Another part of a video series from Wordonfire.org. Bishop Barron will be commenting on subjects from modern day culture. For more visit www.wordonfire.org/
Father, I am so delighted to have found you on TH-cam. I get so much out of your comments. You are bringing me back to Catholicism and all its richness, and intellectual depth. Your dedication to this medium is the antidote to the trouble the Church has fallen into over the last decade. You address the questions, you do not run from the tough stuff. I am so glad your voice is being heard. Stay strong and courageous!
Wowww so cool thank you bishop Barron , love your videos just Discovered them about a month ago been watching them like crazy almost all up to date with your videos, Truely a blessing to me , thank you 😊
Wow! I've only been a devotee of Father Barron for a few months, and yet here are many more, just now turning on to what God is doing though this ministry. Please pray for Father Barron and the Word on Fire ministry.
Keep 'em coming, Fr. Barron! 'TIs always a great day to see "New video commentary by Fr. Barron" pop up in my inbox. God bless you and the great work you're doing at Mundelein and through Word on Fire, TH-cam, etc.
Thank you for looking into all of these themes and motifs! As soon as I saw the film I was struck with the constant imagery and references to Christianity/Catholicism, and I find it truly fascinating to explore these ideas.
I love this, Fr. Barron! It's not a stretch at all. And I'm a huge fan of Caryll Houselander, so was fascinated to see this connection. Keep up the good work. You help expand our minds and our spirits.
Thank you for always being there with the Catholic perspective, Father. Some would never have deigned to soil themselves with such "worldly" concerns. You have redeemed so much of the "secular" world for so many of us. Thank you, Father Barron!
I personally think that converting classic biblical themes to sate modern interests is the best way to meet the challenge of the New Evangelization. Really, excellent ideas! I'm going to have to see that again, now...
Over a great part of 62 years I had become a skeptic of most everything. I left and returned to my Catholic faith but unfortunately had been touched in a negative way by my loss of innocence. I had a lot of trouble trusting that people are who they profess to be. I've been listening to and watching Fr. Barron for a while now and I have come to the conclusion that this man is genuine.
I really enjoyed watching your commentary, Fr. Barron. Thank you for sharing your work (all of it). I know you are a very busy priest but if possible I would love the opportunity to discuss additional undertones which seemed to appear obvious to me. Thank you again!
Father Barron, you are a genius! I didn't pick up any of this from Skyfall. Modern society prides itself so much on being secular, but your commentaries on pop culture prove again and again that God is inescapably in our hearts, in our minds, and in our world, whether we like to admit that or not. God bless you!
Just when my I thought my enjoyment of Skyfall could not be more complete, Fr. Barron's review added additional depth and nuance to the movie experience. He may also have mentioned the successor to Dench's "M" who is younger yes, but old school in habit, form and substance. Excellent review of a memorable movie.
I looked into it since you mentioned it. There is an book published by Project Gutenburg that addresses priest holes in general, and one chapter that mentions specifically that they existed in Scotland. Secret Chambers and Hiding Places Chapter XII by Allan Fea Project Gutenburg
Fr. Barron I'm a 16 year old catholic male in colorado. I just wanna say your my idol in faith. I whent through a tough time with my old church where the youth minister called me stupid, lazy, and judgemental, and treated me poorly due to me being democrat. Just, thank you, love you (not in a creepy way) and thanks for being here for evreyone like me. You're a modern saint sir. God Bless
You can also make the comparison that the relationship with James Bond and Dame Judy Denches character is that of mother Kali and Hinduism. As James Bond never waivers in her support for" mum", even though she gave the order to kill him. A bond is a bit battle scarred but there relationship is strong, and always for the greater good.
You should do a review of Millers Crossing. There's some very interesting themes in that movie and I would be interested to know whether you picked up on them.
Thanks for pointing out the Catholic elements - I only caught the priest-hole reference while watching the film and didn't make those other connections. I might add, too, that the film is beautiful to look at - particularly the scenes in Shanghai - thanks to Roger Deakins' cinematography. Just stunning.
