I don't know starlings talked like this and can mimic so many sounds really cool.
Now I see why they were brought to the US in the old days.

    Thanks for the comment.
'WTF' is exactly what I said when I heard him speak the first time! He now has a vocabulary of about 30 words/phrases/whistles...including imitating my giggle, the cat meowing the dog whining and other birds he hears outside. Starlings really are amazing birds!

I love it, he is so beautiful and smart and sweet. I rescued a Robin, I'm just wondering how old is your bird now ? What does he eat as an adult. Mine likes oatmeal cooked, with cooked eggs, some vege, fish, meat...mealworms...some fruit, lots of blueberries. What does yours eat ?

She has very good clarity in Her speech!
You could play Her music of People whistling, She will learn that & any other Birds songs.
I have lived around, & observed these Birds closely for many years.
They are pests in vast #'s but they do keep lawn Grubs in check (their fave food, along with House Flies).

    Hi Lovemyconures,
Sweet Pea is The Best! it is so amazing having a pet that not only talks, but sounds exactly like me! it's like talking to myself, only better! lol
Hi cage is a large flight cage, about 20" x 30" x 36". I use brown Kraft paper on the bottom and have natural branches for him to perch on.
Starlings are everywhere, so if you keep your eyes open, you just might find one that needs a new home.
Good luck and thanks for your comment!
    Sandy

The adult recipe is as follows:
1 cup Halo brand dry cat food
    1 Tums
1/4 cup natural applesauce (no corn syrup)
    a pinch of avian vitamins
Soak the crunchies overnight in a little bottled water (non-fluoridated). Pulse in a food processor just enough to crumble the pieces - the adults don't like mush sticking to their beaks.
pulverize the Tums and add to the applesauce along with the vitamins - then mix all together.
I put half in a small sealable container and the other half goes in the freezer.

For babies, you would need to blend to the consistency of cooked oatmeal and feed with tweezers, or the end of a straw, cut at an angle.
Tums is for calcium - TH-cam won't let me post a link to Tums, but you can Google it.
DO NOT give them any water directly into their beak - they will aspirate on it and die. Mix the water into the food.

In the Mabinogion, Branwen trains a starling to speak and to deliver a message to her family when she is being abused. The Mabinogion is the earliest example of British prose.

Thank you for your comment, Papia18.
I rescued him after he fell from his nest - he was only five days old and had only a few pinfeathers. European Starlings are very common birds and are one of the few NOT on the protected wildlife list so it is NOT illegal to have one as a pet. If you should happen to find one, it is best to have him checked out by a wildlife rehabilitator to make sure he is not injured. Info for taking care of your Starling can be found on the StarlingTalk web site.

    ...ran out of space...
I feed him one tablespoonful in the morning, once a day. If it's gone in the afternoon, sometimes I'll give him a bit more, but it seems he doesn't like to eat much at night.
    Did you find one?

  • @Sandycane

I forgot to mention, I made him two "cubbies" that attach to the outside of the cage where the nesting boxes would go. They are made out of plastic canvas, with a piece of cardboard on the bottom so his toes won't get stuck in the holes and it attaches to the cage with Velcro. He loves sleeping in these.

    Hello Pia,
I'm sorry a Starling hasn't found you yet. One will, if it is meant to be. I now have another Starling! Mr. Poppins fell out of the nest in the chimney of my house. His foot was injured and required treatment. He and Sweet Pea are now contented roommates! Keep your ears open as you will hear a baby bird long before you see one.
