Also the choke by the clutch lever, does the original carbs have a hookup for the choke cable? Mine is there but isn't hooked up and the carbs on mine are from 82. So I've been having to reach down and pull the choke.
You will love the little 550, light and nimble, great handling! Also look at my recent vids on my bike. done a lot to it, and did all the work myself. Try and find an header for a 82-86 GPz, or kz model. they will fit with minor fabrication. Good luck, and safe riding!

Ha Ha, yep I do the same. I always have a piece or cardboard from a book of matches. Never figured out why the choke mechanism doesn't work. weird. I am 5-10, and yeah the Bike is really made for smaller people. But, its not to bad. Highway pegs shouldn't be too much. I have painted, re jeted, and put a 83 GPz 550 KERKER header on it, with a short Road Race baffle in the Meg. Quite loud now. Recently tires and chain. will be rebuilding the forks this fall. I still have less than 8k on it.
Habe mit 61 Jahren Führerschein gemacht und solch ein Motorrad gekauft. Allerdings der Sitz ist etwas niedrig. Aber nur unbequem beim halten. Choke ist 1a. Ab 100 Km/h viel Benzin. Maschine ist mehr für Frauen oder Fahranfänger. :) :) . Aber ich bin zufrieden. In Deutschland ist viel Scheiße mit TÜV.
I need a set of carbs for mine. It's a project bike. I've rode it on the street once and in the yard earlier. Do the miles reset on these after so many miles? Mine reads 5,200 miles

Love it I have the same one completly stock. What do you think about instaling highway pegs? worth it? I go on some longer rides and my hips cramp up a bit I am also kinda tall 6'1"ish. as for the chock I stuff a folded paper between the handle and chock whil I get ready and it keeps it good
These bikes are super reliable. The only real maintenance items are clutch cable and new needle for the carbs every two years. The needle goes bad because of new reformulation fuel in the USA. Don't be afraid to buy one with a loud timing chain adjuster. They all make noise.
I cut the muffler can under the bike off, then removed the core inside the megaphone. this not an easy modification. you have to drill all the spot welds out, use a cut off wheel, and do some welding. The CORE i replaced everything with is from an KERKER K2 system, modified to fit. Yes, it did lean things out a bit, you must back out your mixture screws for a smooth idle. I later installed a "true" jet kit from 6sigma racing. Go to ebay. these kits are altitude and application specific. cont--
Oh wow! I thought mine was the only one that did that. Sorry cant help. I have had carbs off several times, and it seems the problem is elsewhere. i have not taken the handle bar control apart yet. i will let you know....

Its not to bad. Its way better than a Ninja 600, or 636. but not as comfy as a big bike, like a Zephyr 1100, or GPz 1100. The liter bikes are very nice for long straights and long trips. But this 550 is pretty good at 200mi or less trips.

Nice, my first bike was the exact same Zephyr, I miss it. I lost it in a house fire. Now I'm rockin a ZR7 the sporty Zephyr.