Father, I REALLY hope that you make a commentary on the movie 'Cloud Atlas'. I just watched it and it was by far one of the best movies i've seen in a long time. The film has spiritual themes scattered throughout it, and although its views are a bit secular, they are clearly a reflection of the human desire for the transcendental. This is the perfect film for you to make a youtube video on, and I would love to hear your thoughts on it.
I would love to see Fr. Barron with his own weekly movie review show, maybe team up with Michael Medved or something on one of the main networks. At the very least, you should have your own airtime on EWTN.
Hang on. Skyfall is not by Ian Fleming. It was written long after his demise by someone who didn't know anyone you mentioned. And Sir Fleming said he named James Bond after the book on his shelf at Goldeneye (his home in Jamaica, just east of St. Anne's Bay/Ocho Rios): Birds of the West Indies by James Bond. You can still buy that book on Amazon. It's in its fourth edition. It has hummingbirds on the cover, and if you've ever been in Goldeneye, you know the hummingbirds are all over the place. So I'm not sure where you got the intel Bishop Barron, but Ian Fleming has nothing to do with your interpretations of the movie Skyfall, and there is no Bond family in Scotland that has anything to do with the naming of James Bond 007. Sorry. =) It is a well thought out logic you have there, and very inspiring. Thank you for the other good stuff in there. I'm a gonna stay here though. Good luck there!
Always enjoy your videos. I've stolen my best homily material from them. Have you seen Life of Pi yet? It wasn't on my to do list, but a parishioner recommended it, and I think you might find some grist for the mill here. Peace
I would mention having just seen it also. The villians deep need to strike out at Dame Judi referencing her as Mother! Refering to he and Bond as her Children. He's like a fallen angelic being. Bonds need to protect her is striking to. It reminds you almost of a Milton poem I once read. Watered into modern interest.
Dear Father...Thank you for the wonderful work you are doing Father...Father I have two doubts? I was born a Catholic and I got into serious faith just 4 years ago (am 22 now) I tend to be more of a perfectionist and at times the term "Fun" seems to be contradictory to the faith...Father what does "Fun" really mean? The second is that when I watch a movie at times sexual scenes come over and I tend to feel guilty when I view it, what's the problem here father? and do they make u impure?
He doesn't break the water with the flare, he uses it to see where the hole was that he made when he shot the ice. But I still see your point. Also the storyline ideas are nothing to do with Fleming, since he never write a book called Skyfall or has any scenes in his books which are put into this film, it was an original plot line. But still, an interesting look at the film.
He's not calling it intentionally placed there. A whole lot of tropes that find their origins within Catholicism are so deeply ingrained in our culture that we use them without even thinking of their origins. It might not have been deliberately done (unless the world became Catholic last night ^_^), but it is still there, and it's worth pointing it out to show that the Church quite literally built Western Civilisation.
Coincidentally, I watched your The Silence commentary immediately before this. How interesting that, in Britain, in the same century, priests had "priest-holes" to hide in to evade persecution and death, while in Japan, Christian laity were dying for their faith and priests were apostacising!
We are promised that the gates of hell will not prevail against the church Christ founded, but this old institution is getting closer and closer to the hell-fire. Thank God for priests like Father Barron!
Father, I would ask you a totally out of context question: Is playing Card Games, Like Magic: The Gathering, a kind of sin? I am asking this because you seems to separate very well the Fantasy on the Culture to the reality of the Gods Teachings. I will be very glad to hear yout position on this theme. Thank you for your time.
I can't wait for Fr. Barron's review of Deep Throat, "Well, what we have here are the obvious Christian themes of surrender and acceptance. One need look no further than the name of the lead character, Linda Lovelace... We know that Love is central to all Christian teaching, so the influence of Christianity here is undeniable." If he can turn a Bond movie into a work of Christian inspiration, Deep Throat can't be far behind. I've not seen either movie, but his reviews will suffice ; )
Two problems here: 1. Scotland and England were totally separate countries in Elizabethan times (there was no "Britain" until the Act of Union in 1707), so Elizabeth I's police state had no say about what went on in Scotland. The English protestant reformation and the Scottish protestant reformation were separate and different historical events. 2. What is a priest doing going to "the movies"? ;-)
