I think that this is the best 80s inspired modern album that's been done yet, and it's really impressive that it's self-produced and nearly entirely self-written. So, a lot of the album is very tongue-in-cheek about fame, identity, and false ways we can see ourselves: "Weird World" is about how she used to view herself more as a pop star and tried to keep up with others in the music industry but realized that was making her angry and bitter and has learned to embrace her weirdness and be true to herself. The "Girl with No Face" is Allie X, the singer and not the person. She has no face because she's just a voice on a song that you're listening to. This song is Allie grappling with the idea that this "girl with no face" isn't really her but this is largely the version of herself that people are familiar with. Allie has said that "Off with Her Tits" is one she doesn't want to address explicitly but she thinks people would probably be correct in guessing what it's about. To me, it reads like a woman who is uncomfortable having breasts due to unwanted male attention. "John and Jonathan" is about two actual fans she met at a Meet and Greet who are in a relationship. "Galina" is about someone you've come to rely on leaving you without something you need. It was inspired because Allie X has eczema and she used to see a naturopath named Galina who had a special recipe for a cream that worked really well. Then one day Allie went to the clinic and found out Galina had retired and also lost her memory, and she no longer could get the cream that helped her. "Hardware Software" was apparently just made for fun. All of the words were improvised, and Allie says it was probably because she had been spending too much time in front of a computer. It made her laugh a lot by herself while she was making this one. "Black Eye" is definitely a metaphor. Allie has a very fragile body due to an autoimmune disorder and she often pushes herself to do things she probably shouldn't for her career, and that's what this song is about. It's a kind of tongue-in-cheek, it's just a little black eye, no big deal, push through it, bring it on. "You Slept on Me" was literally inspired by tweets saying "You're sleeping on Allie X" and she just wanted to have fun with that. "Saddest Smile" is about Allie having a deeply ingrained belief that happiness can't exist without pain behind it. She says it's a belief she'd like to get rid of and has talked about in therapy, but it's been very hard for her to shake. "Staying Power" was written after she had an incredibly rough year and she realized that she has really high pain tolerance and that she considers that a superpower, so this is her being sarcastic about that idea and her rough year. "Truly Dreams" was inspired by drag queens and the idea of living your fantasy.
Totally agree on the 80's take! Feels so authentic/fresh and real even though we've been FLOODED with it! and omg thank you! LOVED reading all the info about the songs 🖤
Well, technically it's nearly self produced as well. Justin Meldal-Johnsen, mostly known for working with Paramore and other rock acts, did some additional production and played instruments on all tracks. John and Johnathan was also co-produced by this other person. But Allie was the lead producer, it's mostly her work, which is super impressive. She started showing her production skills on Collxtion I, but she kinda gave up on it later, for some reason.
My personal album of the year 🤍 every song takes me to another dimension. her sonorous voice, interesting instrumental, weird in a good way lyrics. love Allie so much. With each album, her work becomes more colorful, hypnotic and iconic. so glad you made a reaction! Black eye and Galina my favorites
Early AOTY contender for me! Like Slayyyter’s Starf⭐️cker, it’s so cohesive. The fact that it’s all self-produced is a real testament to Allie X’s talent.
I had all the singles on repeat for dayyyys when each one dropped. And now that the album is out, it hasn't been turned off. She produced all the songs using old gear that they used in the 80s so she could get an authentic retro sound. Truly Dreams reminds me of ABBA and made me cry when I first heard it. It's one of the most hopeful songs on the album and I love that she wrapped it up with that. Especially when there are songs like Black Eye which is talking about how the world is going to beat you down over and over again, so you might as well take the punches. Girl With No Face is the ghost or entity who she says helped her write the album, kind of a vengeful version of herself who is seeking justice in this weird world. Allie is a queen!! This album will be hard to top for me 🖤
I'm absolutley obsessed with this album and I love how it sounds like some weird combination of Madonna, Pat Benatar, Kate Bush, and Siouxsie & The Banshees lol
I’m glad you reacted to this. It’s my album of the year. Even if Hardware Software and Truly Dreams are kinda weak, in the context of the album everything works perfectly. Admirable that she didn’t follow the TikTok trend of doing really short songs. These are produced exquisitely and fully thought out songs. I’ve loved her since her debut but I did fall off a little with Cape God. It just didn’t click with me except for a couple of songs. You should definitely react to Collxtion 1 and 2 and Super Sunset EP and Private Life…though, so expect more 4 minute songs!
Omg, so I just ran into a short clip of her singing the song “I’m the Girl with No Face” live on IG & was SO obsessed with her sound..I look her up on YT to find out more only to find you already did a whole album reaction??!?! Girl….your taste in music🤌🏽 You’re literally always 1 full step ahead, i swear!! I need to follow more closely 🤣🙌🏽♥️ The same thing happened with Chapel Roan & I was like oh snap sis been knewwwwww the music queens over here, werk😭😭🙌🏽💁🏽♂️💕
Since you like this album, you should really check out "CollXtion" I & II, "Cape God" (the album that you reacted to) is quite different from the rest of her discography in my opinion.
In love with this album!! My dream/weird girl synthpop album! This was produced for 4 years by herself, with real synthesizers, this is why it sounds so raw and 80s.
Great review. I just saw her live in San Francisco. She lead off with Bitc*, I mean confident she's has for this album to lead off her show w her biggest hit says it all. And she delivered on the promise by the end of the nite. Unbelievable live performance, the entire crowd was so pumped by the end. As soon as we walked out I was already online looking to see her next show. I took my younger brother it was his first concert he was so taken aback and said for the rest of my life I'll always be grateful my first concert was seeing her.
Weird World, Jon and Jonathan, Staying Power, Galina and You Slept On Me are my favorites! 🖤 The album is gold and the fact that she self-produced and wrote it is so incredible. If she doesn't get multiple Juno nominations there is something wrong.
I was waiting for someone to react to this album very glad that you did ! so far this is my album of the year I love the production on the whole album and I love allies vocals sm they feel so theatrical and grand and often dark too black eye and galina are some of my favs but I love the whole project and the authenticity 80s sound
'Off With Her Tits' is some good old body dysmorphia/gender dysphoria where you have this supposedly amazing woman's body and you're like this isn't me, I don't want it, I don't care if other people think it looks good, please just get rid of it somehow I feel like an alien in my own body. I speak from very personal experience there - the 'ideal' hourglass figure stacked with a 12F (34G) chest and it was utterly loathsome to me. Literally 'be(ing) a stick' is the only thing that soothes it. And at 5'7 and 48kg I'm STILL an 8D lmao. So yeah this song, besides being probably the best in her entire discography, speaks to me and many others on a very personal level
I had never seen your Cape God reaction, but I watched it after this. You really enjoyed that album but it’s funny you didn’t recall it all. Do you listen to albums after you react to them much or do you just add random bangers which really grabbed you to playlists?
If I really love it I do, or I just take my favourites, but like Cape God it seems a lot get left behind simply cause I just don't have enough time in life to listen to everything more than once 😭 Usually my top ten of the year are the ones that I've listened to lots and lotssss
if you havent already i think you should react to Chelsea Wolfe’s newest LP and The Last Dinner Party’s debut LP .. both are amazing albums of this year

also the album was fully recorded using analog equipments and instruments, which definitely helped to create that pure 80's vibe
