What's to stop the CAA slapping a NFZ over ever urban area in the future ? If I've understood correctly , DJI have handed control of the geo zones to them ?
Hi Ian Recently went to Croatia they have an app, AMC PORTAL, on which you get a live immediate permission to fly where you are, just may give you height restrictions etc. ( sort of an immediate notam) Bryan Barnstaple
A lot of european countries have similar. I got immediate permission from Malta's main airport for flying around 4 5Kms away but in a warning zone. Send the request via the RC remote (with wifi hotspot) and get a text back in a few seconds.... How it should be....
From the DJI news release: The update will initially be introduced in countries that have implemented geographical maps that are compliant with existing technical standards[2]: Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, France, Lithuania, Switzerland and the UK. Other countries under EASA jurisdiction will follow in due course.
Hi Ian, thanks so much. Very interesting. Could you clarify whether this applies to a central geo fencing database managed by DJI, and thus perhaps also syncing with the Go 4 app? I’m a Mavic 2 Pro pilot, hence my question. Thanks again!
If a mini 2 is around 3 miles from an airport, just within the inside edge of an orange circle, what happens if unlock is requested and is flight legal?
Thanks, Ian. I wonder if we will see changes here in the U.S. Conflicts between what DJI allows and what the FAA allows are many. Cheers from Wisconsin.
It seems every country is watching and following eachother..... You get Remote ID, then the EU dies, and soon the UK will..... So I imagine this will head your way soon.. Cheers and ATB. 👍🏻👍🏻
Hopefully it won't be too long before the CAA and others up date us with the correct infomation as the average fly won't bother or remember to check for restrictions. Thanks for the information as ever you are on the ball with the facts 👍👍
Hi Ian. Great update! You really get the sense things are rapidly changing in the drone world. Yours is an excellent reminder that ultimately it's the drone operator's responsibility to ensure they are not flying in restricted airspace. It remains to be seen how this information can be easily and (freely) made available in the future. Fingers crossed the CAA will make some sort of resource/App available in a clear and user friendly way. 🤣🤣🤣 Hopefully these changes will not result in an increase in drone incidents until some proper CAA approved info is made available. Use of any CAA resource (check map restrictions) would be great, as the CAA could mandate a check is made prior to any flight operation. We will see, Anyway, Cheers and Happy New Year! Suffolk Air Adventures.
This is both good and bad 🙈 Good that all the previously-inaccurate restrictions are now gone 🥳 Bad that anyone can now fly a DJI drone over previously restricted areas 😱 Will this see lots more reports of flights over prisons and incursions on airport FRZs we wonder? 🤔
I'm worried that someone can now buy a drone and fly it anywhere they like without even needing to check the CAA rules. They can now claim ignorance with "the app allowed me to fly there so it must be fine"
This is absolute nuts. Just checked my local airport (Gatwick) and this is only in an “Enhanced Warning Zone” which only requires a DJI verified account to over-ride, utter madness, Gatwick (and every other FRZ in the country) should be in the Restricted Zones at the very least. I guess they’ll be a lot more morons flying into Gatwick airspace soon then, if it’s so east to over-ride the restrictions - it’s almost as if DJI want their users to stir up shit and bring in tighter regulations.
Keep in mind it's unlikely there was ever a moron flying at Gatwick; it's universally agreed that the incident never had a real normal consumer drone. That said, you're spot on. Airports should be clearly marked FRZs and no flying...
Hi Ian. A great update and an excellent reminder to people that it is their responsibility to ensure they are not flying in restricted airspace. The CAA really need to get on with producing a freel & simple App which shows airspace restrictions. They could mandate checking it prior to any drone flight operations. I know they can say it's peoples own responsibility to find out where they can fly safely but the CAA is there to encourage and assist safe flight operators so the need for them to get that information out is imperative. Anyway, Happy New Year and Cheers. 👍👍👍Suffolk Air Adventures.
@@IaninLondon Indeed! Lol. Sorry you got two similar commitments. I wasn't sure the first one had been sent. 😁 It helps the algorithm I guess. 👍 Cheers.
A free and simple app 🤔 do you mean like drone assist. 🤦♂️ it’s already out there and tells you all the permanent and temporary flight restrictions. Have you had your head buried in the sand. Even coverdrone have their own rip off version of it.
@@SkysharkMediaAerialImagery No head not in the sand... I'm aware of (and have) Drone Assist and it is a great App. I think you have missed the point I was making. Drone Assist while referenced by the CAA on their website is not an 'official' or CAA approved App. Nor is it endorsed by them, and for good reason as they caveat on their site. ..'As a regulator, the CAA supports any measure to improve the safe use of drones but does not endorse individual products' The point being is that if there is some incorrect information about flight restrictions on Drone Assist (or any other App) the CAA won't care as the will say it is your responsibility as the drone operator to ensure safe flight operations. If an approved CAA app was available there would be the (not unreasonable) expectation that it was accurate. You as the drone operator can then have 100% confidence that you are flying in unrestricted airspace. If recorded, the checking of a CAA App could be used as evidence if challenged by the police or CAA. This would show you have done everything in your power to be flying in an area not covered by a restriction. For example, If I check NATs to see if there is a NOTAM in effect in advance of a planned flight, I know this is approved government information and therefore will correct. Not supplied by a private/commercial 3rd party App developer who will not accept (nor should they) any liability for incorrect supplied information. As the CAA say its up to the Operator to ensure a safe flight is conducted. I know it will upset a lot of people but I'm in favour of increased controls if it means both commercial and hobby flyers can continue to fly drones in a safe and responsible manner. Increased controls will hopefully weed out the idiots, criminals and auditors who just want to antagonise the authorities. I feel more controls/restrictions are inevitable anyway, so we may as well understand and accept it. I'm sorry if you feel I was promoting ignorance as an excuse for people to fly where ever they like, that certainly wasn't my intention. Cheers. Suffolk Air Adventures.