By order of his Bishop, Father Barron's job is to evangelize the Culture. Thus he has to engage in it as did Jesus himself and the 12 Apostles. They went into pagan towns to convert and preach the Good News, Father Barron too has to do this, go into the culture. However, unlike people of less courage, myself included and maybe you we stay in prayer and do not engage in mass culture, it would scare us. But nothing seems to scare Father, he can look the devil in the eye and call him by name.
You do realise there is no connection between Fleming and Skyfall apart from Bond and M.. Skyfall is a 2012 creation by Mendes, Craig and Eon. Also Elizabeth I would have no jurisdiction in 16th century Scotland. They were two separate countries back then.Interesting theories though.
Well, baptism means literally "to overwhelm", and is considered a foreshadowing of Christ's death (going down) and resurrection (coming up). Hence why water is poured three times in Catholic celebrations (never been to a full dunk, so no comment on those). So, it actually does fit pretty well (and not being a Catholic, I'm not surprised you're not familiar with this sort of theological meaning).
And... here's one he missed-- in the movie ELIZABETH staring Cate Blanchet (1998), Daniel Craig played a minor role as a Catholic priest sent to assasinate Elizabeth I. Anyone for irony here?
You don't need a priest to answer either question. First up, fun is very Catholic. Anyone who says you can't have fun to be a good Catholic is just trolling you. We're all for the good things in the world, so long as that which is best, namely God, is always loved above all other things. G.K. Chesterton loved to do this sort of thing, and for a more modern example, check out Catholic Memes on Facebook, Tumblr and so on.
Ian Fleming named the character after an ornithologist named James Bond, and not a catholic family that he knew when he was a child. There is an interview on youtube where he mentions it. Additionally, the character of James bond is an amalgamation of many secret agent types that Fleming had met throughout WWII. Indeed, much of Bond even comes from Fleming's own character. For example, both were Commanders in the Royal Navy... I feel you are grasping at straws.
As for the sex scenes, they don't make you impure unless you let them. Only when you accept the devil's hint that sex like that (i.e. unmarried one night stands) is OK do you sin yourself. Believe me, I've had the same questions on purity and sin (similar background, similar journey). If you've got a solid faith, I'd say you'd be fine. And you'll probably hear the same from a priest. After all, Fr Barron saw it, didn't he? ^_^
Small problem: Scotland is not known for recusant families and priests' hiding holes in Catholic manor houses. That was exclusively in England because of the way Henry's 'reformation' proceeded. The Protestant Reformation in Scotland had entirely different characteristics. No hiding holes - as far as I know. The great thing about these talks is that - like any university professor (which Fr Barron is) - he sometimes gives us some of his more relaxed reflections. It's good to be in his class!
This entire franchise has gone down the tubes. It needs to be passed over to Mel Gibson for directing and Jim Caviezel for the new James Bond. :-) Return the Bond business back to its rightful owners, the Catholics :-)
Thanks so much for those kind words. I'm afraid, however, that I'm not yet a saint. That's why you have to pray for me. God bless you, friend.
Thanks for those very encouraging remarks! Please keep me in prayer.
"money penny"
"yes?'
"Pass me the bible, catholic edition please"
I've done dozens of them. Take a look through the list of my videos. In fact, the very first video I did was a review of Scorsese's The Departed.
That's right...which makes it even better!
Well that's interesting, there is a James Bond movie called "the world is not enough"
Father, I am so delighted to have found you on TH-cam. I get so much out of your comments. You are bringing me back to Catholicism and all its richness, and intellectual depth. Thank you for this. Amazing how great writers deliver on complex themes that intersect our faith. Nicely exposed here.
Yes!
Keep 'em coming, Fr. Barron! 'TIs always a great day to see "New video commentary by Fr. Barron" pop up in my inbox. God bless you and the great work you're doing at Mundelein and through Word on Fire, TH-cam, etc.
True enough about Scotland and recusant manor houses, but there were some, including the one belonging to the Bonds.
Excellent commentary father. Thank you.
Thank you for looking into all of these themes and motifs! As soon as I saw the film I was struck with the constant imagery and references to Christianity/Catholicism, and I find it truly fascinating to explore these ideas.

