so I hope whatever she gets she puts to good use - or spends it on a holiday for her family.
    As always, thank you for sharing this story, and have a great weekend. 👍

    Interesting. I’ve been to that store years ago. I was very impressed with their organization and inventory. They were the first brick and mortar store that I saw selling online as well. This was probably around 1999 or so.

    Very cool! Have a friend that inherited his Grandfather's collection and it is in a safe deposit box at a bank. Apparently many of the cards are Sandy Koufax. He has asked me to help look over and get values on them. I am super excited to look them over and see who else he has!

    When your name is Tris or any unique famous person you’re obligated to know who that person is. Recently, I met a young college kid named Brooks, I found out he played baseball in high school, so, of course, I mentioned Robinson and he had never heard of him- poor parenting? Sponsorship opportunities are great but when they offer content ideas, run Charlie run. Another great tale, Mike! Happy to hear your newsletter is over 200, they’re really good!

    Thanks as always for an awesome story. Joe Davis is the group submitter who worked with Geoff and I think now has some kind of affiliation with CardsHQ. Anyway, though not pretty and relatively inexpensive , these cards have a very historic significance in the hobby. Very cool and thanks for sharing!

    Cigar boxes are/were sturdy, as they were generally made of some sort of humidity-leveling wood (cedar, cypress, various exotics) - cheaper woods or cardboard would have dried out or allowed the cigars the mold, and spoiled them …

      Also their were few, if any shoe boxes in households around that time. My generation definitely used shoe boxes. Their were no holders or specific means of card storage.

      @JunkWaxHero My dad has been a cigar buff since I was little, and his garage is full of cigar boxes, which are full of all sorts of stuff, things, and bits (some times, even labelled!) -- if cigar boxes weren't the most common storage container, it makes a lot of sense that well-preseved card finds are often in cigar boxes. I have not-so valuable complete sets of 1985 and 1986 Topps Jumbo well-preserved and well-fit in Macanudo cigar boxes - not worth much but smell terrific!

    My grandmother - who I'm not sure could lie if she tried - hated my father. That said, apparently my mother threw a box of purely Mickey Mantle cards out when he left her with me. Don't know what was in there, but she said it was just "two bushels of that handsome man on cardboard". Maybe they were all Sporting News cards all wrinkled, but even then ... my god woman. When the story comes from a woman that thinks you'll literally go to hell for saying "gosh darnit", you want to cry. Makes sense though. She threw my entire collection away when they moved. "Taking up space"

    I’d sell myself but if she’s not sure the best way to do it then using that shop is good. I’ve used them for group submissions before for PSA. As for competing with Geoff I think they are but I’d assume they’re baseball only and Geoff has all sorts of sports as well as pokemon and magic, so if I were in Atlanta I’d stick to Joe’s shop

    Wow, another crazy find. Hey, can you tell me, for these hand cut cards, do you know if it's legit for people to cut them these days to sharpen the condition or would that be tampering? Just curious because they are already hand cut.

      @JunkWaxHero  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    • @jamesgottshall5688
      @jamesgottshall5688 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@JunkWaxHero I would always leave them as is. You would just making the card smaller. some like buying for the character of the card and the stories it could only tell. It would be like trying to erase writing on the card, it may work or will make card worse.

    • @djmoonchild01
      @djmoonchild01 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@JunkWaxHero Thanks. I noticed some of them already had the white borders cut off, like the original owner did it back in the day. Do you know if that affects the value?

    • @jamesgottshall5688
      @jamesgottshall5688 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@djmoonchild01 most graders want to see the intended boarder for the highest grade. If you cut out, for example, box bottoms on wax boxes in late 80s leave the black boarder lines for highest grades. Very rare if you come across high grades of cut items if scissors are used. Most need to use sharp knife with a straight edge.