I didn't even know anything about this, until this video Ian, i was flying today in a spot that i regularly fly, but today it came up with a warning on my controller that i was near a restricted zone! there has never been one there! sounds like the app is messed up?
Or it may be that as I said, the DJI Geo zones will often misaligned with the actual required zones. I'm hoping that it's now an accurate reflection of a genuine no-fly zone
For the Netherlands is completely inaccurate map on the DJI-controller it doesnt show no-fly zones whilst the official governmental app does show them.
There are no longer any restricted zones on Anglesey; I've just looked. Only Enhanced warning zones that do not need unlocking. (However these are mostly airfields, so you would need to be careful)
Wow that’s excellent news. I was frustrated with DJI’s own personal restrictions in places that were totally legal to fly according the CAA regs. My only concern is idiots or clueless newbies flying over crowded football stadiums. I best get this update in quickly then before someone changes their mind on this 😊
I don't understand the point of removing these geo zones until each individual country was ready to be able to offer its own up to date no fly zones, creating a smoth transition from DJI straight to the CAA for example. its almost like they are deliberately leaving the door open for misuse to then crack down further citing irresponsible operators or even just inexperienced users. but having seen how the UK handles drones we will still be waiting for map data in 2026
Possibly because users were being told not to rely on the DJI zone data at all due to its inaccuracies... So they probably thought what's the point ...
I am currently on dji fly app version 1.12.6 which is the latest according to my app store, but I have not got any difference in flght maps, they are all still the same old geofencing restrictions, any ideas?@@IaninLondon
New flyers have the responsibility of educating themselves FIRST! That is why here the FAA requires everyone to take the TRUST exam which is free. No excuses for those who want to pretend to be ignorant.
Methinks it's DJI knowing the future CAA regs on the way and thus implementing a cash grab before.... Yes I'm always sounding negative. I just look at the future of all things hobby drone wise.
So I just took my mini2 out of the case for the first time in 6 months and went to unlock my local zone to find they were all missing and now I am here. Can't help but think this is a step backwards, I live within spitting distance of RAF Kenley. There is now nothing to stop me flying in an FRZ, I'm not going to because I'm not a dick, but there will be plenty who do either deliberately or because they're ignorant to the zoning restrictions. The possibility of a repeat of the "Gatwick" incident has now multiplied exponentially. When it happens the CAA won't hold back, just another inevitable nail in the coffin of this hobby in the UK.
This is good news. There's been just two occasions in two years when I've been prevented from flying by a fictional DJI NFZ, but I overcame the problems by moving the TOLP by a few metres and imaging from a different viewpoint. However, I know a few places where overflight will - at certain times of the day - endanger crowds or people who will be unable to avoid a falling drone, such as workers in glasshouses. So... Q. Who should people with responsibility under the Occupiers' Liability Act now contact to ensure appropriate geofencing?
@@IaninLondon But Stonehenge is big enough and old enough to stand on its own - and you'd be pushed to damage it unless your FPV drone was packing an AT grenade. 😉
what idiots DJI are. I ended up selling my 2 DJI drones as their no fly zones extended so far around the Bournemouth area which was also suddenly extended by the CAA for no apparent reason a few years ago.
DJI have realized that they should concentrate on making drones and not policing them by restrictions they get nothing in return for trying to accommodate restriction zones example the EU changes the rules to suit there pockets and uk C labels didn't come into affect
Long overdue update to fix the old mess of mis-matched Geo-zones. Will the CAA rise up and get this implemented properly now?

A lot of european countries have similar. I got immediate permission from Malta's main airport for flying around 4 5Kms away but in a warning zone. Send the request via the RC remote (with wifi hotspot) and get a text back in a few seconds.... How it should be....
Does this apply to Ireland please? I see restricted areas still where you just have to confirm with dji that it’s safe to fly? Thank you
From the DJI news release: The update will initially be introduced in countries that have implemented geographical maps that are compliant with existing technical standards[2]: Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, France, Lithuania, Switzerland and the UK. Other countries under EASA jurisdiction will follow in due course.
@@IaninLondon interesting, I wonder how long! Thank you
I applied today and got refused. When I looked on the map it was a yellow zone now. So why did they refuse me???
Hi Ian, thanks so much. Very interesting. Could you clarify whether this applies to a central geo fencing database managed by DJI, and thus perhaps also syncing with the Go 4 app? I’m a Mavic 2 Pro pilot, hence my question. Thanks again!
