CotA is a fantastic early entry in Capcom's mid-90s stable of fighters, and the Sega Saturn really puts the shoddy PS1 port to shame in every way possible. Well worth a play!
Ah, look at those credits - look at those familiar Canadian names. Capcom went all out here. How amazing was it hearing the actual cartoon voices back in the day?
Both systems had stock 2MB of RAM, and this game used no RAM cartridges to help it. The PS1 version used the Saturn release as a base, even down to its lower resolution. The big problem with the PS1 was that in addition to all the animation cuts and sound quality reduction on the Saturn version, it also lost additional background animation, it lost background raster effects, and worst of all, it’s performance often hovered at 30fps consistently with dips into the 10s at the worst of times. That said, Marvel Superheroes was a travesty on both platforms. Even with the 1MB RAM cartridges the Saturn version still had slowdown issues, and some of the additional animation, especially on Blackheart was pieced together and still not near arcade perfect.
Vivid Venom Yeah, that's typically the case. The PS1 versions aren't typically bad, they're just not as good usually. Of the Capcom games that were released on both though, this is one of the rougher ones on the PS1 since the gameplay suffers from the lack of frames. Some, like SFA3, were great on the PS1, even if they weren't arcade perfect like the Saturn one was.
Vivid Venom Yeah. You know, it was also very capable of 3D when the programmers actually bothered. There's some stuff on it that rivals the quality of the PS1's good 3D. Last Bronx, Dead or Alive, Winter Heat, and Panzer Dragoon Saga all stand up to the good PS1 stuff imo. But it doesn't really matter what it could do, since it didn't get well used for 3D very often :/ unfulfilled potential is pretty useless at the end of the day
Vivid Venom Yeah, in a way, said like that, it sounds like the PS3 before the PS3! Haha well except that the PS3 recovered after awhile and made an awesome comeback, and Sega left that part out. But same basic issue, they're both examples of powerful hardware being used badly and the machine suffering at the hands of lazy and/or pennypinching developers. You're totally right about Saga. Sega really knew how to load a game with personality, no matter what the subject matter was :) I mean, Scud and Mr. Bones - not great games, but damn were they good looking and stylish! And the N64... smh. It did what it did well, but it could've been so much more. I do think that it was probably as powerful as it was as a point of compromise for the storage media. When you weren't paying for the cost of an optical drive (those assemblies, even mass-produced in 94-95, were very expensive compared to just about any other component in the Saturn and PS1), you could go higher spec and still sell it cheaper and make a profit. Cart connectors cost peanuts, but the publishers, and we as a result, bore that expense in cartridge production for rom chips. I wasn't big on the N64 for a long time, since Sony had already introduced me to brand new, AAA games at $49.99 instead of the SNES/N64 prices of $60-80. Well, that and because I wanted FF7 more than Mario. Lol remember those days? :)
@@NintendoComplete What are your thoughts on the Arcade 1up release of this? Should I buy a used Saturn console and CotA disc ? Or should I buy the Arcade 1up?
I played this game on my Saturn back in 1996. I don't remember the animation being so good. I thought the fps were even more reduced compared to the arcade
@@SpeedDudeGTX Characters lost about 30% of their animation, some animations and effects are pixelated, and there's some slowdown despite the things they did. That said, it's still better than the PS1 version.
@Darknight0681 Yes, the Saturn version was not Arcade perfect either. Not to mention, the PS1 version suffers from really bad framerate drops (also due to how underpowered PS1 was for 2D games), missing background animations (which the Saturn version was still able to retain), missing 1/4th of animation frames (Saturn lost about 1/3rd), compressed audio, endings were shortened. Plus, Probe Entertainment decided to use an FMV intro instead of a sprite based intro because they would've had to cut out the gameplay footage. If only RAM cart support was available on the Saturn version.

you are really good ...never seen such a convincing magneto win...Can you do a video and beat this game on the hardest difficulty with the Sega Saturn?
Angel Rivera Santana AFAIK the PC version is perfect when you run it in its highest detail mode. Well, except for the awful looking way the game scales the arcade resolution with the UNIVBE driver :( that's a big turn off of an otherwise flawless port

Wanna know something? I once made a list of games to buy as long as my arms combined, and this was one of the Saturn titles I'd get one day.
It took alot to defeat Super Nintendo.
@@user-lz9gn7sf3m And no one did defeat the SNES as it easily won it's generation of consoles.
The PSX port is well-made for the hardware and is underrated.
I have that version of it after my brother showed it to me
If they ever make a Sega Saturn Mini this has to be on there!!
Like all of Capcom's Saturn games
25 years ago....i cant believe it.

0:14 best capcom intro
Saturn is absolute BOSS 🪐
Yep, and PlayStation couldn't do 2D as well as Saturn could. PS1 port of this game is pretty bad.
Because Saturn have more ram and could upgrade unlike PlayStation @@SpeedDudeGTX

I purchased a Saturn because of their fighting game ports.
I invested in a ram card to run import games
Good decision 👏🏾 same here. Great 2d games.
Holy shit I had no idea there was a home console version of this game let alone one on the Saturn. You are a god send Complete GOD SEND

What a beautiful game. Perhaps one day we’ll see a Capcom/Marvel collection on current generation systems.
Well, you're in luck. Because it happened. With the Marvel Versus Capcom Fighting Collection.

Yep. No Continues for the credit sequence unless you're playing the PS1 version.
MARVEL COMICS' X-MEN CHILDREN OF THE ATOM 30TH ANNIVERSARY 1994-2024!

Neat they are making an Arcade1up of this title. I may buy it, instead of tracking down a Saturn and CotA disc.
James Kelvin
It also includes Marvel Super Heroes!
