Your logic and reasoning with how and why you chose to build the stem makes perfect sense to me. Excellent Job Bob....congrats on quite the milestone of planking and fairing the planks.

„I have too many clamps“ - no woodworker/boatbuilder ever said.
Victoria will get a nice tender. Thank you for the explanation, initially I also thought Victoria will have visible planks. Painting makes sense, it is not a show boat but a working tender.
Can‘t wait for the next episode.

Victoria is this tender. It's name comes from the sailboat, "Victoria", that was getting scrapped. This will be the tender for the sailboat "Arabella".

Bob, I have seen a lot of hulls planked over the years. I am planning on building a cedar strip canoe in the next year. Looking at Victoria's hull after your installation of the Whisky Plank, (arial view) the wood layout is artistic and beautiful ! What a unique pattern you have created with this small tender. I am sure that Steve is following along too.
He is under so much stress not only with the time line marching down on launch day, but also with his mom. I just hope that she is around to see Arabella in the water. May God bless them both in these trying times. You, on the other hand, are a cool cucumber! Never rattled and showing us the "Art of Boatbuilding". Methodical and steady. Habits and methods that we all should heed and learn from. I get too "antsy" at times. Haste makes waste. I am a loyal watcher and fan. I can learn a LOT from watching you. Excellent craftsmanship and you are a good instructor ! !

  • @Nomadboatbuilding

Looking good Bob. I commend both you and Steve for staying away from a bright finished hull. I think a lot of people would enjoy the strip planking method more if they did't have the anxiety of a bright finished result hanging over their head. Maintenance is easier too. I've had countless bright finished strip built canoes presented to me for repairs that were suffering from terminal epoxy and glass UV degradation due to varnish breaking down and not being refreshed in a timely manner. Getting caught out by the stem and cutwater width issue is an easy pitfall to find oneself in. It's not exactly intuitive. I personally always detail those elements out in my lofting process to avoid that mishap but only because I have found myself in the same shoes as yourself. I also sometimes fabricate the stem and cutwater separately due to the different material width requirements. Enjoy your impending date with the misery board Bob.

Bob, I’m always enjoy the challenge of thinking about why you build the way you do, the steps you take to resolve problems or to tweak a design. I especially like tying to solve or pre answer my questions before you answer them for me or your wider audience. Sir, you have a gift of passing knowledge on, I would have loved to watch you do sculptures in years gone by, it would have been a fantastic journey to watch an artist explain what and why they did something. For us non artist mortals, you are an inspiration.

I'm crossing my figures hoping Steve and his crew will meet their deadline for A2A. Even with the help of many friends It's going to be very close call. Obviously Steve now realizes there's a very big big difference between building a house and building a boat!

What a beautiful piece of workmanship Bob, well done, the high view at 17.00 really shows what an interesting way all the strips fit together. I am not a boat builder or sailor but fully appreciate the skill and experience which you portray and loved the little trick of the way you stopped the pointed ends of the planks popping up. Such a relaxing half hour just to watch you at work and explaining everything you were doing.
    Many thanks from the UK.

Of all the things I've lost, I miss my wooden dinghy the most. Best get to building one, perhaps a strip-built one. Thanks for the guidance. It's not easy to film all this, so you're appreciated. I have an 8hp Yamaha outboard, love rowing and still have a boom, mast and the daggerboard from my long lost dinghy [made by a NZ navyman in Auckland in the 60's]. I live in Canada now. Would Cedar be better than Maple? I would like to keep it under 12ft and 80lb's, if possible. I do like the idea of bull-nose strip. Why did you decide against these, if I may ask? Any ideas on a suitable set of plans for such a build? I have a full workshop and I'm used to timber boatbuilding. Thanks again.

Thank you for the education. I was given a model sailboat hull about 60 inches long made of mahogany; it also came with a 26-pound molded lead keel. I have been reluctant to do anything and may proceed after a careful inspection. I also hope to learn more about the "A" class boats I am told sailed in the 1940s on Sunday afternoon in Central Park in NYC. I was told the boats were adjusted for each tack from rowboats.
I have a fiberglass 2-meter hull that is nearly identical that I expect to complete first with radio-controlled sheets and steering to acquire the materials to do so and then apply what I learn to the "A" boat. BTW, any information at all would be appreciated. TIA
I will watch this series again before I begin. Thank you very much.