There was no warning where I live but I checked there now and there is a massive orange circle around where I live.
If you're
If a mini 2 is around 3 miles from an airport, just within the inside edge of an orange circle, what happens if unlock is requested and is flight legal?
Thanks, Ian. I wonder if we will see changes here in the U.S. Conflicts between what DJI allows and what the FAA allows are many. Cheers from Wisconsin.
It seems every country is watching and following eachother..... You get Remote ID, then the EU dies, and soon the UK will..... So I imagine this will head your way soon..
Cheers and ATB. 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Ian, great update
Let’s hope pilots remain sensible and do not abuse these increased freedoms
Hopefully it won't be too long before the CAA and others up date us with the correct infomation as the average fly won't bother or remember to check for restrictions. Thanks for the information as ever you are on the ball with the facts 👍👍
Thanks Karen . Yep, some interesting stuff ahead.... 👍🏻
Does this apply to Ireland please? I see restricted areas still where you just have to confirm with dji that it’s safe to fly? Thanks
About effing time!!!!!
Loving the new-look studio by the way! 🤩
Thanks! Should have shown Ted asleep at my feet 🐾🐾🤠
Hopefully these changes will not result in an increase in drone incidents until some proper CAA approved info is made available.
Yes, I'm hoping that the automatic update starts and we get meaningful, accurate restrictions instead of the mess we've been putting up with until now
@@IaninLondon 100% agree! The DJI zones have been terrible for years now, no meaningfully representation on actual FRZs at all.
Frauditors will be on this in a flash. Especially you know who...
Prisons are still shown on the DJI Fly App map, so no excuse for flying near one.
Let’s hope people still respect the laws
Thanks Ian. The DJI release you showed was dated 2023 not 2024. Is that a mistake from DJI?
No, the app was updated Dec 23, but the fly safe data was changed this weekend 👍🏻
@@IaninLondon I was referring to the DJI press release you showed not the app. The date on the release was January last year.
@@JohnnyBouchier Yes, it's a typo by DJI, should have been 04/01/2024.
Ah yes, as said by Lambo; a typo; it should be 2024.
Thanks fella. Yep, this can go either way... Hoping they get it right 👍🏻👍🏻
@@IaninLondon Indeed!
How do i unlock a FRZ Then??
I didn't even know anything about this, until this video Ian, i was flying today in a spot that i regularly fly, but today it came up with a warning on my controller that i was near a restricted zone! there has never been one there! sounds like the app is messed up?
Or it may be that as I said, the DJI Geo zones will often misaligned with the actual required zones. I'm hoping that it's now an accurate reflection of a genuine no-fly zone
For the Netherlands is completely inaccurate map on the DJI-controller it doesnt show no-fly zones whilst the official governmental app does show them.
I am having problems unlocking my Geo Zone on Anglesey. Anybody else having an issue ??
There are no longer any restricted zones on Anglesey; I've just looked. Only Enhanced warning zones that do not need unlocking. (However these are mostly airfields, so you would need to be careful)
That is good
Wow that’s excellent news. I was frustrated with DJI’s own personal restrictions in places that were totally legal to fly according the CAA regs. My only concern is idiots or clueless newbies flying over crowded football stadiums. I best get this update in quickly then before someone changes their mind on this 😊
Wonder if dji get rid of the the ce rules then
Not true, I have updated Geo and for frist look, they are same like before in CZ. So not in EU.
I can see this causing problems with new fliers not knowing the rules
New flyers have the responsibility of educating themselves FIRST! That is why here the FAA requires everyone to take the TRUST exam which is free. No excuses for those who want to pretend to be ignorant.
Anyone having issues with a msg saying failed to load fly safe database dynamic data, have nothing at all on mine no NFZ restrictions either
You still see the airport restricted zones and it's widely accepted the Gatwick incident was not a rogue hobbyist flying his Mavic 2 or whatever....
Great news, so simple now and can fly more places.
R.I.D......🤗
This is good news. There's been just two occasions in two years when I've been prevented from flying by a fictional DJI NFZ, but I overcame the problems by moving the TOLP by a few metres and imaging from a different viewpoint.
However, I know a few places where overflight will - at certain times of the day - endanger crowds or people who will be unable to avoid a falling drone, such as workers in glasshouses. So...
Q. Who should people with responsibility under the Occupiers' Liability Act now contact to ensure appropriate geofencing?
It's always the CAA I believe. But if Windsor Castle can get it, but Stonehenge can't, I'm unsure lesser mortals will.... :)
About time
DJI have realized that they should concentrate on making drones and not policing them by restrictions they get nothing in return for trying to accommodate restriction zones example the EU changes the rules to suit there pockets and uk C labels didn't come into affect
Still the same for me
Just sell your DJI stuff...😆
Hang on in the uk u can fly 267 ft above a prison your saying 400m away from a prison
Nope. New law already passed and comes into effect 25 Jan... New video on this later today 👍🏻
be flying 747 nexst week lol confusing lol
Setup for a bust,and confiscation.
