- Working out an original Colt 1911 made in 1918. Yes, we're calling it a "Chapter 2" video, but the subject of the video is actually a different 1918 vintage 1911. It's one I bought in Knoxville over a year ago but just now getting around to a video with it. It just happens to be the twin brother of John's 1911, the one we used in the first video. Both were made in 1918.

This gun never gets old
The fact that some units and soldiers still carry them if allowed is a testament to its longevity. it's been largely replaced sure, but nearly every sidearm since has used the same basic formula and attributes some of it's function and design to the 1911, it's been used for over 100 years and I don't see why it won't be used for a 100 more

This was the exact model 1918 my grandfather smuggled back from WW2. It's still in the family and in near perfect condition. They just don't make them like they used to anymore.

Isn’t that cool? The first time I noticed it I thought I must be imagining it then I saw it several more times.
It happens sometimes if the sun is at a particular angle. Most with. 45 cal, because they are only flying at around 900 Feet / Second.
Yeah 45 is like the snorlax of calibers. Slow but strong lol

I have a colt 1911 45acp that belonged to my grandpaw,he gave it too me just before he passed away,he said he bought the gun in the 1930's used,it was purchased down here in the deep south were we live still fires just like it did the day he bought it,too me there's no other pistol ike them mine will be passed down to my grandson when hes old enough to own his own guns
I have a 1911 Government Model commercial from 1914. Serial number in the 4 digit range. I love that it still shoots as good as it did 108 years ago.
I have one that my wife’s grandfather was issued in WW1. He was a Quartermaster so he was issued the .45 and was issued a mule to ride across Europe rather than walking.
Treasure that for generations to come!.
And buy a tin of sealed .45 ammo. In the year 2525, if man is still alive, one of your descendants will want to try it.

I'm currently saving for a Colt 1911 like yours and John's. I just started my collection, starting off with a Glock 23 Gen 3, Smith and Wesson m&p 9 2.0, and a Sig Sauer P320 compact. Only thing I regret is not starting sooner in my life. Great video as always, been a subscriber for a while now, always look forward to your content.
As someone who has been there and my first was also a Glock 23 gen 3. I would recommend getting a 19 9mm instead. Cheaper ammo, easier to shoot, higher capacity mags especially with the extended 19rd mag.
@@fujimi715 You can buy a conversion barrel for $120 and shoot 9mm for range/practice. If you wanted to carry it for self defense you would want to change the extractor.

Colt and S&W are my favs. But if you're set on a 1911, check out the civilian marksmanship program. You might get lucky and end up with a nice original!

My Colt 1911 was originally issued in WWI to a Lieutenant and carried through WWII by the same man who retired as a Colonel.
It’s all original except for the raw ivory grips he had put on In Cairo to honor GS Patton his commander.

I have my Dad's Ithaca 1911 A1 made in 1944 and it is without a doubt the most refined shooting pistol I have ever shot. Sometimes I think I should lock it away due to sentimental value, but I just can't bring myself to do it. It is truly amazing that both of those pistols are over 100 years old and still function flawlessly - the greatest pistol design of all times.
My favorite handgun in my collection is my Colt 1911 gvt. Not an original from back in the day but it is the 70 series model. Such great guns!!
I LOVE 1911s, and I'm fortunate to have inherited my Great-Uncle's 1911 (also made in 1918), he was a medic with Patton's army all the way from Africa to Berlin, and since I don't have BigFoot hands, I've never had a hammer bite issue.
I have a WW1 1911 that Was carried by my father in laws grandfather in WW1. It shoots very accurate. Love that gun. It was made in 1917 according to the #’s on it. The gunsmith told me those early models were all hand fitted. In early WW1 they didn’t have to be technology to mass produce like later models. This thing is stupid accurate, double taps are so close they touch! I don’t shoot it much, mostly clean it once a year just to Handel it. What a dream gun. I’ll never sell it, it will be passed on to my oldest grandson, who’s quite the shooter. He’s 24 now, who knows how long I will live before passing it on. 😉
I have a 1911 (not A1) It's been in the family for 50+ years. I shoot it monthly at IDPA Matches at Volunteer Pistol Club. It runs and I score better than with any other pistol I shoot. I will pass it down to my sons when I'm gone. Great firearm. Thank you Hickock 45.
There’s a lot of good guns out there . Some concealable, some with quick triggers, some have really high capacity mags … at the end of the day a 1911 is the one true man’s gun. Go ahead and collect the others , but every real man has a 1911

Every time I think about getting a .45 a modern gun I watch his videos on the 1911 and end up keep on saving my money for one. In my mind it is the coolest and best looking gun ever.

