    Access to medicines is a universal right. This documentary, with the testimonies of experts in health and legal issues, explains why India has become a world leader in the manufacture of generic drugs and follows the legal and social process of, The Gliveec Case, where Novartis took the Indian government to Court in a dispute over the granting of a patent for this drug which treats cancer. The judgment found in favour of the Indian Government earlier this year (2013).
    This film documents the seven year legal battle, including first hand interviews with people involved in this case, which gives the documentary a unique relevance.
    Finance: ACCDand City Council of Barcelona.

    It's not just developing countries that benefit from low cost medicines, but also the West. The UK's NHS relies upon low priced import of generics especially from India, otherwise it's annual medicine bill of £13 billion could easily triple.

    • @xSCHEF
      @xSCHEF 8 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      +munsifghalib Its not also not only the developing countries that are hurt by the trade agreement, the people in the West are hit just as hard. It's a couple dozen companies, usually owned by the same couple of famillies that profit billions and billions of dollars. Now it's easy to hate on the US, because they are not alone in this, but the US government IS the powerhouse behind the trade agreement.

    A good government is supposed to be like India, try to protect the public's interests. even for laws is served for the public, not just for some monopolies.
    I do hope that china would also have more such researchers and famous people fight for the public, not just receiving the money from Western big companies and serve them.

      Griten Goyary Not at all and I am very welcome for your comment! I would like to recommend you to go to visit China in the future. I come from a small town in south China, and when I first go to visit Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou, I can't express how develop the cities are. I used to go to Hong Kong, Tokyo, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, but none of the city is like Chinese city, full of energy and people are looking forward. You can feel it when you are wandering around.
      Of course, I would say there are still a lot of people in poor, but which country could be perfect? Surely the Chinese government is trying to resolve this problem. However, sometimes not all the officers are as wise as the central government and these lower level officer would sometimes spoiled the system.
      One last thing, I feel that China is actually a highly capitalised country coated with the communist. As a famous saying from Deng Xiao Ping, whatever the color of the cat, the best is the one who can catch the mouse:)

    Typical western mentality start the video showing old Delhi, look how crowded and filthy their capital is imagine rest of the country keep repeating the same throughout the video. Even the color tone of the whole documentary is gloomy and depressing even for city like Mumbai where it is sunny almost throughout the year, by accident ? Do not think so.

      @Somack Hi Somack!
      Yeah you guessed correctly! I'm a afghan girl.
      Good question. Unfortunately women and girls in Afghanistan don't have freedom :(. As a girl in Afghanistan you have to listen to your husbent/father. You don't have freedom to chose for your own life and if you don't do so people will talk bad behind you. But now it is better than before.
      Womens freedom is diffrent and it depends to from which ethnic groups someone are. For example the pashtons don't allows their women to educate ..etc, but women from other ethnic groups such as tajiks or hazara have more freedom ( it also depends on their family )

    • @petraakbari846
      @petraakbari846 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      To sum up women in Afghanistan don't have freedom becouse of some wrong beliefs that people have. Society in Afghanistan is male dominated.
      I hope some day will be peace in Afghanistan😕!
      (Sorry for my grammar mistakes and I hope you got answer to your question)
      Best regards 🌹🌹

    Based Indian pharma. Generics are great. The US medical industry and the multinational pharma industry are definitely not for the people. It's pretty disgusting that they even allow marketing of medications via TV ads etc in the US. The way it's meant to work is that you have an illness, and the doctor diagnoses you and prescribes a treatment with informed consent, NOT "see a TV ad, diagnose yourself then convince the doctor of your symptoms and ask the doctor to try that medication". If it's indicated for treatment of that illness, the doctor probably won't argue too much, as long as it's not inappropriate for the patient. That's what the pharma companies are counting on. India, as with any place, has its issues, but I'm impressed with their attitude towards multinational pharma parasites.

    It is a very nice documentary, shedding lots of insights in the pharmacy industry. But rather I want to make a comment on the places of the video, India is a poor country, we agree, but this video shows only the poorest places, and poor people. I didn't see a single minute of nice and wealthy place or people. Pl just don't show India as the poorest country, show the other side of India which is rich, intelligent, and smart

      The US in movies and news is only Manhattan and LA. The wealthiest parts.
      In case of India, they only show the overcrowded medieval era marketplaces in Delhi, or the Dharavi slum in Mumbai.

      They already showed the "rich" part ....... The intellectual people in the documentary , the whole thought that went into the laws for drugs , it's stubbornness to deny going down under pressure by multinationals , to safeguard its citizens life and right . That's so we need .

    Really good provision by 3D. When it comes to life saving drugs, then definitely the balance is very much required. I hope other countries wpild eventually agree on this on make this universal.

    One striking contrast I observed in this documentary. While all the experts talking look suave and well to do, general public is always depicted in dilapidated condition. It don''t understand their aesthetics. India is not this much black and white.

    I don't understand how tweaking the formula helps the companies extend the patent period beyond 20 years. They would get patent on the new formula, but the old formula (which is equally effective) will become free of patent and other manufacturers can manufacture it. So how does it amount to extension of patent period?

    • @NikhilNadiger

    if the big pharma companies use a digital platform like an ERP to capture their costs on R&D and such ERP's are in turn, audited by government approved auditors then both the government and the companies can have a more data based understanding of true costs of R&D.
    But there is bigger question of how much and what regulations should be in place for the pharmaceutical industry since it is a vital industry that has a direct impact on the lives of people. Maybe the government should start their own labs and fund R&D for all diseases and then once a drug has been invented, only manufacturing and distribution should be given to corporations.

    • @abhinavs4326

      just compensate the loses of indian pharma company and in return own a part of that patent and buy from the companies to sell it in govt hospitals . that is better than govt having labs .
