Again I am speechless. Now you have done 6 of my recommendations. And all of them breathtaking. After Brad Paisely and Kenny Chesney, two artists I know you greatly appreciate, I went on to introduce you to the young Blaine Larsen with the suicide song and then Coffey Anderson with the cancer song. And you didn't know them and you gave both such wonderful testimonies and brought in your personal issues and were so vulnerable and honest. Then I introduced to you Don Williams, a giant artist of huge reverence that even hugely established artists stand in owe in front of. Again you had spot on comments. Now I offer Nanci Griffith for reaction, and you haven't heard her name either. But you see how beautiful she is, both physically and artistically. A huge humanist as well. And again you express your owe for her voice and her artistic value. I am flabbergusted by you two. I just can't believe my eyes and can't wait with what you have to say about the rest of my choices. So far 100% six songs out of six. Now the "greats" are coming each and every one. The following artists are huge world artists. Huge... I thank the Lord for having been introduced to you in these tough corona days and you are just making my day every time, every time!

Thanks Sam for correcting Nanci's family name. Zack said Griffin and you corrected him saying "Griffith" but without insulting him. You save so many situations like this for Zack, so Bravo. As for you Zack. I don't mind at all. You can mispronounce names as much as you like. Griffin or Griffith, I mean who cares. You love the songs and you talk so brilliantly. I am never ever disappointed with you. You are out of this world. I can't believe what I hear from you. So keep doing it the Zack way even if you mispronounce names.

I am not being petty-minded. But you know we love your faces so much. But unfortunately what I noticed almost every time is that at the right end, you are still walking about your opinion, but your faces are covered by four boxes of other recommended songs. Sorry for interfering in a stupid technical matter like this, but is it technically possible that you extend the videos by 10 more seconds only and that the video boxes appear only after you have finished and closed the screen with your hands. Just finish your talk to the last word and then put the promotion to the other related videos. Again so sorry, but we really want to see your faces while you are giving your final assessment and farewell words.

This was meant to be a song for Nanci Griffith. The songwriter called Julie Gold was a personal friend of Nanci. Julie Gold en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julie_Gold was working as a secretary at the time for HBO and writing songs in her free time. Gold's friend, Christine Lavin, introduced Nanci Griffith and gave her the song. The song was written in 1985. Here the songwriter singing her song th-cam.com/video/F4q9JUMF0oc/w-d-xo.html
    -
It was first recorded by Nanci for her 1987 album, "Lone Star State of Mind". It was a success in the alternative market. The song became a sleeper hit in Ireland, spending 17 non-consecutive weeks in the Irish Top 30 during 1988 without doing much, and finally peaking at number nine before dropping out of the chart. So when it came time for the single to be issued for the American market, Nanci Griffith was considered a very small name and up and coming artist with no hits to boast. Plus Nanci had gotten the reputation of being too rebellious and with extreme left wing ideas of justice in almost all her songs, and was hated by the conservative country market who were and probably still are right wing. It would have failed if Nanci's 1987 version was released. Radios wouldn't play it. Actually alternative and college radios were putting it and most country radios ignored her.
    -
So three years later, in 1990, it was offered to Bette Midler, an already established name, and she had a great hit with it. But fans of the song pinpoint that this was a steal. They remained attached to saying it is Nanci's song and they prefer Nanci's version because of her beautiful voice and more genuine performance. But most of the times money wins, so now people think it is Bette Midler song. But I ave put both and you be the judge whether you prefer Bette Midler or the original Nanci Griffith one.

I agree. Wow. Emmylou Harris. Both Nanci Griffith and Emmylou Harris are so underrated and didn't get the real recognition they deserved. At the time there was a clear bias against female voices in country music as most attention and hits came from men. So they disregarded those female jewels.

I love the red boots story. We were a poor family, but my parents (born in the 30s and 40s) spared no expense on shoes and socks, and church clothes.
    That has carried with me.
I can personally vouch that Nancy was a great person. She meant what she said and sang about. She was a delightful, smart person. She did not get the acclaim she deserved.

This magical song has had so many covers. Besides Nanci Griffith and Better Midler, look how many people have sung it. Just a few. The great Cliff Richard, the amazing Judy Collins and Donna Summer, the Byrds, Elaine Page, Kathy Mattea. There was the charity "Magdalene Survivors Together" in Ireland, all musical versions by Richard Clayderman and by James Last. There were even cruel parodies. The song has been translated to many other languages including Spanish and Norwegian.

So appropriate for these corona days in 2020 singing "God is watching us from a distance" Or when she sings pleading for "no guns, no wars" or "no hunger, no disease" as if praying to be saved from corona . This is heart-drenching. This song never gets old. God bless the writer Julie Gold and God bless the singer Nanci Griffith. This song should be re-released with revenues going to charity for sufferers of COVID-19

Beautiful footage of songwriter Julie Gold talking about the song. th-cam.com/video/xZv-AkG68TE/w-d-xo.html Julie Gold has stated that she believes in an immanent and beneficent God, and also thinks that people have a right to interpret the song any way they want, as with all art. She has stated that the song is about the difference between how things appear to be and how they really are. Gold had sent the song to so many artists and record companies but none wanted to record it. Griffith had answered that she loved it so much the moment she heard it and that she really wanted to hear it performed personally by Gold herself. Thus was established a good relationship between the two with Griffith being the first to record "From a Distance".

