An excellent guide to bowl turning Martin, not just for beginners, but us more experienced turners too. Well produced and documented, with just the right amount of detail, to provide a solid tutorial for turning a bowl. Well done mate. Cheers Mike
I've watched a ton of woodturning videos. I was recently asked by a new turner to recommend a 'bowl making video'. I sent this one! Saban explains so well, shows the full process, uses good turning techniques, and calmly shares safety tips. For a new turner, this video should be required viewing!! Thanks for your care in making it.
Martin I’m 62 yr old retired and my daughter got me a gift certificate to Rockler, a hardwood/hardware chain, for a bowl turning class and I loved it. Although the instructor was adequate that day considering 6 new turners, I understand more of what your saying and explaining. Thank you for your time
There should be more people like you who take the time to explain the movement of the tools, simple and informative. I've only been turning for a couple of months, but this certainly helps with my confidence. Ty, beautiful bowl 🥣.
I am a complete novice and have just started to watch your videos. You really do miss nothing out and I have followed this bit by bit while I am working. Very useful. Thank you I will be watching more!
Thank you for taking the time to explain in detail all the stages in turning a bowl, I am a new turner and even at my level I was able to understand clearly these steps. I look forward to being able to put your helpful teaching to use. Thanks
This video was really helpful to me because of the way you had broken down each step of the process. There even things I did not realized I was doing until I had seen this video.
Thanks Martin, turning for about two months now and came across Mike Waldt; he is always singing your praises so of course had to take a look. Glad I did and have learnt a few things just from the couple of videos I have watched so far, an added bonus is that you are left handed :D :D so I can see how you are holding your tools which is most important to me at the moment to reduce the number of 'Catches' I am experiencing. Looking forward to many more of your projects.
Hi Peter. Thanks for your comment. I am glad you enjoyed the video and benefited from you, being left handed like myself. I hope you continue to enjoy my productions. All the best, Martin
Enjoyed this edition of beginners woodturning project, nice to produce a bowl from scratch, with attention paid closely to finishing. Thanks Martin keep up the good work.
WOW.....walked out to the porch today...so happy....a box from WALNUT LOG with my Yorkshire Grit AND Hampshire Sheen. Can not wait to "give it a go" ( is that the UK way of saying?") Thanks guys.
Martin, a very nice simple but elegant bowl with a great finish. My grandson and I have been turning for a few months. I have viewed hundreds of videos. This is one of the best tutorials I have found. Thanks for taking the time to help.
As someone who hasn’t even got his lathe out of the box yet, this is the first video that’s made complete sense to me. I did watch one yesterday that got close, but I remember there were a couple of things that left me a little confused. Thank you and a very easy subscribe.
M. Saban Smith Woodturning Unfortunately been unwell for the last couple of months, but on the mend now so hopefully I’ll soon be at it. Thanks for the reply.
Hello from 🇨🇦Martin. First time viewer and your newest subscriber. I’m new to wood turning and have made three boxes so far and SO FAR SO GOOD LOL. I am using some jointed and planed 2”x4”’s and they are all glued up and ready to turn . Searched on Here for a beginner bowl and VERY glad I found you. Your very clear and explain the process very well. Your time and efforts to teach us Newbies is very Much appreciated . A million thanks.
big like and subscribe! Just got my first lathe for Christmas a jet 121vs! Very excited to start my first bowl and here to learn how to turn it the correct way and safely. Thank you for your help.
I am a beginner turner and I want to say thank you for a very thought out and simply explained in full detail of how to start turning a bowl. Martin, again I want to thank you. I look forward to viewing your other videos.
As someone that is considering getting into woodturning, this is the best I have seen, if ever you want to try teaching please do so.. I wish I was on the other side of the pond, I would be at your door step.
Hi Martin Thank you for this lesson. I have been turning for a couple of years now and I realise that watching these beginners lessons I have learnt some bad habits. Thank you for putting me on the straight and narrow again. From an Aussie. Keith
Martin, IMHO this is your best effort to date in the beginners series. I especially liked (appreciated) the overhead shots as they truly demonstrated just how the tool cut. Perhaps it is my new glasses cleaner but it seems that your camera is providing a more clear image. Thanks so much for all the hard work you have done, not only with this series, but with the total package of information that you are providing the turning community. You sir, are a prince!
