Both Bill and the bird need to take some time to learn how yo trust each other. I love the analogy of trust being like a bank account. Every good interaction is like a deposit in the trust account. So that acts as a buffer for when and if there’s a bad experience between the person and parrot. You have to always make sure your deposits outweigh your withdrawals. And over the years of having my birds there have been times where the account is almost at zero for one of my birds. And I know it’s my fault, because I know him so well, but he (my parrot) ACTS quite bold and bossy, but that is just false bravado. Things SCARE him, even things that I don’t really think will scare him do. And unfortunately, I can become the target for that fear. Then I carry fear, (parrot bites are no bueno!!) parrots are very very complicated. They are NOT for everyone. It’s a real relationship with a being that has real emotions and the ability to carry a grudge a long long time. But when it’s good, and so sweet, it all feels so worth the effort. I know you both know what I’m talking about!
I love how much he wanted to make a connection with Jewel. I also love that Dave mentioned he never trusts the bird. He trusts what he reads from the bird. My husband struggles and does much better getting them to fly to him than stepping up. Great video!!❤
OMG "I never trust the birds...I am always confident in how I read them" ...that needs to be on a tee shirt. That is the part of life with a parrot very few people understand. Another great video. And my Severe Macaw now does commentaries on your videos lol
This video gave me the confidence to ask my adopted greenwing to step up, and she did. Watching your videos, especially this one, has taught me a lot. Thank you, Bird Tricks, and thanks, Lori and Bill !
I don’t think so, he knew he wasn’t a target, so he felt safe doing that. Just to show Bull he was ok. Reading birds is a skill you can get really good at, if you know parrots really well. Their eyes change , the way they hold their body changes, even the way they hold their beak. And sounds too, even flapping their wings can tell you things. Birds will typically use their beak as a point to balance themselves, especially transferring. So they’ll put their beak down on your hand to steady their body as they move from perch to hand. But when you’ve had a bad bite and some trauma and gap in trust, it’s hard to leave your hand in the strike zone. BUT if you pull your hand back and they bird loses it’s balance then they don’t trust you to be solid enough and they won’t come to you.