Yes. Bette Midler had a hit with it. but I find Nanci's voice and performance was much better. Actually at the time Nanci Griffith a new upcoming artist. Her friend songwriter Julie Gold had given Nanci this song to sing in her small sets, with a few attending. She enjoyed popularity with alternative followers. But when it came to the actual release, her name was not deemed enough for a sure hit, so Julie Gold agreed that Bette Midler sings it. th-cam.com/video/lN4AcFzxtdE/w-d-xo.html

@@curtisgough2682 Sure The nostalgic value. Plus that Bette Midler made a perfect version for the market release. Nanci's was always meant for the live feel. She has so many videos of the live thing. For a definitive recorded version you go to Midler. The magic behind Nanci though was that people were also taken by her physical beauty and childlike innocence.

This song has been covered by so many people that it's hard to be a fair judge of her voice. But I like it. As she does sort of sound like emmylou Harris.

    • @onewxrldmusic7303
      @onewxrldmusic7303 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes The song is timeless. So it would sound great by any genre and by any artist. But it was a Nanci Griffith song because nobody wanted to sing it because it was religious and old-fashioned despite Julie Gold searching for singers for two years. Except for Nanci who heard it once and just embraced it whole-heartedly and never left it. Nanci liked the song so much she was even hesitant to record it. She said she would always love that Julie Gold sings it herself. She thought the song was so sacred only the writer could give it justice. But Gold insisted and prevailed. So it became a Nanci song. \And even tens of artists sing it, it will still always be Nanci's song.
      -
But if you want to be fair about Nanci's voice (regardless of the song she sings), check for example "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness" a song by John Prine who died just recently from COVID19. th-cam.com/video/QNBeP8dzYdg/w-d-xo.html I always cry when I hear her sing this. And you can't believe how angry she gets at injustice in her song in 1989 "It's a Hard Life" th-cam.com/video/a9lUG4gBjSE/w-d-xo.html

There was a charity version of the song by "Magdalene Survivors Together" in a touching version about the so called laundry houses for fallen women like prostitutes or sexually promiscuous women or pregnant women out of wedlock to "save" them from further harm. This started in the 18th century until mid 20th century. Women were protestant and later Roman Catholic as well. Women instead if being protected were abuse and worked like slaves in laundries. The institutions were named after the Biblical figure Mary Magdalene, in earlier centuries characterized as a reformed prostitute. By 1900, there were more than 300 asylums in England and more than 20 in Scotland. There were similar institutions in Ireland, the US, Sweden, Australia etc with similar horror stories. Only after so many public exposes did the institutions close after the 1950s. For details see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magdalene_asylum
    -
The charity song in Ireland was made to help the women who had been trapped into the laundries. Artists chipping in included Sinéad O'Connor, Tommy Fleming, Brian Kennedy, Daniel O'Donnell, Ann Scott, Moya Brennan, Charlie Landsborough, Patrick Sheehy, Lumiere and the Scottish Glasgow Gospel Choir. Here is their version th-cam.com/video/zyQ8G53RAxo/w-d-xo.html

    FROM A DISTANCE
    by NANCI GRIFFITH
    written by JULIE GOLD
    *
    Lyrics
    **
From a distance the world looks blue and green
And the snow capped mountains white
From a distance the ocean meets the stream
And the eagle takes to flight
    **
From a distance there is harmony
And it echoes through the land
    It's the voice of hope
    It's the voice of peace
It's the voice of every man
    **
From a distance we all have enough
And no one is in need
And there are no guns, no bombs and no disease
    No hungry mouths to feed
    **
From a distance we are instruments
    Marching in a common band
    Playing songs of hope
    Playing songs of peace
They are the songs of every man
    **
    God is watching us
    God is watching us
God is watching us from a distance
    **
From a distance you look like my friend
Even though we are at war
From a distance I just cannot comprehend
    What all this fighting's for
From a distance there is harmony
And it echoes through the land
And it's the hope of hopes
    It's the love of loves
It's the heart of every man
    It's the hope of hopes
    It's the love of loves
This is the song for every man
    **
    God is watching us
    God is watching us
God is watching us from a distance

The song remains controversial to this day for its pacifist universal sentiments. Particularly at times of war or in social justice or immigration issues. People argue if it is a religious song because of mention of God or it is a worldly left-wing political song for issues that surround humanity and various countries like war and peace, like hunger and disease. Gun advocates hate her for singing about no guns. Atheists attack her for the religiosity. Even Christians were up in arms particularly about the word "instruments". Julie Gold wrote in the lyrics "From a distance we are instruments, Marching in a common band". This one word, "instruments" created so much opposition. People argued we are not robots run by some higer power. We have independent free thought and free will. Why are you saying we are instruments of whoever as if this was an insult to human nature and freedoms. Many singers doing the song would replace the word "instrument" by some other word. The songwriter Julie Gold was asked even grilled about this. She insisted that she didn't want to change the word at all and even when Bette Midler sang it, she had to keep the word to get the song which put her under criticism with many targeting her for singing it like that. But the word remained although you will still come across people who refuse to include the word "instruments" when they are singing it.