Got a lathe for my birthday from the wife, hopefully ill turn my first bowl soon... I stumbled upon your tutorials and i must say they are the best ive seen on youtube! Very nice mate, appreciate the videos. Keep it going. From a south african living in france.
Hi from Atlanta, I'm a new subscriber. I just started woodturning (only one presentable bowl so far) and I'm enjoying your very helpful and well-made videos. Thanks!
Thanks so much for this, you do a wonderful teaching job for us newbies. And you had me rolling on the floor as you counted the lines on the ruler to convert 10mm to imperial :)
Sir, you’re a “living guide” 👌👍 I’ve never run across such a clear and detailed description of the bowl turning basics for a beginner before. Extremely clear explanations (I loved the indications of the angle for gouge’s flute 🤓) even for non-English native speakers like me. If ever a woodturning textbook had to be written for schools, please be among the authors 😉 A big big Thank you 🙏🏻 Fulvio from Rome
This is the second time I’ve watched one of your video and the first thing I noticed was the lack of music the second thing I noticed was how instructive well done and thanks
Excellent presentation Martin. Simple forms can be both elegant and challenging to achieve and finishing well makes all the difference, great beginners project.
Such great explanations and teaching, every stage is explained perfectly and reasons why he's doing it that way and what to look for. TY Martin for your videos...
Just got a lathe as a Christmas present. Finding how to use it before I get started, Great vid. Thank you. Have subscribed to your channel. Keep up the good work. :-)
Excellent as usual Martin. I do like the way you deal with metric and imperial, just like me you know the full inches and feet but when it comes down to the fractions you just can't beat a good mm. Well done.
First time here Martin. Very informative. Just made my first bowl yesterday with a new bowl gouge and had a few problems. After seeing your video I saw what I was doing wrong. I’ll try another one later and see how it works out. I had to smile on your confusion with the imperial measurements. I’m from the states and have the same confusion with the metric system.
Bought a lathe. Now learning how to turn a spindle/bowl before I switch it on. Your videos are really informative in a easily digestible way. Keep it up. I may even plug the lathe in soon. :-)
Iv'e just started learning how to make bowls and watching your video has made it a lot easier because you actually show how to use the tools compared to other vids iv'e watched thanks mate.
Hey Martin! I want you to know I have now 3 favorite turners to learn and grow from and they are Steve (Templeboy Turnings), Mike Waldt and yes you. You are the icing on a cake not hiding anything and showing actually how you do most things. I truly enjoy learning from you. Thank you VERY much!!
Hi Martin Very good instruction for new turners. A couple of things to add that may help. Mark Hobster problems could be that his tools are not sharp enough. It is important to keep them sharp and even sharpen them again before the final finish cuts. Also lathe speed possibly he is running too slow and making too big a cut - try little cuts. If it is your first bowl beware of the outer rim which will be razor sharp until the edge is dressed back. When sanding it is important to change grit size 120,150,180, 240,320,400 without missing any out. I reckon you covered every thing else and BTW I love your shavings! Keep up the good work I usually learn something.
Been turning for a year or so , have been struggling some , but getting it done . I wish I had learned from you to start ! You are the best teacher for beginners, for sure ! New subscriber! 👍
My first attempt at turning a bowl was a disaster, so I haven't tried it again...yet. I think this video is the best beginner demonstration that I have seen...and I have looked at a lot. I especially liked how you added the graphics denoting the tool angles and cut path across the inside of the bowl. I now feel confident that my next effort will be a success. Many thanks.
Really enjoyed your video. Just bought a lathe and am half way through my first bowl. Ready to turn it around into the Chuck.... Nervous it's going to fly off and hit me! Thanks for the effort you put in producing these videos.
Hi Martin I’ve been using my lathe for about a year now , turning pens and drawer handles and such, and decided I was au fait with the tools enough to try a bowl. Thanks to your fantastic video I turned my first bowl in cherry successfully! I now have the confidence to develop and produce more advanced stuff. Many thanks, Brendan

Very nice and informative best I’ve seen yet. Thanks a lot I’ll be watching. Great camera work be the way.
