@@UnravelingthePattern it's not even a hope in my book, it's a sure thing! Even for the books themselves most new readers get easily lost in all the information needed to fully understand what's going on! I recently re-watched the 1984 animated film "Nausicaä of the valley of the wind" and was struck by how similar it is in its story structure to WOT, they both have a prophecy of someone being born to save the world that was destroyed. Watching the intro to that film; the way it gives the backstory through ancient tapestries, really made me excited to see how they'll go about telling the backstory of the world in WOT for the upcoming tv show.

@@UnravelingthePattern read the manga that's where its at haha, its a great film but it is also the first Studio Ghibli film so it hasn't aged particularly well. The manga however is properly one of the greatest graphic novels ever made. Ghiblis second film "Laputa castle in the sky" also have a really cool intro that could easily be viewed as an age of legend worlds downfall, just doesn't have the same mythical "chosen one" twist that nausicaä does. Here is a cool video essay about Laputas intro: th-cam.com/video/c2AyOsiEhts/w-d-xo.html
Animation is truly unique when used as a story device, so thinking about the WOT series I'm really excited to see if they are going to show the worlds backstory in those few first minutes of episode 1 or just hint to exposition throughout the series. If they decide to tell a short version of events that led to 998 NE, I wonder whether they will go for animation or liveaction.

This is a good one, I like it.
One thing that I doubt was ever answered, or ever will be, if it in fact has not, is how exactly the other source of power was discovered, and how they knew it didn't have the same male/female barrier that the One Power had.
Like, how? Honestly, I wish the information was out there.

Yeah, so even then, in a world that didn't know of Shai'tan, how did they discover its power?
How did they test it in any way to have learned even that it was nonbinary if they weren't bound to Shai'tan in their ignorance of it?
I was gonna presume maybe that even tho Shai'tan was imprisoned, not all of the True Power was imprisoned with it, and that's how it was eventually discovered, maybe even in some similar way to however the One Power was discovered in the First Age. However, knowing that True Power requires permission from Shai'tan, how would they have been able to learn about it?
How would they have linked that power back to the prison and figures to drill into this metaphysical space to breach it and gain access to more of the power?
Shai'tan was imprisoned and couldn't touch the world, yet presumably part of its power existed out of the prison, a power he is connected to.
Is there a premise here that the True Power that existed in the world was cut off from Shai'tan and perhaps that bypassed the barrier of needing its permission?
Maybe. It's just about the only thing I can even guess at.
Then from there perhaps they followed the trail back until they noticed it disappeared and figured that they had to bore into said metaphysical space to find more?
Afterall, we can assume there wasn't much True Power available, otherwise there'd have been no need to bore into anything for more of it, one would assume.
Perhaps some of these details will be uncovered further in my re-read, but I feel like not much of this is explored, which is sensible, but also sad.

I always presumed that at the end of the last age time reset. Like the big crunch of the universe, it snaps back and resets, so there wouldn't be a "previous" hole in any given age when they drill into it.
Tho I could be wrong in that thought.
Afterall, even if you go with that description you'd need to find what happened the first time. I mean, yes, there's always been the "there are no beginnings or endings to the Wheel of Time", but if something is created that means there's a first. Right? Idk.
But yeah, a thin spot in the pattern works well enough.

I’ve always wondered, it time repeats itself and the first age is based on our world, how far back in our past do we go for the first age? Would it only go back to for example the the Roman Empire or all the way back to the Stone Age and the beginning of humanity? Does humanity have a beginning in the WOT world? I could see that happening with maybe the 6th and 7th age being incredibly long and ending with an almost complete destruction of the planet that then leads to life forming again. Or does it not go back that much? I mean if it’s cyclical there can’t be hard resets can there?

I have tried to get Sanderson and others to respond about the 30th Anniversary Edition of The Eye of the World. He added a chapter to the beginning of the book. It just seems wrong to me, adding stuff to an already finished novel! I will be eternally grateful to Brandon for finishing The Wheel of Time, but I would rather have seen him try a new novella or book that comes after A New Spring, which Jordan always planned to do! Thoughts?

    • @UnravelingthePattern
      @UnravelingthePattern  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Just to be clear, you mean Robert Jordan added the new chapter to The Eye of the World, not Brandon Sanderson, right? I'm pretty sure RJ did it because TOR publishing made him do it when they attempted to split the first book into two halves for YA readers. I personally think that new Ravens prologue is pretty awful, but it does help to fill in a lot of these details.
As for Brandon writing another prequel or other WOT books, I think that it is wise that he only finished the main series. I'm pretty sure there weren't enough notes left from RJ to properly write the other prequels and outrigger novels he had planned. It's really not Brandon's world, and I think it's best to leave it alone. Especially because Jordan's estate (ie. his wife) doesn't want any more written.
Finally, I think it's unfair to ask Brandon Sanderson to write more WOT books because he has enough on his plate with his own books. He's a very prolific writer and I think it's best that he stays away from writing in other people's worlds now that he has finished the main WOT series.

@@UnravelingthePattern actually, he said himself that he wouldn't work anymore in WoT, exactly for the reason you bring, that there are not enough notes left to make a full story. He even went as far as saying that IF the Estate was to change idea and decide to add more stories, he would leave the chance to another author. You can do a search, if I recall the title of his video is something like "will I write more WoT books".

@@UnravelingthePattern They are probably misremembering stuff they read in the Big White Book. It suggests that *probably* no Aes Sedai from the Age of Legends survived (which would explain the loss of various weaves and Talents). But even then, it's uncertain, and it suggests that the Aes Sedai in Rhuidean at the Jendai Prophecy may be surviving AoL Aes Sedai. Given that this is an in-universe account, we can probably discard the uncertainty and conclude that the Rhuidean Aes Sedai were absolutely AoL Aes Sedai.
Also, I wouldn't say the White Tower founders had no direct link to AoL Aes Sedai, though that might be quibbling over the meaning of "direct". We can probably rule out that group including AoL Aes Sedai, but I see no reason to be confident it didn't include Aes Sedai who, say, had been trained directly by AoL survivors.