@@savage22bolt32 Unfortunately I think the second auction is already closed and the 1911's are sold that were planned to be sold.
CMP noticed some people abusing their program by buying through CMP then reselling for ticket scalper prices. Caused a few month pause in the CMP lottery for these 1911's.

@@savage22bolt32 I agree. It seemed like the CMP sales would have been the beginning of something wonderful, but after the second stage of the lottery ended, I'm not sure what the future holds.

Was fortunate to obtain two early 1911s awhile back. One was made in 1918 and the other (with a "CXXX" serial number) has a letter stating it was sold in 1912! Both are fantastic shooters.

They say that the accuracy of the originals is really poor, but you don't seem to have any issues putting it on target. Very interesting vid on a great gun. Your channel never disappoints. Thanks.
I have my Great Uncle's. 1918 manufacture and all original. I have been shooting it since I was 11 and owned it since I was 16. These are accurate, depending on the individual pistol, from acceptable to fine. The difference between my original 1911 and a Series 70 Gold Cup Match is: 25 yards the 1911 is about 5". At the same range the Gold Cup is about 3"- 31/2. This compares these two individual pistols. A lot of the difference is the sights. One is GI the other is a Gucci Colt Match pistol with great sights.
That 1911 is only 2 yrs older than H45! My bedside home Def gun is a 1911, cocked and ready……..

I have a late model Kimber 1911 and my brother has a Nighthawk 1911. We love them and the 1911 is a fantastic firearm to own and shoot.

It is really a masterpiece of mechanical work, isn't it? 1911 ...unbelievable it is really fantastic. Even if you are not a gun lover ...this is real craftsmanship ...not like programming the next little app. ( I am a programmer ...so I know what I am talking about. This is real art- love it
My 1911 was made in 1913. Shoots great. I have no real provenance on it but I know who carried it from the thirties until retired . He was West Point class of 1926. I was given it by his son who couldn’t expat with it.
John Browning was a absolute genius! The 1911 is the most recognized, copied, reliable and loved pistol in the history of mankind. They have fought in almost every war the US has ever been in and numerous other countries have used them also. Its a masterpiece from a brilliant man.
I shot a 1911 at a range while I was still an Army officer in 1999. It sounded like a tool box when you shook it, but I hit bullseyes with that old girl. Wish I had one of my own now. Maybe I will someday...

I feel extremely fortunate to have picked up a WWI era 1911 traced to the Marine Corps and have the Colt archive letter etc. I planned on just looking at it. BUT.........I couldnt help it I went out and put about 20 rounds through it without any issues at all. Easily my favorite gun besides my repro Colt Walker. But man those original 1911's are absolutlly incredible. John Browning was a genius
I love 1911s. I learned to shoot one when I was 11 in 1966; it had an Ace .22 cal. conversion: perfect for a kid. Forty-fives stick to me, so I have a nice Officer's ACP, two full sized Colts that I bought new a decade or so ago, and (drum roll, please) my buddy's 1911 that he carried as a Naval officer during Korea. His dad had his initials engraved on the side; it is lovely. Thanks, Turk! They all work just fine. --Old Guy
I have a 1911-a1 1970 model gold cup match which I like a whole lot! It fires straight and true (has a red dot magnifier) and was inherited by me after my stepfather passed away. I don't get to shoot it that often, but when I do I use the +3 extra mags and a reloader to save from removing all the bone covering skin from my thumb! Wonderful gun.

I have one of those also! My wife’s grandpa found it in a pawn shop in the 70s and gave it to my father in law. He gave it to me and I’ll give it to my son. Mine has notches in the grip, makes you wonder why.
Wouldn't be surprised if the number of notches was the number of kills in combat!

Never noticed that they didn’t even come with a serrated MSH on these early models.
I wasn’t a fan at first but over the years I’ve grown to like the look of those vertical serrations. One other thing is the color of the bluing back then was more gray; you don’t see that anymore. I’ll probably send my Govt model off to Turnbull someday to get it refinished in that color.
That's how I remember the one I carried. Didn't know much except how to shoot and clean it, but in my mind it's a kind of grey. Last had one in 89 (didn't have Beretta pistols at my unit).
Maybe they were Parkerized instead of blued?
I have a USGI 1911, also made in 1918. I've got all the paperwork that came with it when my father bought it from the DCM in 1961. It was Augusta Arsenal reworked and parkerized no later than 1955. (The Arsenal closed in 1955....) It's a good shooter. I don't put a lot of rounds through it these days but every so often, it gets shot. No reason not to. But my younger 1911s get more range time.
That is one beautiful firearm. I hope to own one someday. Congrats!

I am a glock guy, but I LOVE the 1911 platform. They are beautiful both in appearance and mechanics. Just a smidge heavy for the ccw
