So many people say “musicals don’t adapt well on screen” that’s NOT true! The problem is the directors they pick. The hired director that dorn know anything about musicals like the director of the film adaptation of dear Evan Hansen. Lin understand what makes theatre magical and how to translate that! That is something so special about Lin-Manuel Miranda, he's always surrounded by other talented people, he knows he can't do everything alone, so why not reclute a group of people that are incredible in what they are and share knowledge and talent 🥺 so humble and clever ✨
@@linndylau I feel like that is a very theatre mindset.... I don't have much experience like AT all.... Mr. Miranda, I want to thank you for several things. I am in my 80's, and I heard of the show, Rent but never desired to see it. Now I watch all the TH-cam presentations, old and new, I can find. I never knew who Jonathan Larson was, and through your outstanding direction and Andrew's acting, you have brought him to life for me. Another Thank you is that I always liked Andrew Garfield and thought he was a good actor, but you got out of him his true greatness. I could go on and on, but I want to say that you were one of the few directors who made a great stage to film musical. I will never get to see Hamilton, and I regret that. I would like to experience your genius in person rather than just read about it. Finally, I had to watch Tick...tick boom over and over. It was so well done. Too many of your directorial insights are missed in one or two viewings and Andrew's talent, and all the cast's outstanding performances. Thank you, Mr. Miranda. Tom
Tom, it's not in person, but there is a film of the original Broadway cast performing Hamilton on stage. It is beautifully done, and is available on Disney plus. If you watch it, the perfection might make you cry. This old lady gets tears in her eyes every time.
Agreed, the version on Disney+ (Disney Plus) is so beautifully filmed and the sound quality os amazing, and you can rewind it, for when you miss the words (they’re fast). :) Additionally, the soundtrack is amazing because he musical is essentially an opera, so it’s lovely to just listen to, also
"This is not one of those biopics where you see the Mozart writing his masterpiece. This is a movie about failure and getting back up. And his masterpiece is ahead of him. And it's hopeful because maybe so as yours." This made me cry again😭 (not that I didn't cry enough watching the movie!) This is my number one movie now. Well done, Lin❤️
Andrews long pause before saying he will be turning 30 years old is so perfect. Every person whether they want to admit it or not, feel like they have accomplished nothing before they are 30 and that pause perfectly encapsulated the existential dread that we all fear, the fear of the unknown and seeing people like lin and Jonathan shows that a never give up mentality and striving for your dreams will carry you on to what can be your calling and what gives you true meaning when it comes to your profession
Tick Tick Boom is honestly perfect. You have the film directed by a super genius in our time, the songs and story written by a super genius from the 90s, and a lead with immeasurable acting ability
People shit on Lin all the time, but the reality is he is a one of a kind. His mind is absolutely incredible. There is something to be said about being able to bring stage to screen in a way that is appealing and engaging to an audience. And for Lin to do it in the way he did on his directorial debut is incredible. If this movie doesn’t get any nominations I’m going to be very surprised
I need a breakdown of how he choreographed therapy. That was crazy. Andrew and Vanessa did a great job. And just every movement from the eyes to the hands to everything just flows perfectly
I just love how Lin makes us feel so close to him. Usually filmmakers have these prepared answers, and kind of "scripts" of what is challenging, but Lin no. His speech feels so real and authentic. More than that, the way he shows his vulnerability it's what makes me sympathise the most.
LITERALLYYYY I loved the 'Sunday' sequence and did assume that it is some kind of tribute to Jon Larson, but we all know, LMM always shows and tells something beyond expectation !
1:37 "I think it's important to go personal" This reminds me of the scene with Jonathan and his agent in which she tells him that he should write about something "he knows" for his next musical(s), which just happens to be Tick Tick Boom and Rent. It would've been cool to see Superbia onstage, but without the former two, we wouldn't have been able to know about the talent of Jonathan Larson.
The cameos in the film were amazing! I cried so hard during this film. Rent is a very important musical to me and it got me through my rough years in high school. RIP Jonathan Larson. 💚😭
It’s so amazing when movie musical directors noticeably appreciate theatre, it always reflects on the final piece and Lin for sure is one of those. He is going to be potentially one of the best movie musical directors for that reason. He is so clever and talented, I really hope to work with him someday…
I loved this film. It has literally ignited a passion for musicals that was previously disinterested at best and actively scornful at worst. Thank you Lin.
The most amazing thing about this genius is how much he learns from other people. No ego at all, always open to being inspired and improving his craft. He’s only ever going to get better. 👏👏👏
Omg I didn’t realize I could love LMM even more! So brilliant, thoughtful, talented but still humble and down to earth. So impressive to hear his outlook and appreciation for his peers and experts he still learns from… and isn’t afraid to admit that! Just a top notch human! 💜
My respect for Lin-Manuel Miranda has skyrocketed. He poured so much of himself into this movie, but he didn’t make it about himself. This is such a beautifully made tribute to Jonathan Larson. Kudos to the cast and crew of this movie!
Andrew Garfield has become my favorite actor. Talk about passion for his craft - he learned to professionally sing and play piano for this part - over a year and a half of training for this project. And he absolutely nailed it!
I was nervous when I first heard they were making TTB into a film but once I heard it was in Lin's hands? I knew it was going to be perfect. And it absolutely was. Nobody could have done it justice like he did. And the casting was the cherry on top. Jonathan Larson would be over the moon at how it turned out, in my opinion.
Omg…. So Andrew started to look frantic/overworked like Jon about six minutes into this video. How crazy were things getting by that point? 😬 Also: I think I want Lin-Manuel Miranda to try his hand at “Superbia,” too. I’ve read that there are how many different drafts of the show and nobody else has been compile the material in those drafts into something that can be produced onstage or in an animated feature. But judging by this video, I think LMM has the chops to figure out how to hammer out a script or screenplay that will work.
"What cool things don't I know you can do?" - Definitely adding that to my director's toolbox. Lin should be very, very proud of his directorial debut. Honestly don't believe any other person could have made this film. I feel like the big issue with a lot of movie musicals that miss the mark or just don't work, is that they aren't being made by the people who know the ins and outs of Musicals both stage and screen (also film studio executives and producers can obviously play a big part in tampering with the film). Cannot wait to see more from Lin-Manuel Miranda's filmmaking.
Lin Manuel-Miranda remains a constant source of inspiration for me at this point, his brain is so full of ideas that seem impossible to begin with yet he pulls it off so brilliantly.
Songs they took out of the musical: Green Green Dress, Sugar, See Her Smile. Songs added from the rock monologue: Boho Days, Swimming. Superbia songs: The one the cast sings at the workshop, the one he performs in front of Sondheim and the other writer.

Lin is a genius. He's a gift.
I love Lin from the bottom of my heart.
I can’t believe how this movie made realize how great Andrew Garfield is
I want to meet this man, shake his hand, and thank him for showing me that I am allowed to still have dreams at 34!
As said in the film, there was only one Jonathan Larson. So is Lin-Manuel Miranda, who has all but essentially become Larson's successor.
God bless this man. Such a gift for vision! And such a drive to make it come to life with excellence!!!!😍😍😍👏👏
I cherish you so much, Lin, more than anyone will ever know
There is NOTHING this man can't do. Amazing.
I wish Lin directed the wicked movie!!!
True but I’m open to seeing Jon M Chu’s vision