Very good commentary. It never crossed my mind to make a religious connection, thanks for giving me something more to consider.
I personally think that converting classic biblical themes to sate modern interests is the best way to meet the challenge of the New Evangelization. Really, excellent ideas! I'm going to have to see that again, now...
I just watched Skyfall for the 3rd time. Awesome movie. Awesome insight by Father Barron! Thank you.
Now I know why I like the Bond brand. Keep up the great work you do Fr.;you inspire many of us not to concede to the world.
Dei gratia,
CM
Wonderful connections and symbalism!

Father you mentioned the Bond family motto, "The World is not Enough." This is also the title of another Bond film from 1999.
I love the Bishop's movie reviews.
Fr.Barron you are an example of logical Catholicism of which I try to live by as a catholic.
I looked into it since you mentioned it. There is an book published by Project Gutenburg that addresses priest holes in general, and one chapter that mentions specifically that they existed in Scotland.

Didnt see this. tq Father. Great review.
It's a deal: prayer offered.

I'm a 16 year old catholic male in colorado. I just wanna say your my idol in faith. Well thank-you. That's very interesting. I'll look into it.
Says you. Given the many other Christian associations in the film, why not?
AWESOME!!
I like your analysis of "M". Thanks
Impressive commentary!

I don't know if you're a saint, father Barron, but you certainly are an example to many people. God Bless.
So recusant Catholic manor houses, priest holes, and Catholic chapels existed "long before Jesus"??!
Hello Father; I'm just wondering, where did you get the bust of Dante? I've been looking for one.
Well i know you aren't yet, but what I meant was you're one of the most holy people i can think of right now. I will
god bless
Father, I REALLY hope that you make a commentary on the movie 'Cloud Atlas'. I just watched it and it was by far one of the best movies i've seen in a long time. This is the perfect film for you to make a youtube video on, and I would love to hear your thoughts on it.
I hope Father Barron does a commentary on Trigun.
@Christopher Price Anime might be a stretch, but Trigun definitely has themes of balance
I would love to see Fr. Barron with his own weekly movie review show, maybe team up with Michael Medved or something on one of the main networks. At the very least, you should have your own airtime on EWTN.

Are many priests big movie buffs?
Depends on the priest, just like with laypeople. A chaplain I knew didn't like the very idea of watching movies, but then you have Bishop Barron here.
Bond is asked what his hobby, not his motto. Resurrection is his hobby. Something he does on the side. So great.
Always enjoy your videos. I've stolen my best homily material from them.
Have you seen Life of Pi yet? It wasn't on my to do list, but a parishioner recommended it, and I think you might find some grist for the mill here. Peace
Wasn't there a shoot out in a small church (in the movie)?
Mind = blown.
Also, I never realized Javier Bardem is in everything. Did you notice that?
I would mention having just seen it also. The villians deep need to strike out at Dame Judi referencing her as Mother! Refering to he and Bond as her Children. He's like a fallen angelic being. Actually, James Bond was named after an ornithologist whom Fleming greatly admired.
Fr. Barron, Who was your favorite Bond?
On the one hand, Fleming did not write SkyFall. However, the scriptwriters often put references to Fleming's life in their scripts
Damn - Father Barron really does his research.
My understanding is that Bond was modeled on William Stevenson, a very well known Canadian spy during World War II.
That's cool. I didn't know that about English history.
You probably know this, but one of the Bond films is called the World is Not Enough.
Just thought I would say. :^)
The full title of that book is "Catholic Birds of The West Indies".
He's not calling it intentionally placed there. Indeed! Ecclesiastical rank is never a definitive bar to gauge one’s friendship with God
We are promised that the gates of hell will not prevail against the church Christ founded, but this old institution is getting closer and closer to the hell-fire. Thank God for priests like Father Barron!

Thank you for your time.
The real name of the spy James Bond is actually Richard Fleming. A relative of Ian.
Father, why not do a commentary on the election?
I can't wait for Fr. Barron's review of Deep Throat, "Well, what we have here are the obvious Christian themes of surrender and acceptance. One need look no further than the name of the lead character, Linda Lovelace... We know that Love is central to all Christian teaching, so the influence of Christianity here is undeniable."
If he can turn a Bond movie into a work of Christian inspiration, Deep Throat can't be far behind. I've not seen either movie, but his reviews will suffice ; )
This video is infinitely more interesting and coherent than the movie was.
2. What is a priest doing going to "the movies"? ;-)
Not motto, Father, hobby.
Bond: Everybody needs a hobby.
Silva: So what's yours?
Bond: Resurrection.
You DO realize that Skyfall was a 100% original story from EON films, not based on the original Ian Fleming novels, right?
By order of his Bishop, Father Barron's job is to evangelize the Culture. Thus he has to engage in it as did Jesus himself and the 12 Apostles. They went into pagan towns to convert and preach the Good News, Father Barron too has to do this, go into the culture. They were seperate countrys, however mary, queen of scotts may as well have been a puppet queen.
Fr Barron is simply musing on a few ideas that occurred to him seeing this movie. He's not making any outright claims for the various allusions.
It took me awhile to realize that I am a 007 fan.
He did not break the ice with the flaier he used it to se where the hole in the ice was
Do one on The Godfather. That's a biggie.
Yeah but is there a cool chase scene?
And... here's one he missed-- in the movie ELIZABETH staring Cate Blanchet (1998), Daniel Craig played a minor role as a Catholic priest sent to assasinate Elizabeth I. Anyone for irony here?

You should definitely comment on Bronies. It's a thought...

You should watch Death Note.
