Door Latch Recall: HOW TO ESCAPE

- In September 2016, Ford issued a recall for '13-'15 Ford Escapes to have their side door latches replaced with a sturdier latch and pall mechanism.
This is a video showing what that mechanism does when it fails and what it actually is. PLEASE get this fixed proactively and do not resort to a ratchet strap like I did to bring it into the dealer!

Summary
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2012-2015 Ford Focus, 2013-2015 Ford Escape and Ford C-MAX, 2015 Lincoln MKC and Ford Mustang, and 2014-2016 Ford Transit Connect vehicles. A component within the door latches may break, preventing the doors from latching and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.
Remedy
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the door latches with an improved part, free of charge. The recall began on January 27, 2017. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 16S30.

Sure thing Pablo ...lol... this video may seem unnecessary to you but it was mainly to let people know that they dont have to pay for costs associated with recalls. If you scroll through the comments you'll see some people who have unknowingly paid for work at a dealer which was really a recall issue... just making awareness so people aren't hoodwinked.... hope your spa has been good to your vehicle haha

What did you do to fix it?
2015 Escape, I have not taken it in for the recall yet but I do have the paperwork. There is also a recent recall for a transmission shifter bushing that I will probably get done too. My drivers door lock unlock buttons no longer function at all. I am not sure if that is a symptom of the door latch recall or not? the doors seem to latch OK. Hopefully they can fix that while the door panel is off. Car only has 9900 miles on it so I am hoping that they do not scratch up the door panels when they do the latches.
Are they also supposed to replace the tailgate door latch?
I got them replaced early 2017. Had to wait few months before the dealer got the parts in stock because they were in such high demand. Luckily mine never broke before they were replaced. After they were replaced, noticed they were quieter to lock and unlock, which was nice.

Thank you for the content. Could you do one for the backup camera turning off and back on I believe it's a lose plug. And for sync just turning off completely not allowing use other that the radio and no voice control
Hey MC, that sounds awful- jeez. With the backup camera, are you talking about an install similar to the one we made a video on for this channel or the actual factory backup camera?
@@HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews from factory. It will work then shut off sometimes, and other times work with no problems.
@@jamesstewart67 crazy that the factory system is doing that... there IS a recall for the APIM (accessory protocol interface module) if you haven't addressed that one yet? It's a direct replacement provided by the dealer- perhaps try starting there? I haven't researched that one too much yet though. It WOULD make sense though as the APIM controls all of that stuff you mentioned.

Hi Shaniyah- I'm glad you've found it helpful! So, in regards to your door latch issue, I've updated the video description details to show what numbers you can call for general ford customer service- the real helpful info is the case number for the recall: 16S30.
What's a bit more practical than calling Ford Customer service is if you just call your closest reliable Ford dealer - if you reference "Ford Recall 16S30" and tell them of your year of Escape, they should take it free of charge and provide you with a free rental until the door is repaired.

I have the same issue as you, unfortunately Ford told me even if it is a safety recall on my door latch, they are not obligated to give me a free rental.
I'm sorry Mark- the dealers in my area told me its standard policy - im in Central VA- I did more reading and found that Ford has been ridiculed nationally for it not being a full policy across the board, especially with the airbag issues back in 2018... I'm going to issue a video update on this to avoid confusion in the future- im sorry it wasn't offered to you, Mark. Hope they take care of your doors quickly.
BTW, what about that shifter cable bushing recall?
Good question- I haven't dealt with that one yet- what do you know about it? Is that one for the parking issue?
@@HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews Yeah, supposedly with the deterioration of the shift bushing, a selected gear--like the parking gear--may not actually be engaged, causing the car to roll if the parking brake is not activated. It's supposed to affect Escapes from May 2013 - September 2014 build dates.
how much was the rental ?
and why would it take 3 days for them to fix it ?
Rental was covered by the dealer. Took 3 days because they were backlogged with recall requests and my Escape sat in the queue waiting to be worked on
Tried to bring mine in but the service people said that there is NOT a recall for the 2015 escape door latches.

do you know if the ford focus 2012 has this recall? same problem with the latches...
Good question- I'm not sure about that but you can search your VIN on the NHTSA website and see if there are those recalls associated with your year of Focus
@@HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews yep! I used that site and found out that it was indeed part of the recall and hasn't been serviced yet.
have you had any problems with your replaced latches? there is another youtuber that unfortunately had 3/4 of his replaced latches fail as well!

Unfortunately I had this problem two months ago and the two back doors latces broke down and replaced it on my bill ..without knowing that it could be fixed for free
Dang, that stinks big time- sorry you paid for it. The dealer should have come forward and said it was part of the safety recall. If they did indeed let you pay for that work, that's disappointing. I hope you have better luck elsewhere and you may be able to get a refund if you go back to them, perhaps?!
I have a '15 SE Escape and when I do a VIN search for recalls, it comes back with 0.
Well that at least makes you feel good, hah. Did you buy it secondhand- meaning do you think a previous owner did the fixes?
@@HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews I tried it on ford's website and others like nhstsa and both came back 0. I did buy secondhand from Ford dealership. Not sure if the online search knows if a recall was fixed or not. It either does, or there are no safety recalls for my car idk.

I know that once mine came back from the dealer the ford website no longer listed the door latch recall- my guess is that if you bout it from the dealer they already took care of it and the recall codes went away. I have had my door latches replaced under Safety Recall 15S16 or 16S30

I took my car in years ago and had them replaced. Apparently they didn't replace anything and now I have a broken one
My 2016 Escape has this problem but it's not under the recall.
Are you sure? Have you tried entering your VIN number in Ford's RECALL page on their website?
if not, try here: owner.ford.com/tools/account/maintenance/recalls.html .... would be worth looking into even if it's not the same exact recall number, it would be great if you didn't have to pay for the repair!
TY. Corporations own us. Get our money for plastic components in very vulnerable auto mechanisms. This video posted four years ago? Ford is still putting defective plastic locks in 2023 vehicles.
They are not providing me with a rental and have spoken with multiple dealers all saying the same thing
Shoot- that is weird. Where is your general location? I'm in Virginia and all the dealers in our area covered it- its supposed to have all expenses paid by Ford. How long did they say they would.have your vehicle?

Hi Maria- thanks for the comment - I owe everyone an explanation- I was incorrect on a guaranteed rental. Apparently FORD has to explicitly state it in the initial notice whether a rental will be offered / guaranteed- other than that, it's up to the dealers.
